We’ve come to the conclusion that hair slides are seriously underrated as an accessory. Used to clip back a pesky fringe or to decorate an otherwise ordinary hairstyle, Alexa Chung and cult film character Margot Tenenbaum are the poster girls for this off-beat look. The witty words Ashley Williams' have spelled out in crystals have made great streetstyle fodder in recent seasons and it’s now Simone Rocha’s pearls styles that are nestling on the heads of some of the world’s best dressed women. Besides Chung, who’s been spotted out and about at London Fashion Week wearing more than one at once; presenter Laura Jackson is a big fan and wore a pair for her wedding. Pandora Sykes has snapped herself wearing one on Instagram and we’ve noted that what they all have in common is a penchant for jaunty lobs (long bobs). But Solange’s ’A Seat at the Table’ album artwork proved that hair slides will wow in hair of a longer length depending on the arrangement.

Now that it’s getting warmer, we’d suggest swapping your woolly hat for a eye-catching hair slide. No other jewellery is needed and you can give your ears a rest from heavy statement earrings and build your look around it. Start with one: the more you add, the more attention and compliments you’ll attract. Wire kirby grips are the answer if you’d like to take an ultra minimalist approach- hide tonal ones in your hair and be a little bolder with metallic or bright colours. The fact that they are comparatively cheaper than other accessories is a big bonus and, as size does matter, make sure your hair can hold the slide in place. A spritz of hair spray will help if needed.

Gifting chocolates and roses on Valentine’s day is standard. Something sweet for your sweetheart makes sense, although they may be less than impressed if they’re religiously watching their waistline. Ah well cheat day it is. Because if you’re lucky enough to be gifted a box of chocolates, it would be rude not to try any (and finish the box to eliminate any further temptation). Don’t worry, your secret’s safe with us. And isn’t it so lovely to receive a beautiful bouquet of red roses? Especially at work with an audience even though they're are unlikely to last more than a week. They’ll add a splash of colour and a lovely fragrance to your home, conjuring visions of springtime ahead.

Never fear, we’re here to help you flip the script if it all sounds a bit too cliché. Chocolate-wise, rather than buying a generic box last minute from a nearby supermarket; spend a little bit more for treats from a chocolatier and widen their horizons with an unusual flavour among their favourites. When choosing their flowers consider this: do they actually like roses? If they do or you don’t have much time, fine and consider adding different colours and species to jazz it up. But don’t add fuel to the ‘Valentine’s day is nothing more than a hallmark holiday’ brigade if you could get them a bunch of different flowers they’d prefer. Peonies are pretty popular.

Red lips on Valentine’s day seems like the perfect beauty tradition. Not only can you leave cute kiss marks everywhere from your lover’s face to a note and on the mirror; they’re also bold and self-empowering. Slick on your most flattering shade (you might need professional help to find it), and your eyes are brighter, your smile wider and your pout is all the more enticing. It’s no coincidence that some of the biggest bombshells like Marilyn Monroe and cartoon Jessica Rabbit have made red lipstick their signature. And even though red is the tried-and tested colour of seduction, often used to uplift a LBD for unprecedented glamour after dark, it has plenty of daytime mileage with denim and neutrals as well.

But you can’t deny how high maintenance red lips are. And not really suitable for actual kissing either because one unintentional facial smudge or teeth smear kills the magic. There’s a lot of prep involved too: lips need to be exfoliated, then outlined and contoured before filling in (Kylie Jenner popularised over-lining: where you draw beyond your lip line to create the illusion of fuller lips). Matte, gloss or stain is the key question and determines the impact. Matte is dramatic but gloss will catch the light more and a stain is the most natural of the bunch with just a hint of colour. Keep last season’s just-kissed lipstick trend in mind as well because the slightly smudged application is gorgeous and adds an air of nonchalance.

With our eyes currently on the fashion week catwalks they can't help but occasionally stray to the streets. Fashion lovers are gathering en masse in cities to witness the upcoming trends and they're doing it en vogue. Stockholm has always been a city that just screams cool, or maybe whisper as that style is too cool to scream. A wonderful and surprising contrast of utterly cool, bold but almost understated. Nothing about this says try-hard, it's just perfect. Image: Vogue

Stop and smell the roses when it comes to beauty. Because the romantic flower is fragrancing and boosting regenerative products, making it an obvious choice for your Valentine’s Day prep. There’s a reason why grandmothers are perceived to slather rose-scented creams on as the rose smells sweet but also has anti-ageing, hydrating and soothing qualities too, according to facialist Nichola Joss. Therefore everyone can benefit from this natural ingredient, although its scent comes through strongest via an essential oil or in a rose water. And if you’re wondering what rose hip is, it's the flower’s uplifting fruit which is prettily potent.

So what skin dilemma are you looking to solve before your big date or hangout? If it’s dry patches on your face and body, a few daily drops of rose oil will help with that. After a rose mask primed to tone and make your skin radiant of course. A rose petal bath feels like a real luxury, so rather than destroying a bunch of actual roses, scatter Boux Avenue’s dissolvable petals instead as they release a relaxing fragrance or soak in rose bath salts. If it’s just the delicately intoxicating smell you’re after for yourself and to set the mood at home, spray a rose perfume or light a candle.

We can not deny the comfort of shorts and flip-flops, but this look will not help you earn points in style. Try better with a maxi dress, a versatile and tremendously comfortable garment that will take you from day to night, and if you know how to combine it, you will never fail.Credits: Pinterest

"You smell really good," is a compliment of holy grail magnitude. It’s praise for your personal hygiene (BO is much more commonly smelt) but also your beauty routine as whether you wear a perfume or not, the products you use do have a scent unless unscented. First impressions are everything but a seductive scent can also help you change a bad one for the better as you’ll forever be associated with a strong and emotive smell. And it’ll probably contain ‘musk’ which mirrors how the body’s natural scent intensifies during arousal. This person might want to get a little closer, perfect for breaking the ice with a colleague or crush, and listen to what you have to say. It’s biology and chemistry working together to help give you the confidence and the leverage you’ll need to push the goals and dreams for the year you’ve identified this month forward.

It’s also an impulse buy because it’ll make a great Valentine's Day gift for your loved one or yourself. When researching these scents, one was described as ‘sex in a bottle’, although that is an individual's preference, which will add an extra edge to a similarly seductive outfit. Consider the bottle shapes as well as these are likely to be prominently displayed; and if you can’t stretch to the eau du parfum, try a deodorant, hair mist or candle of the same scent. We know how personal perfumes are to people but a new one might be just what they need to freshen up their outlook.

Any trend that doesn’t really require ironing gets an extra thumbs up from us. Enter ruching (ruche), defined by Oxford Dictionary as a decorative frill or pleat of fabric, which sometimes has a drawstring attached so you can control and adapt it. You’ll remember the horizontal pleats (creases?) and fabric gatherings that took centre stage on the most memorable dresses in Pretty Women and your favourite ‘80s films. And for good reason because they showed off the wearer’s figure to mouth-opening effect, creating covetable curves. Ruching is one of Dolce & Gabbana’s bombshell signatures, while Kim Kardashian-West wore a sheer ruched minidress to the 2016 VMAs which spawned countless copycats. Balenciaga’s Creative Director Demna Gvasalia has given the technique a revamp, and most importably for our wardrobes, real daytime appeal by using it in his recent collections.

We’re most taken with ruched dresses, rather than tops, because they are winning one-and-done outfits. They’ll help you flaunt the fabulous figure you’ve been honing at the gym in a more notable, fashion-y way than a basic body-con dress. Whether the decorative detail is confined to the bust, employed to whittle your waist like an infinitely more comfortable corset, or all over: modern styles come in all lengths, shapes and colours with barely a whiff of the ‘80s. You can cover up or go sheer (visible underwear is another key micro trend, by the way, that Bella Hadid is owning) and the silhouette created will wow. Perfect, then, for any Valentine’s day dates you'll have coming up; during the day or after dark.

Even the biggest health nuts are prone to these bad habits, but as we enter 2018 it's time to live your best life yet! There are all of those tiny things we tend to do without even noticing that are seriously diminishing our quality of life. But we can take back control by simply acknowledging them. Here are a few examples of no no's:

1. Taking your smartphone everywhere: Even the bathroom because you get separation anxiety. We promise the world will not crumble if you don't have access to your phone for a few minutes.

2. Holding on to grudges. It never helps to hold it in. Excuse the pun. Release your frustration and move on. You have more important things to do.

3. You avoid confrontation. Just like the previous point, you have to express your issue to another person with regards to finding a solution. Problems don't go away by themselves unless we confront them head-on.

4. You postpone health checkups. Yes it's boring and you rather spend your free time doing much more exciting things than waiting in line for your GP but early detection can save you.

5. Binge-watching Friends on Netflix instead of meeting your actual friends.

6. You rely on social media for a self-esteem boost: Blogger Leandra Medine said it best in a recent interview. "Posting on Instagram constantly is a cry for help. I used to post more often when I felt bad about myself." There's no button for self -esteem it takes time and social media are irrelevant. Instead, re-connect with your close friends and family for the perfect self-care boost!
