NYC born, Carolyn Compres is the author and Founder the C Statement and a contributor to Taste The Style. She's a Fashion Merchandising student, wife and mama of two who feeds on chocolate and vino. She's an amazing example of a young mum with an exquisite sense of style and our Influencer Focus this week! We caught up with Carolyn and talked about current go-to items, her personal style and all that behind-the-scenes-work that goes in maintaining a blog today.

What compelled you to start a blog?#500050">

I had always wanted to do it but it wasn’t until I gave birth to my first daughter and had to spend a lot of my time at home that I did it. I didn’t feel like I could be at an office from 9-5 because my daughter was too young and I just couldn’t do leave her (first baby problems). Doing this really made me think of things I could do from home and that I was still passionate about, and it occurred to me that I had always wanted to blog. I had a lot of fears, especially the fear of being judged but I got passed them and did it. I am extremely glad I did because I couldn’t be happier with what I have accomplished in a year.#500050">

What's your relationship with fashion? How did it start and what motivates you to keep at it?

Ever since I was a little girl I was extremely passionate about dressing up. I guess it started by seeing my mom and looking at her dress up, it just made me really interested in fashion. I used to collect Vogue Magazines back when I lived in the Dominican Republic and I knew I wanted to dress like those people I saw on the magazines. It’s not hard to keep motivated at it because I feel it comes naturally but sometimes I get a ‘fashion block’ just like writers do and that’s when it becomes a little harder.#500050">

How would you define your personal style? Do you have any icons people accounts that you follow?#500050">

I don’t have a definition for my personal style. I would like to think I am a chameleon, I am willing to try anything at all and I guess that what makes my style. When it comes to inspiration, my biggest inspiration is everyone and everything I see on the streets of NY. Instagram accounts that inspire me are @alwaysjudging and @mirandamakaroff. Both very different styles, but they inspire me in so many ways on a daily basis.#500050">

What do you enjoy most about mixing and matching high street with high end clothing i.e. from YOOX?#500050">

To me, it has always been about the clothing. It doesn’t matter what brands I am shopping or how much does it cost, all that matters is that I like it and I think that’s what I love about it. Using clothes that you are genuinely proud of wearing and not because someone is paying you or because it is socially acceptable to wear it.#500050">

Can you give us 3 styling rules that you abide by?#500050">

I don’t think there are any rules in fashion and that’s what I love about it. You should wear whatever you feel like wearing and forget about the rules.#500050">

What are your current go-to items when getting ready in the morning?#500050">

My current go-to items in the morning are my white Mango boots, my Gucci belt, and my Tory Burch sweater (Its freezing in NY).#500050">

What's the biggest misconception about having your own blog?#500050">

I think the biggest misconception about having a blog is that you need to wear certain items, or that you need to follow certain rules. Be yourself, be confident, and don’t give a shit about what others think.#500050">

What's your morning routine? (makeup beauty styling breakfast)#500050">

I love skin care, and it’s something I want to talk a lot more about with my audience. Although it might sound vain, but your face is so important because everything you do with it people will see. There is no covering up, although makeup helps it isn’t magic. That’s why having a good beauty routine is important, I am still learning about my face therefor not claiming to know anything about it but the most important thing about my morning routine is my skincare routine, I wash my face with Avène : Cleanance Gel, then I tone with Caudalie: Beauty Elixir, then I essence with SK-II: Facial Treatment Essence, then I use a serum from the Glossier 3 pack and then moisturize with Avène: Cleanance Expert, and finish with Milk Makeup’s: Cooling Water for under eye puffiness and  Sunshine Skin Tint which contains both SPF and a little bit of preservative free foundation. I am not a breakfast person but I always have a Starbucks Grande Nonfat Capuccino to go!

What projects are you working on now?#500050">

There are many exciting projects on the works. A lot of brand collaborations coming at the end of the month and then there are other personal projects I am little too superstitious to tell just yet.

As we've reached mid November our minds are already in Christmas mood. Pre-Christmas period is the best time to indulge in picking party wear that we can sport all season long! From sparkly dresses, to sequinned tops, floor skimming skirts and embellished blazers we're constantly coming up with new ways to don holiday party wear.

Styling is key for party dressing. Try investing in one party dress that you fell in love with, while playing with different styling ideas. You can belt it and add definition to your waist, wear it with a pair of chunky ankle boots sparkly accessories and tights. Try a velvet party dress in an emerald tone, one of the most prominent trends of the season with kitten heels and a cute little blazer. Opt for a sequinned flapper dress and pair it with a structured coat and thigh high leather boots for a killer party season look.

Whatever your style this holiday season, remember to wear your most flattering accessory, your smile, and have an amazing time. So make sure you're comfortable in addition to looking fab and elegant.

The best time of the year for dresses 🙌🙌

With temperatures falling to a new low this week, figuring out a way to stay elegant and chic in the cold is one of the top priorities on the list. Chunky knit jumpers, and heavy fabrics like corduroy are a fantastic method to keep the chilly breeze away although they can be difficult to style effortlessly. Most women when we wake up in the morning with only a limited time allocated to our everyday styling, it's essential to go for simplicity.

A modern chic way with which we can defy the cold without sacrificing our need to look stylish. Enter, the sweater dress. This type of elongated sweater is an amazing item as it's extremely versatile yet warm and cosy. Add a belt to give definition to your waist and sport it with wool thigh high socks, with opaque tights or knew high flat boots. Embellish your look with a faux fur teddy bear coat, a hat, scarf and gloves. The weather is not joking. Finally finish your look with a luxe black leather backpack that you can wear from the office to a late night cap.

The great advantage of opting for a sweater dress is that it offers an abundance of styling options and it's also one of the key items for layering. Wear it with an open hoodie for a sporty look, a check blazer for a smart casual look, a leather jacket for a party look or a long fuzzy coat for pretty much any occasion!

Edward Enninful's first British VOGUE cover was meant to cause attention, to make a clear statement that VOGUE UK is entering a new era, that it will be more inclusive more diversified and less elitist. In his quest for the perfect cover model he unsurprisingly went with British model and feminist activist Adwoa Aboah and for the revolutionary, female empowering and optimistic decade of the 80s in the styling and make up.

Being chosen for the celebration of this transitional era must be a tremendous honour. Aboah has already appeared on the cover of American VOGUE alongside Ashley Graham, Liu Wen, Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. She has also been on the cover of VOGUE Italia and i-D. She has an organisation for young women called Gurls Talk tackling issues that she too has suffered like depression and drug addiction.

Her short boyish blonde hairdo speaks volumes of her non-challance and laissez faire attitude. She puts comfort and practicality up in her priority list without compromising her effortless style. From check pant suits, to large yellow aviator glasses, to a pair of simple denim flared trousers, to a black leather dress, her style is unapologetic, dynamic and 100% Adwoa.

One of the most prominent International bloggers and street style stars featured in WWD and Glamour, is a girl that really knows how to play to her fashion strengths. Happy Friday! We introduce you to a new instalment at Shopcade. Every week we will present an influencer, content creator or fashion muse that we find inspiring. #222222">This week we sat down with blogger and creator of Hues of White, Santina Harisson to talk about creating a blog in 2017, inspiration, morning routines and how to style denim!

#222222">
#222222">What compelled you to start a blog?

I founded huesofwhite.com in October 2016 as a way to express my love of Art, Beauty, Fashion and Lifestyle. You will find chronicles of my daily musings and personal styling on huesofwhite.com. I also want to make people feel beautiful, confident in what they are wearing and inspire my readers through visual content and affordable clothing. My blog for me, represents who I am, a colourful, fun, likes to try anything kind of girl!
#222222">
#222222">What's your relationship with fashion? How did it start and what motivates you to keep at it?

I’ve always admired fashion from a young age and use to really enjoy trying on my mum’s vintage clothing and putting a little of her Chanel red lipstick on and thinking just how much I loved clothes! As I’ve always been interested in fashion and interior, I wanted to create an outlet where I could express my love for this industry. So whilst talking to my friend in PR early last year, the concept of Hues of White came about and I haven’t looked back since!
#222222">
#222222">How would you define your personal style? Do you have any icons people accounts that you follow?

My personal style is always evolving and the older I’m getting the better my decisions! I love to admire street styles and take note from these kind of girls. For me styling is all about working with what you currently have in your wardrobe whilst pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. My icons for inspiration are Lucy Williams, Aimee Song and Alexandra Spencer (she’s created the eclectic brand Realisation Par). Three different styles, three different takes on fashion but they wear things that identify to their personality!

You have an affinity for denim. What makes it special? And what do you look for in a quality denim purchase?

It’s no secret that I am a super huge fan of denim and they form an important piece to my wardrobe - I basically live in them if I’m honest! But what I think makes denim so special is that you can constantly find new ways to wear them. They are super versatile so I can wear the same pair in the day for a casual relaxed look and then completely transform them for an evening look, like these PAIGE jeans I am wearing from TRILOGY store, in London. I genuinely haven’t been able to take them off! The straight cut with raw hem is perfect for the AW17 trend and the quality of these are super sturdy so they don’t lose their fit. Which for me is the most important thing I look for when I purchase any kind of denim.
#222222">
#222222">Can you give us 3 ways to style denim?

To me, denim is the perfect base with which to pair anything that shows a little more or pushes you out of your comfort zone.

Going to work? Pair your jeans with a railroad-striped blazer and a T-shirt. It’s the perfect outfit equation for starting your day off right like I have here in my Paige Jeans from Trilogy Store.

For a casual look, try pairing bold accessories like a red scarf or bag, plus a printed top. It’s a sure fire way to make your jeans feel fresh.

Date Night? Slip on a pair of your statement heels teamed with either your favourite skinny or boyfriend style jeans, a lace top and you’re ready to start the night off right!
#222222">
#222222">What's the biggest misconception about having your own blog?

That it’s the easiest job in the world, because it’s far from that- it requires a lot of creative work and hours!
#222222">
#222222">What's your morning routine like?

Mornings at home are my favourite, and I love that I get to start the day how I want (it’s the only part of the day where I can slow down and enjoy my time!) My morning ritual normally includes playing a little music to get the day started off positively and I love making my own breakfast which tends to be a super bowl of ACAI in some form, mixed with fruit and granola (which my kids love!) whilst sipping a cup or two of coffee! I don’t wear a lot of makeup, and always try to keep it to a minimum but my morning routine is generally made up of tried-and-true look of natural makeup and gently waved hair and prepping my skin with REN’s gentle cleansing gel and supplement moisturising cream. I can’t live without these and pop them along in my bag wherever I go.
#222222">
#222222">What projects are you working on now?

Every time I get approached for a collaboration or get offered a job, I feel like it's a stamp of approval because it means my opinion matters so the products I have been working on mean the world to me. I have just finished working with Trilogy Stores on the perfect pair of Denim Pants for AW17 (here) but I am currently working with DUNE London to show you three ways to wear this season’s hottest boot trend and three ways to dress up sneakers! I am also currently working on something super special with REN and Olivia Rubin. So watch this space!

You've seen them on Kaia Gerber, the Hadid sisters can't get enough. We're talking about the ultimate footwear comeback staple from the 90's, the grunge era of combat boots and tea dresses. Even before the Chicago grunge era of Nirvana and Courtney Love combat boots such as Dr. Martens, were causing head waves across the country with the punk rock of movement in all its vinyl, PVC and fishnet glory.

For 2017, the vibe is quite muted and nuanced. Although we may see lots of touches from the previously mentioned punk trends, the styling now has an amazing way of looking elegant and put together though maintaining that tough, rocker edge. Combat boots are also surprisingly complimentary to all shapes and sizes.

Firstly they come with that tiny rubber heel that gives a few cheeky inches to a petite figure. Also, it has a very clever slimming effect. The chunkiness of the boot actually juxtaposes to the calf and elongates the leg as a result. Nothing wrong with that!

Go for a full 90's resurgence look by sporting your combat boots with a frilly tea dress, minimal make-up and a knit cardigan.

Opt for an 80's look by adding a LBD and fishnets. For an up-to-date take on the trend, mix a slip dress under an oversized knit and finish the look with a pair of white Dr. Martens.

Have a look at our gallery for more inspiration and shop all of you essentials from the list below!
