Atonement (Dir. Joe Wright) :Keira Knightley and James McAvoy star in the adaptation of Atonement, based on the novel by Ian McEwan. On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her older sister Cecilia (Kiera Knightley) strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching Cecilia is their housekeeper's son Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), a childhood friend who, along with Briony's sister, has recently graduated from Cambridge. By the end of that day the lives of all three will have been changed forever. Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had never before dared to approach and will have become victims of the younger girl's scheming imagination, and Briony will have committed a dreadful crime, the guilt for which will colour her entire life. Pride and Prejudice (Dir. Joe Wright) : The five Bennet sisters - Elizabeth, or Lizzie (Keira Knightley), Jane (Rosamund Pike), Lydia (Jena Malone), Mary (Talulah Riley) and Kitty (Carey Mulligan) - have been raised well aware of their mother's (Brenda Blethyn) fixation on finding them husbands and securing set futures. The spirited and intelligent Elizabeth, however, strives to live her life with a broader perspective, as encouraged by her doting father (Donald Sutherland). When wealthy bachelor Mr. Bingley takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz. Amongst the man's sophisticated circle of London friends and the influx of young military officers, surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters. Eldest daughter Jane, serene and beautiful, seems poised to win Mr. Bingley's heart. For her part, Lizzie meets with the handsome and, it would seem, snobbish Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), and the battle of the sexes is joined. Their encounters are frequent and spirited yet far from encouraging. Lizzie finds herself even less inclined to accept a marriage proposal from a distant cousin, Mr. Collins (Tom Hollander) and, supported by her father, stuns her mother and Mr. Collins by declining. When the previously good-natured Mr. Bingley abruptly departs for London leaving a devastated Jane, Lizzie holds Mr. Darcy culpable for contributing to the heartbreak. But a crisis involving youngest sister Lydia soon opens Lizzie's eyes to the true nature of her relationship with Mr. Darcy...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory DVD, Chocolate
Who better to bring Roald Dahls adored childrens story to life than the mastermind behind inventive films like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice. From Tim Burtons opening shot against Danny Elfmans eerie score this Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is recognisably darker than the Mel Stuartdirected 1971 version starring Gene Wilder. Though the mysterious chocolate factory has been closed for 15 year it continues to produce and ship candy all over the world. When a contest promises a tour of the plant to the lucky finders of five golden tickets hidden inside wrappers no one is more excited than Charlie Bucket an impoverished boy whose family lives mere steps from the factory. Though he can barely afford even one candy bar fate intervenes and Charlie finds the last golden ticket. Joined at the gates by a group of despicable brats named Veruca Salt Violet Beauregarde Augustus Gloop and Mike Teavee Charlie and his Grandfather venture inside proprietor Willy Wonkas delightful factory for a wild adventure. Each room is a feast for the eyes and more importantly the taste buds a sugarcoated dreamland where everything is edible. One by one however the children meet unfortunate fates until only Charlie remains in the company of Wonka and his curiously small workers the Oompa Loompas. Sporting a severe bob and talking in a highpitched voice Depp makes his Wonka even weirder than Wilders. While Burton adds some amusing contemporary touches (like the musical Oompa Loompa routines) and an elaborate back story he also preserves the charm of the original book. Overall Burtons visual innovation succeeds in capturing the vividness of a childs imagination but whether this version trumps the beloved 71 film is for viewers to decide. Contains 1 disc. Cert PG.

After having served a brief prison sentence for manslaughter, Joad arrives at his family's Oklahoma farm only to find it abandoned. Muley (John Qualen), a neighbor now nearly mad with grief, tells Tom of the drought that has transformed the farmland of Oklahoma into a desert and of the preying land agents who have plowed under the shacks of the sharecroppers. Joined by former hellfire preacher Casy (John Carradine), Tom finds his extended family, including Pa (Charles Grapewin) and his indomitable Ma (Jane Darwell), packing their ramshackle truck to seek work in the fields of California. As the family treks across the country, their dissolution begins with the deaths of Tom's grandparents at close intervals. When they arrive in California, the Joads find only an abundance of poverty-stricken migrants like themselves and little in the way of potential work. Yet, ever resilient, they maintain their dignity, hoping for the best. Among the talented cast, Fonda does perhaps the best work of his career, as does Qualen in the film's most haunting sequence. Director of photography Gregg Toland captures the suffering and the weathered, luminous nobility of the Joads and the other uprooted, drifting families, creating striking images equal to the best work of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans. In a stirring film that stands as a microcosm of the depression experience of millions, Ford gives poverty a human face in a way that was rare then and even rarer in the decades to follow as Hollywood films with a sense of class consciousness dwindled like a species nearing extinction. (Dir. John Ford, Cert. PG) My Darling Clementine (1946): After Wyatt Earp's (Henry Fonda) brother James is murdered by cattle rustlers, the frontier legend becomes Tombstone's marshal and sets out ...

I'm No Angel
Mae West's reputation for tweaking the noses of film censors was well-established by the time she made I'm No Angel, generally considered her most successful picture. The frank-speaking blonde bombshell delivered some of her most classic double entendres in this 1933 film, her second consecutive outing opposite the luminous Cary Grant. The two had made She Done Him Wrong earlier that year, and in I'm No Angel West does Grant wrong again, to hilarious effect. West plays her typical floozy, a carnival dancer, who escapes a murder charge and cozies her way into high society, where she famously tells her maid: 'Beulah, peel me a grape.' Eventually, she wins Grant, then drops him and sues him for breach of contract. Rarely has a more intelligent, sexually powerful, and dominant female figure been seen on screen, and West is at her sizzling comic peak. Already a major entertainment figure, West rode the popularity of I'm No Angel to greater notoriety, but she never again teamed up with a male superstar so successfully. West's movies were among those most responsible for bringing a new era of censorship after the early 1930s.

Sin City
Walk down the right back alley in Sin City and you can find anything... Welcome to Sin City. This town beckons to the tough, the corrupt, the brokenhearted. Some call it dark. Hard-boiled. Then there are those who call it home. Crooked cops. Sexy dames. Desperate vigilantes. Some are seeking revenge. Others lust after redemption. And then there are those hoping for a little of both. A universe of unlikely and reluctant heroes still trying to do the right thing in a city that refuses to care. Three stories - shocking, suspenseful and searing - come to the fore in a new motion picture from co-directors Frank Miller (comics idol and author of the Sin City comics) and Robert Rodriguez - with special guest director Quentin Tarantino! Sin City was one of several films around the world to be shot on a completely 'digital backlot'; with all the acting shot in front of a green screen and the backgrounds added during post-production). While the other movies Immortel (ad vitam) (2004), Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004), and Casshern (2004) were shot first, Rodriguez's use of High-Definition digital cameras (like 'Sky Captain') in addition to the 'backlot' method makes Sin City one of the world's first 'fully-digital' live action motion pictures. Desperate to create Sin Cityas a translation rather than a 'Hollywood' adaptation, Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller actually used the panels from the original comic books as storyboards for the movie. The visual style strongly echoes the comics throughout, with the black and white footage broken up, momentarily, by splashes of colour in certain scenes - a similar effect was used in Pleasantville. Needless to say, this all contributes to make - possibly - the greatest, most authentic comic book 'translation' yet...

Coming hard on the heels of Keaton's comic masterpiece, The General, this was a relaxing romp in both setting and approach after the exacting precision of the American Civil War comic-drama. Disney Enchanted DVD
With a fine cast and fun in-jokes, Disney's Enchanted is sure to cast a spell over both children and adults. It begins with a 2-D animation sequence reminiscent of the company's beloved past. Surrounded by dozens of cute animals, Giselle (voiced and later played by Amy Adams) sings about her desire to find her one true love. Meanwhile, a handsome prince (James Marsden) overhears her, and they meet and fall in love. In many Disney movies, this is where the story ends, but Enchanted is just starting out on its journey. The princes wicked stepmother (Susan Sarandon) cant stand to lose her throne, so she pushes Giselle down a well, and the beauty ends up in the real world. Gone is the animated fantasy, and a live-action Giselle lands in the middle of Times Square in New York City. Her optimism and perkiness put her at odds with the New Yorkers she encounters, but she gets help from a cynical divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) as she waits for her prince to rescue her. Fans of Disney classics from Sleeping Beauty to Beauty And The Beast will be glad to see their favourite films referenced in Enchanted. Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid) makes a brief appearance, and the evil queen threatens to kill Giselle with a poisoned apple a la Snow White. Though it reminds the audience of past favourites, Enchanted boasts its own script that is at once intelligent and heartwarming. But the true highlight of the film is the acting by the fairy tale couple. Marsden (Hairspray) couldn't be funnier as the charming prince, while Adams (an Oscar nominee for 2005s Junebug) gives dimension to the heroine. As a result, Enchanted is a film that deserves to sit on a shelf with Disneys classics. Contains 1 disc. Cert PG.

Titanic (2 Discs)
Titanic is a four part serial created by BAFTA-winning producer Nigel Stafford-Clark (Warriors; The Way We Live Now; Bleak House) and written by Oscar and Emmy winner Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park; Downton Abbey) to mark the hundredth anniversary of the world's most famous maritime disaster in April 1912. It sets out to tell the story not just of a single ship, but of an entire society - one that was heading towards its own nemesis in the shape of the First World War as carelessly as Titanic towards the iceberg. This world, soon to vanish forever, is brought alive by a cast of over 80, featuring the cream of acting talent from Britain and beyond, including Linus Roache (Law & Order; Batman Begins), Geraldine Somerville (Harry Potter; Cracker), Celia Imrie (Bridget Jones's Diary; Kingdom), Toby Jones (My Week with Marilyn; Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; Captain America), Maria Doyle Kennedy (The Tudors; The Commitments), Perdita Weeks (The Promise; The Tudors; Lost in Austen), Jenna-Louise Coleman (Waterloo Road; Emmerdale), Steven Waddington (Sleepy Hollow; Last of the Mohicans), Lyndsey Marshal (Hereafter; Being Human; Rome), Ruth Bradley (Primeval), Peter McDonald (The Damned United; City of Vice) and Timothy West (Bleak House; Ever After; The Day of the Jackal) amongst many others. All human life is on Titanic as she sets out on her maiden voyage. The upper-class family with their suffragette daughter and their warring servants; the wealthy elite of American society; the Irish lawyer in Second Class with his embittered wife; the young cabin steward and the impetuous Italian waiter who falls for her; the Catholic engineer fleeing Belfast with his wife and family to escape the sectarian conflict; the mysterious stranger in Steerage fleeing who knows what. And then there are the officers and crew. As their stories interweave and we find our first impressions are often undermined by what we learn, there is one thing that we know for certain and they do not - that not all of them will survive.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Boxset DVD
After the death of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry in 1991, writers/producers Rick Berman and Michael Piller carried on the Star Trek franchise with the second spinoff television series, Deep Space Nine. Considered by many to be the best of the Star Trek spinoffs, Deep Space Nine broke with its predecessors' peripatetic tradition by centering the action in a single location--a space station orbiting the war-torn planet of Bajor-thus allowing for a non-episodic story arc and sophisticated character development. The series also broke new ground with Star Trek's first African-American ship commander, Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), who presided over a diverse group of crew members that included an alien shapeshifter, Odo (Rene Auberjonois), among its numbers. Dark, imaginative, and compelling, Deep Space Nine is presented in its entirety with this seven-series collection. Contains 49 discs. Cert 15.
