Black and white is the perfect combination. Why? It's a great look for a formal event, or a date, or a meeting as well. Photo credit @fashion.voyage on #instagram #ootd #fashion #womenslook #outfit #dailylook #stylish #blackandwhite

A super cool version, the asymmetrical designs contrast very well with more polished or formal garments and also lengthen your legs! Credits: Pinterest

Every woman should have the so called ‘lady dress’ in their wardrobe. You never know when you have to go to a formal event and to avoid a wardrobe failure, the lady dress should always be there. Channel your inner princess and stock up on some lady dresses. Even though you probably won’t be having tea parties with the queen, this style is definitely a saviour! #ladydress #dress #style #party #event #streetstyle #fashion

Amal looks like a fairy when she wears pastel colors. George Clooney’s wife has turned out to be a real style icon and not only for the formal stylish suits she wears as a lawyer. Well done! #pinkdress #amalclooney

I never used to be a trainers kind of girl. I would take a heel over a flat any day. But recently I am becoming more and more drawn to trainers and I'm loving mixing them with more structured and formal pieces. I can't totally decide when it comes to this Adidas pair. I feel like I shouldn't like them but I cannot stop staring. The pink of course is a total win for me but I also quite like the netting covering them. I think these could look great with jeans or a simple white or pink summer dress. Image: ASOS

When we talk about clutches, we immediately imagine a small and elegant envelope that is combined with a somewhat formal one. However, these last few days we have seen street style appear, some large handbags combined with a casual dress.Credits: Pinterest

This is such a cool look from fashion blogger, Zoe London! I adore her style most days, but this look is one of my favourites for a while. It combines casual and formal wear perfectly! #ootd #zoelondon #alternative #fashion #blogger #missguided #cliopepplatt #nastygal Photo Credit: @zoelondondj on Twitter

You have surely spotted the trend that dominated Autumn/ Winter season, but now, check coats and blazers are moving well into Spring season. Having replaced the omnipresent denim as the most wearable spring outerwear, heritage checks can be worn in many versions.

Go for check skirts, tops, two-piece suits, trousers even blanket scarves. Another alluring edition that emerged straight from Paris Fashion week street style was the vinyl check trench coat. Offered in a wide variety of colour combinations, from classic to the rainbow pattern, the vinyl touch gives check a significant 2018 update.

The heritage check craze started not with Burberry but with Demna Gvasalia's SS17 collection for Balenciaga after he presented deconstructed and XXL proportions in blazers coats and skirts. The next season, check evolved in a number of AW17 catwalks Mulberry and Burberry went for classic heritage aesthetic while on the streets, Bella Hadid wore a cropped and deconstructed version.

The great thing about this trend is that you incorporate it as you please, without necessarily donning a formal Prince of Wales look. For a simple daytime look, wear your favourite check trench over a white rollneck with plenty of monochrome and a wide-legged jean for that seventies appeal. Add the polished vinyl edition for a statement look.

As temperatures rise it might be time to get that check blazer out of storage and sport it for Spring. Even though it has fallen in and out of fashion over time, from a work-suit in the 90's to the punk era of the 80's, this season, check blazers are the perfect addition to your springtime attire over slogan tees, jeans, frilly dresses and anything that might be hanging in your wardrobe.

Head to our gallery for more inspiration and shop your favourite check coats and blazers from our expert edit below!

I adore this formal look from Rita Ora. She wore this outfit at the Global Awards this year and she looked sensational! Such an interesting take on the standard blazer/trench coat shape. #ootd #ritaora #fashion #luxuryfashion #jeanpaulgaultier Photo Credit: @JPGaultier on Twitter

This second PFW look is probably more of what I imagine everyone is Paris to roam the streets clad in. My favourite part of the outfit, unsurprisingly, is the silver loafers. Comfy but chic, the best way to run around fashion week. The trousers pull together a more formal look but the coat could be worn for an everyday look. The coat falls loosely, a perfect 'I just threw this on' statement and because of the pattern it is just that, a statement. Image: Jonathan Daniel Pryce

Picking up where the Golden Globes left off with another black dress Time’s Up protest on the red carpet, actresses attending last night’s BAFTAs turned to statement jewellery to really set their looks off. More specifically earrings that glinted and sparkled under the glare of camera flashes and the eyes of the world. Diamonds were understandably popular- they are a girl’s best friend after all and if you can’t wear them on the red carpet, where else can you show them off with security nearby just in case? Angelina Jolie’s chandelier earrings were a departure from her usual understated style but they pushed her dress and classic make-up into dazzling territory.

A pop of green via gorgeous emerald stone settings were an unexpected alternative. Lead by the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge who wore a matching earrings and necklace set, Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton and more put green jewellery back in the spotlight, a move Jennifer Lawerence cemented when she presented the first award of the night ‘Outstanding British Film’. We also saw great examples of chain link and dramatic black tassel earrings we’re itching to try out too.

To really hammer home their message of action and solidarity with women facing injustice and sexual harassment, actresses like Jolie and Naomie Harris brought female activists along as their dates. And Best Actress winner Frances McDormand utterly stole the show (no mean fest with Joanna Lumley as host) dead-panning her witty acceptance speech; and she pledged her support for her 'sisters in black', despite not completely complying with the dress code.

Shop the key earrings styles we saw in our edits below for your next formal event.
