If the thought of piling on gives you an uneasy stomach, fear not. The art of layering has never looked better. Although it's an American tic, think the Olsen twins during the mid -noughties, being enclosed in layers of bohemian fabric and oversized coatigans, the Parisians have employed it with effortless ease too. Experimental layering is a dominant issue on the fashion agenda, especially when deciding on what to wear in chilly weather.

Take Paris Fashion Week for example. Fashion editors from across the globe (not only from the US) showcased their unique vision to nailing the layering craft. We've compiled a few of the best piling-on tricks we discovered on the streets of Paris you can try now.

TONAL

Try the tonal approach by opting for slightly differentiated hues of the same colour and wear it from head-to-toe. Throw in an unexpected colour like white or coral to juxtapose to the monochrome look.

ADD A ROLLNECK

Rollnecks have many charms being one of the best options for workwear and smart casual alike. Just take cues from Audrey Hepburn's fail-proof styling in 1957's Funny Face for more inspiration.  With your key item in place strategically create the rest of your outfit.

GO FOR COATIGAN

A knitted coatigan is your best bet when layering. Just throw it over some of the season's natural fabrics like linen, cotton and hemp and style it with bold and chunky accessories.

ADD SOME LEATHER

Layering offers a great opportunity to experiment with texture. Don't be afraid to wear your leather jacket under your main coat or trench in a samey colour.

DON'T FORGET THE PUFFER

Now might be the best time to invest in a slim quality puffer jacket. Wear it in the same colour just under your coat or trench. To avoid the same shade from top to bottom add a pop of colour in your accessories like a tangerine bag or mules.

MFW street style look number three, well it is me after all so there was bound to be some leopard print. I'm usually not a cardigan person at all. Practically yes they're great and keeping you warm but style-wise no I don't want to throw something on top of my perfectly curated outfit. That's what I thought at least until I saw this knitted two piece. I guess this is an alternative to a skirt suit. It's neat and chic and well, leopard print. Honestly what is not to love? I have always loved #tartan. There is something about it that is just perfect in winter. It looks and feels cosy in bags, skirts, jackets - tartan works on everything in so many colours. Here Lucy Williams (photo from her Instagram @lucywilliams02) wears a #MatchesFashion bag which works perfectly with her faux fur and knitted polo neck. Winter perfection.

Maybe it’s a clever tactic to simultaneously keep warm and spread a little holiday cheer, or just Save the Children’s genius charity fundraising idea but Christmas jumpers are officially a thing. And as it’s Christmas Jumper day this Friday 15th December, if you see one you like: buy it and put it on asap. All your favourite brands have knitted up some real festive treats from witty puns and slogans, to reindeer and gingerbread motifs, and a sprinkling of stars for those trying to limit the tacky factor. Opt for a tinsel style if you want to take yours into partywear territory. The best thing about a cosy Christmas jumper is that you can wear them everyday over the holidays, no matter your age and size, and the extra room to house an inevitable food baby come Boxing Day is a bonus. To join in properly, Save the Children only asks for a £2 donation in exchange for flaunting your delightful knit.

Shop the Christmas jumpers that get a thumbs up from us below.

I have always been a 'hat person'. For as long as I remember I'd have a little sun hat, a knitted bauble piece, a spotted rain hat. It feels me with utter joy that the beret seemingly never goes out of fashion. Or if you want to be 'that girl' I lived in the Basque Country for a year, the origin of the beret, and it's native name is txapela (pronounced cha-peh-la). Pandora Sykes is totally blending into her French surroundings here in a red beret, complete with matching lip. Image: Instagram @pandorasykes

Angelina Jolie has always been heralded a beauty, alongside being a wonderful actress, activist, mother; the list continues. And whatever she is doing she always looks great doing it. For a casual yet chic look here Jolie is in a loose roll neck knitted dress. Her only accessory is her oversized sunglasses and her hair is pulled back making the dress the focal point. Sometimes less is actually more glam than ever. Image: Vogue

Loose fits may be on trend but that doesn't mean those body-hugging numbers are on the way out. If you want to show off that physique you've been working on all summer then ribbed sweaters and sweatshirts are where it's at.
