Louisa Drake is a force to be reckoned with. A fitness expert, business founder and a serious source of lifestyle inspo, Louisa recently launched LDM, a fitness and lifestyle brand built on the principles of her own inclusive training method and her no-nonsense approach to health and wellness.   

We caught up with her to find out more about LDM, her motivations and of course, her style both in and out of the studio…   

So how does your method work? How can LDM sessions influence your lifestyle?  

At LDM we focus on body confidence and effective training techniques that educate clients on what their individual bodies need. My Method offers a host of fitness disciplines – cardio, conditioning, resistance and stretch – to keep the mind and body guessing and strengthen the muscles you use daily.   

Our whole approach is to encourage confidence, so the Fitzrovia and Muswell Hill studios are a welcoming space where our instructors will calmly guide you through a class, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and well worked, but never worked up and stressed.  

Who can take part in LDM classes?  

LDM classes are accessible to anyone, regardless of their experience, fitness level, shape or size. We have two boutique studios in London, where you can access small group classes and private training daily. We also have LDM online video subscriptions and range of fitness equipment and apparel for taking part at home.  

What inspired you to launch LDM – tell us about your journey...   

After a professional dance career I started to transition into teaching dance and fitness. I was known for my unique style and had several disciplines under my belt but I realised there was something lacking from the workouts I was doing as a client at other gyms and studios.  

I saw a gap for doing things my way and created LDM. After combining the best bits of popular disciples such as yoga, HIIT, Pilates to name just a few I created my signature total body workout that ticks all the boxes in one session – the Shape Changer, the perfect balance of cardio and conditioning material.   

Next month we celebrate our first birthday at our Fitzrovia studio which offers a range of LDM classes that are constantly being fine tuned to suit our clients’ needs.  

What does the word ‘wellness’ mean to you?  

Wellness really sums up being at your optimal best physically and mentally. For me it’s about finding the right balance – time to focus on my changing needs, to honour my own rhythms and have the energy to achieve everything I need.  

What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning?

My clients. Most mornings I’m either up early teaching group classes or I’m with a private client. The occasion I have a morning free, I’ll top up on sleep or schedule some time for myself on the mat.  

How important do you think physical health is to how happy and confident we feel?

Massively important. It should be the main reason you choose to work out and aesthetics are the bonus. The natural high we get from exercise is what keeps you committed.  

What about fashion and style – can what we wear make us happy?  

Absolutely, wearing something that helps you feel happy will be the reason your posture improves which will then be part of the reason your confidence improves and you carry yourself differently. You can express yourself through fashion and your own unique take on it. 

What are your feel-good outfits for work, the weekend and going out?  

I spend a lot of time in activewear and when I'm working out and training clients it’s all about supportive, feel-good fabrics. I select a sweat-wicking product that’s going to work hard for me when I’m back to back and versatile items that mean after a quick change I’m ready to go from studio to meeting.   

When I’m off-duty it’s a mix of denim, fun prints, slogan tees and a vintage feel is always present in my style. For going out I add some standout accessories, switch a trainer for shoe and opt for a dress or cool jumpsuit.  

What about your favourite brands?

Activewear brands such as Sweaty Betty, Lululemon, Lucas Hugh, Nike and Adidas keep me supported and stylish. For tees and sweaters I like British brand Double Trouble Gang – we collaborated on some limited edition LDM sweaters & hoodies. I also love brands such as Etre Cecile and Sezane for an injection of fun prints and slogan pieces.   

Free People, Reformation, ADAY, Faithfull the brand, Ganni and the Vampire’s Wife are labels I gravitate towards. I have some great jackets from Zoe Karssen, Whistles and Acne and my accessories are a mix of high street, vintage and investment pieces from Hill and Friends, Sezane, Laura Lee and Missoma.  

I’m often in trainers by Adidas, Nike and APL and I’m currently loving the Stella McCartney x Adidas Parley shoes made from recycled ocean plastics – they work for all cardio based workouts. Veja make eco-friendly Parisian cool trainers that I like for off-duty and I also like Russell & Bromley, Birkenstock, Soludos, Hobbs and Miu Miu.  

What’s next for you and for LDM? 

Plans are underway to open a bigger standalone LDM studio in London where clients can still benefit from small boutique group fitness and private training with more space and amenities. We have some exciting opportunities in the pipeline and I’m working hard to build up our online LDM video offerings, so we are accessible not just in London but anywhere and at anytime. September is #selfimprovement month and no wonder the hashtag's already trending. At this time of year we're usually throwing ourselves into that 'new start, new season, new me' mindset. Because let's face it, we probably didn't keep all the resolutions we made in January so we at least deserve another shot...

Now if you know anything about self improvement you'll know it's not about being negative or being hard on yourself for failing to change, it's about baby steps, tiny wins and good vibes.


Self improvement starts with self care so we've put together a few handy tips to help you kickstart your self improvement journey. September's a good a time as any to start something, right? 

Take time for yourself 

It's easy to feel like things will never change if you feel as though you're always running around after other people. Take a night off, spend a weekend with your loved ones or just indulge in some alone time to focus on your thoughts and quiet your mind. 

Get more sleep 

Sleep is essential for our health. A proper night's sleep helps our brains and bodies to properly recharge so we can do our best mental and physical work during the day. Try and set yourself the task of having earlier nights this month and if you find it hard to drop off, try a little aromatherapy with candles, pillow sprays, diffusers and essential oils.

Write down your goals 

Writing down what you want to change and how you want to do it can really help to visualise and focus on your short-term and long-term self improvement goals.

Practice happiness

Take a little time to do things that make you feel good, like going for a long walk, taking a relaxing bath with a facemask on or listening to an inspiring podcast. Doing little things like this for yourself will help with cultivating a positive mindset and if you feel positive, the sky's the limit.

Struggling to sleep in the summer heat? You’re not the only one. Seems like everyone’s circadian patterns are being disrupted by these warm summer nights but don’t fret, help is on the way…   


A decent night’s sleep is essential for our physical and mental health so eight hours of undisturbed shut-eye is a must. If the summer weather is keeping you up, try these tips to rest a little better and wake up feeling fresh.

Breathe

Deep breathing is the easiest way to relax so invest in essential oils, diffusers or pillow sprays and practice deep breathing for ten minutes while you settle down to sleep. You’ll find this helps you drift off quickly and that your heartbeat stays regular, helping you to sleep deeply and calmly.   

Lighten up

Opt for light layers made from natural fabrics like cotton, silk and linen. A pair of silk and lace pyjama shorts with a strappy camisole will feel cool and gentle against your skin, whereas an oversized cotton shirt will help your skin breathe in the heat.

Go natural

Choosing natural bed linen will also help to regulate your temperature while you sleep so consider investing in pure cotton and linen sheets and pillowcases.   

Cover up

No, we don’t mean cover your skin – just your eyes. Using a soft silk or cotton eye mask will encourage a deeper sleep. A gentle weight across the brow bones can help with relaxation and as sleep experts will tell you, the darker your surroundings are, the better you’ll sleep.

Feeling tired, sluggish and not particularly summer ready? It could be your diet. We looked to our panel of health and beauty experts for a few simple hacks to help you feel healthier, happier and ready to get your glow on this summer…   


Hydrate daily

Staying hydrated during the warmer months is so essential but often, we forget that we should be drinking a little more. To make sure you’re getting your daily H2O, invest in a cool bottle or fill a jug with water and keep it on your desk.   

TIP: Add lemon slices for a refreshing alkaline, electrolyte boost and a sprinkle of cayenne pepper for better digestion and to stem your cravings for sugar.   

Boost yourself

Drink green tea to refresh your body – matcha is great but if that’s a little intense, try a caffeine-free detox tea to reset your body and help flush out nasties. 

Watch your portion sizes

Use small bowls and measure out your snacks too. Weighing bits and pieces out into little containers to eat on the go always makes life easier too, especially if you find yourself feeling hangry in the afternoons.

Cook with recipes

Follow health-giving recipes exactly, don’t add more or less of anything and invest in a few cookbooks with easy, filling and nourishing recipes you can come back to time and time again.   

Keep a journal

This isn’t an excuse to obsess over food so don’t be hard on yourself, just try being mindful and record what you’re eating, how you’re feeling and whether you’ve had much sleep, exercised that day and so on. This will help you to find a balance and set realistic goals for yourself. 

Use coconut oil 

Not only great for your skin, this is a healthy fat that’s great for cooking with. Swap your vegetable oil for a dollop of coconut when you cook.    

Get your greens 

If this is a challenge for you try adding a sprinkle of spirulina to your foods, make green smoothies and juices to enjoy in the mornings or at lunchtime. You can also take supplements to keep your body balanced and stave off cravings.

Now that summer’s here, we’re investing in breezy warm-weather ensembles to see in the new season in style. Vacay-ready dresses and denim shorts in summer hues call for bronzed limbs but we’re not about to risk sun damage by hitting the poolside sans SPF. Instead, we’ll be opting for a quality self tan to achieve that healthy summer glow without exposing skin to harmful UV rays. 


Want to get the glow? Just follow our simple tips for achieving the perfect summer tan without compromising on your skin’s health… 

Choose wisely

Opting for a dark self tan might seem like a quick fix, but your glow is far more likely to look natural if you invest in a subtler shade. Make sure your skin tone matches whatever you pick and opt for something similar to a product you already enjoy using

For example, if lotion is your jam then a tanning cream could be for you. If you prefer something more lightweight on your skin, go for a spray or mousse. Work with whatever feels comfortable for you. 

Exfoliate

Be sure to prep your skin before applying your self tan. Use a quality exfoliating scrub in the shower to brush away dry skin and get your skin feeling clean, fresh and ready for application. Using bronzing products after exfoliating means your glow will last much longer.

Layer it

Get haircuts on the regular
