Fashion Week is so much more than style. During fashion week we get an inside look at the hair and makeup trends that we'll be sporting all next season. On a few lucky occasions like this years’ New York Fashion Week, it also reflects a shift in society on the very definition of beauty. This NYFW was bursting with a sense of change that was embracing activism, and celebrities that were more disrupting than your average celeb bunch.

From the breast cancer survivor Erica Hart, who walked at the Chromat show in a slip dress that was gracefully showing off her scars to the ten-year-old drag kid Desmond Napoles, who walked proudly at Gypsy Sport. To accommodate to this celebration of inclusivity and uniqueness, makeup and hairstyles were extravagant, rebellious and bold.

EYE FOCUS

The focus currently has shifted towards eye makeup featuring over the top looks such as black lashes and plastic bug eyes á la Gareth Pugh. There was gold glitter at Ulla Johnson and smoky eyes at Tom Ford or Alice + Olivia who traded the liquid eyeliner for a smudgy eye pencil. The eyeshadows surrendered to a rainbow effect with graphic edges in shimmering colours of pinks and purples. While Kate Spade opted for diamonds carefully glued on the models’ eyelids.

SUBVERSIVE HAIRDOS

When it comes to hair, the trend was all about spray products using all the essentials to create a  wet look. The accessories were over the top featuring 80’s leather headbands, throwback claw clips and irreverent updos put together with an army of hair gel.

BOLD LIPS

Whether it's two-tone pink and red lipstick, a healthy glow so extreme you're basically applying moon dust to your skin, red was a constant. The classic crimson lip became a powerful pout painted in a carefree fashion of individuality, whether it was in liquid form at Chromat or matte at Bottega Veneta.

HAIR DYE

Objecting to the single hair colour trend of seasons past, bold as they may have been, this time it was all about strategically placed streaks. The models at Sies Marjan wore pinks and blues while green and blonde short dos was also a trend at Marc Jacobs. Which of the makeup trends will you be trying this season? Take a moment to appreciate the best beauty looks of New York Fashion Week AW18 with us. Because Fashion Month is so much more than just clothes and this was our first chance to check out the hair and makeup trends we'll soon be sporting next season. As with the collections and shows themselves, which celebrated rebelliousness, inclusivity and uniqueness, the shift in society regarding the definition of beauty was reflected boldly and extravagantly.

Here are four of our favourites!

EYE FOCUS

It seems more is more again by the extravagant eye makeup choices on the NYFW catwalks. Ulla Johnson’s models have their eyelids dusted with gold glitter, while Tom Ford presented his own take on sexy smoky eyes, and Alice + Olivia traded liquid eyeliner for smudgy eye pencil. The eyeshadows surrendered to a rainbow effect with graphic edges in shimmering colours of pinks and purples at Oscar de la Renta and Anna Sui. We can’t wait to DIY Kate Spade’s eye makeup: sparkling diamonds carefully glued onto eyelids.

SUBVERSIVE HAIRDOS

The main trend was wet look hair, created by sprays that worked on every texture as seen on the Row catwalk by hairstylist Eugene Souleiman. The accessories were pretty maximalist: with 80’s leather headbands, throwback claw clips and irreverent gelled updos among the best of the bunch.

BOLD LIPS

Red was a colour constant, even when paired with pink for two tone lips. And it was masterfully set off with a healthy glow so extreme it will look like you applied moon dust to your skin. This classic crimson became a powerful pout, although painted in a carefree fashion, in liquid form at Chromat and matte at Bottega Veneta.

HAIR  DYE

Swap the single hair colour of seasons past, as bold as it is, for strategically placed streaks. The models at Sies Marjan wore pinks and blues, while green and blonde short dos made an appearance at Marc Jacobs. Which of the makeup trends will you be trying this season? Shop all the beauty and hair essentials from our expert edit below!

The incredible costumes in 'Black Panther' exceeded our wildest expectations, and so has Lupita Nyong’o 's style in her most recent appearances. Yet again. Because the Kenyan-Mexican actress, who plays Nakia in the groundbreaking movie, first marked herself out as a red carpet fashion superstar on her way to winning her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for ’12 Years A Slave.’ And to promote her most high profile film since, she’s wowed at every turn. There was the floaty purple gown anchored with a jewelled harness she twirled in at the New York premiere; the low cut, high slitted black gown dusted in silver that she wore for the London one; and our favourite look of the lot? The brown Dolce & Gabbana dress she wore at a New York screening of the film earlier this week. This was Nyong’o’s take on nude and she looked like a dream- with the corset bodice and all-over ruching defining her curves. Shimmering metallic earrings, heels and a clutch were the finishing touches. The actress has been flexing her sartorial muscles off the red carpet as well by rocking a on-point blue pencil skirt look at the AW18 Calvin Klein show; and also made the case for double patent by wearing a shiny black trench and matching trousers together on the street. Massive props to her stylist Micaela Erlanger as well.

We don’t think we’re exaggerating to say that Nyong’o’s gorgeous make-up and head-turning hairstyles take her already stunning outfits to another level. Seemingly picking up where the film’s hair department head Camilla Friend left off, the actress has teased her natural hair into a towering twisted top knot, a fluffy high ponytail, sculptural puffs and more in recent works. What wonderful expressions of black beauty! We can't wait to see what she wears next.

Don’t forget about yourself when you’re spreading the love this Valentine’s Day. Pat yourself on the back for sourcing great gifts for loved ones, then go one better by picking something extra special from KIMSU for yourself. You’re worth it and for the uninitiated, this rising, Berlin based jewellery brand specialises in the kind of sophisticated and environmentally respectable styles that are catching the eye of industry insiders. Think abstract geometric forms in recycled silver and an exclusive shade of gold that are handcrafted into the kind of earrings, necklaces and rings that will make any outfit compliment-worthy. Not to mention the dynamic architectural air they exude, and the fact that founders Sue Woo Kim and Roberto Bertinetti have specifically designed these pieces to empower the wearer by imitating strong symbols of strength.

Whether you like your jewellery clean and simple or accented with premium gemstones, there’s a perfect style for you. Your search for impactful everyday earrings is over thanks to the Triangolo studs. Brigitte Bardot was sexy and elegant in equal parts. She was known, of course, for that sleek cat-eye - I wonder if she ever struggled to get those flicks even. And that hair. I'm sure Brigitte never struggled to get that perfect bouffant. Her hair always looked totally effortless. Pinned up or left to flail, Brigitte had the most chic hair and who wouldn't want to bring that back? Image: Getty

Kelly Rowland is looking so good in this photo. Her hair is a perfect lioness mane, her eyes are shining like a disco ball and her skin is glowing like the sun. To complete the look, the vibrant green dress with the purple flower is giving me mother earth goddess vibes. Who else is obsessed with this look? Fashion Week, of course, isn't just about the clothes but what the designers are styling them with. Jewellery has such an effect on an outfit, transforming that LBD from 9-5 to cocktail hour in a hot second. Tom Ford is known for being sleek and chic with just a bit of drama, that's what keeps it fun right? Kaia looked insane in this look in the recent Tom Ford show. These earrings are more than statement, they're over-statement and I love it. The simple smoky eye and nude lip work perfectly with the glam jewellery and obviously her hair is pulled back, not a focal point needed in this look. Incredible. Image: Vogue

It all started with the return of the scrunchie. Only a few years ago we started pulling out our lacklustre hair bands to tie in the scrunchie (we all had the velvet #UrbanOutfitters one right?). And now the revival of hair-wear has found its second accessory - the hair slide. I know what you're thinking, those bright, tinny things we wore in the nineties? No. These are more grown up. The likes of Bottega Veneta are designing subtle but sparkly hair slides which are making it to the catwalk. What do you think? Can the hair slide really grow up! Image: Vogue

Kim Kardashian is still rocking her platinum hair for the cover of Vogue Taiwan. And I really like how the vibe of her entire look is all neutral, including her stunning makeup made of nude and brown shades. I think it's the first time I see Kim with only false eyelashes on the outer corners of her eyes, and it looks really pretty. What're your thoughts on the look?
