Here's to [faux] fur, here's to working winter weather, and here's to Carrie's unabashed and iconic overdressing in the legendary show Sex and the City. I like to take a leaf out of her book whenever my housemates accuse me of being 'extra' for wearing big, beautiful coats, because there ain't nothing wrong with being warm and looking good doing it. Fur and velvet are my favourite AW17/18 trends, so why not work them in jacket form? Don't ever let anyone put you down for dressing up; as my sister always says, it's better to be overdressed than underdressed. You do you, boo.

The search for the ultimate winter boots is over thanks to Dear Frances. Designer Jane Frances launched her luxury footwear brand in London in 2014 with a timeless-with-a-twist ethos and exquisite craftsmanship at its heart and it’s generating quite the buzz. Chances are you’ve seen the now cult Spirit boots, a classic, heeled ankle style, on the likes of Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Amal Clooney in various colours, highlighting their cross-generational appeal and unparalleled versatility. And there are the Float boots, Dear Frances’ take on the Chelsea boot, which have lucite accenting the wooden heel- a genius identifiable detail that is fast becoming a signature. Every elegant style has been designed with comfort in mind, to be easily worn all day, every day for years to come.

Dear Frances also deserves credit for its ethical production processes and partnerships with non-profit organisations. The boots are expertly crafted by artisans in Italy, at the same family-owned factory where London College of Fashion graduate Frances previously interned, and with only the finest sustainable materials- from supple leather and suede to decadent velvet are used. The theory is that by creating the highest quality boots possible at an accessible price point, waste and over-production will be minimised as they’ll endure. Clearly these are boots worth stockpiling and investing in, even more so when you realise that the brand sends a pair of shoes to a person in need for every pair sold. It’s part of Dear Frances’ mission to help people worldwide while creating shoes that make you look and feel amazing.

When comfort meets style we all gasp with excitement and relief! One of those chic combinations is the undeniable allure of wearing dresses with trainers. This trend started a few seasons ago and it shows no signs of slowing down. If you simply scroll on your Insta you'll find more than a few influencers sporting their favourite sneaker with a dress. If you're still unsure of how to wear the trend, fear not we have you covered!

Take notes from Lilly Allen, circa 2006 and wear your favourite tennis sneakers with a full tulle skirt or dress. Add a hair bow for effect!

One of the biggest pattern trends of 2018 is polka dots. So why not get your fave polka dot dress out of the closet and wear it with a chunky pair of "ugly" dad sneakers.

Mix and Match. Go for a velvet floral number which is quite chic and evening and sport it with basic grey trainers to create a well- balanced outfit.

Go for Bold. Try an ultraviolet (pantone colour of the year) dress and pair it with an equally vavavoom shade on your sneakers like mustard or blue. The end result is pure confidence.

The secret’s out: the Duchess of Cambridge’s favourite brand Reiss is having an online sale. Get up to 50% off their bestsellers, including the second-to-none coats that the royal and Kylie Jenner have both stepped out in. Taking full advantage of this incredible discount is a surefire way to elevate your winter wardrobe with authenticity and originality for less. Reiss’ modern classics- which include cool leather trousers, statement shirts and coveted accessories - always have directional twists that set them apart without compromising their impeccable quality and meticulous attention to detail.

The British brand was founded by David Reiss and has been delivering design-led menswear and womenswear since 1971. While there is a nod to current trends, like the strokeable shearling gilet or velvet loafers, the in-house design team aim to create standout styles with cross-generational appeal that ultimately transcend them. The role-call of stylish women and men who wear Reiss have wildly different tastes and shapes which is a testament to the brand’s versatility, from polished cool-girl Olivia Palermo and bombshell Emily Ratajkowski to suave actor Tom Hiddleston and the now default band The Jonas Brothers.

What Reiss does best is filling previously unseen wardrobe gaps and delivering fresh propositions on your go-to styles. For the parties still to come this holiday season, the lace top jumpsuit will make you a strong contender for best dressed guest, just like the unexpected texture of the moleskin tailored trousers. A pair of black leather heeled boots is a must-buy for any season along with a day-to-night black button-up shirt.

There have been some amazing dresses on the red carpet this year, but some of the most outstanding have been the velvet dresses. They are simply elegant and beautiful, and look good on any figure. I love all three of the dresses above, but my favourite is the strapless black dress. It is classy and the colour goes with absolutely anything! #redcarpet #velvetdresses Credit: thecatwalkitalia Instagram

In light of the New Year I wanted to share a few of my favourite style crushes of 2017. They are in no particular order but the first - Megan Ellaby - is definitely up there as a long-standing fave. Manc gal Megan never fails to give me wardrobe envy. Megan makes clashing, bold patterns work. Colours and textures from velvet to heavy sequins are what Megan is all about. I would definitely recommend giving her blog and YouTube channel a go. Image credit: Instagram @meganellaby

If you’re wondering what the coolest girls are wearing this New Year's Eve, look no further than the velvet suit. ‘Why?!’ We hear you cry. Because as tactile and as luxe as this tailored two-piece is, and yet another winning '70s throwback, it never looks too try-hard. Quite unlike a dress or cleverly co-ordinated separates. That’s the key point and Alexa Chung and Poppy Delevingne have both rocked this look in the past.

To (velvet) suit up yourself: Mango is a great place to start with its unexpected colour palette and tasteful cuts. Plus you’ll get even more dressing inspo from the brand's own gaggle of cool-girl ambassadors, Camille Charrière included. If you’re going down the designer route, try Racil, Haider Ackermann (a velvet suit specialist) and Saint Laurent (Yves Saint Laurent did create the iconic Le Smoking suit after all) for stunning suiting that will last a lifetime. Underneath add a wisp of a camisole or nothing but a spritz of perfume.

Click through the gallery above for styling tips and shop our expert edit below. Lots of them have hit the sale!

Who said tailoring equates to formal wear? As any Saville Row tailor would admit, optimal tailoring can be part of any occasion as long as you know how to do it properly. With our help sporting a tailored outfit for any occasion should be a breeze.

LAYERING

Although there's no formula per se, there are a few commandments you can easily follow to nail the ultimate sartorial guise of layering. A transitional wardrobe requires a statement winter item that you can use to strategically inform the rest of your outfit. Opt for a long all-purpose coat a shirt blazer and a pair of tactile fabric trousers like herringbone or corduroy. With your key item in mind, play around with the rest of your outfit combining textures, hues and fabrics accordingly.

WORKWEAR

Update your standard office rig with a check coat that says smart-casual dressing at its finest. The finished look can be dialled up or dialled down depending on your mood. Don't be afraid to try a mismatched fabric combo! It will only give an alternative edge to your typical business look.

CASUAL TAILORING

Think of an undone version of your basic formal wear; a mesh of tailored pieces with unstructured items reaching a fine equilibrium between a rigid suit and a slouchy weekend wardrobe. Don a come-as-you-are nonchalance by combining tailored trousers with relaxed jumpers and sleek white trainers. The world is your very fashionable yet comfy oyster.

EVENING

When it comes to reaching dapper AF status remember that tailoring is more important than the actual suit. If you can afford it, consult with a personal tailor that can truly make or break the outfit. With the customised suit at hand, opt for a buttoned-down white crisp shirt, and loafers. When it comes to fabric choice we say to go the extra evening mile and choose velvet. It's after all one of the key fabrics of the season.

This is such a cute look from fashion blogger, Kayla! The pink and blue tones of the tartan skirt complement the velvet body perfectly! I love the fact that she has styled it up with oversized outerwear for more of a tomboy-ish feel. So cool! #ootd #kaylahadlington #bloggerstyle #fashion #outfitinspo Photo Credit: @kaylahadlington on Twitter
