By now you've probably noticed the beauty trend dominating Pinterest and Instagram. Your cheat sheet to achieving that dewy, radiant skin all year long without much makeup is a highlighter that complements your skin tone and is becoming a beauty staple essential as blush of eyeliner.

How to choose the best highlighter for your skin tone...

Fair skin tones

For those with a light to pale complexion, it's best to opt for highlighters with a pearlescent gloss. The light pigments add enough radiance to your skin tone without washing you out. Stay away from shades that are too warm or too dark to avoid a heavy faux look.

Medium skin tones

If you want to wake up your skin opt for a highlighter with peach or gold undertones. This slight hint of colour is perfect for achieving a very natural sun-kissed glow. Add a bronze or gold eyeshadow and a nude lip to instantly look like a summer goddess.

Dark skin tones

For those with a darker skin colour go for a rich variation of rose gold or bronze. Make sure to opt for make up options that pack in lots of pigment and stay away from opalescent hues that might make the skin look grey. Mix your highlighter with your foundation to give an all over summer glow and apply a vibrant red lip for a show-stopping look.

Cannes Film Festival is all about unapologetic glam; from the designer gowns to the A-list guests, as well as the impressive array of expensive jewellery on the famous guests, Cannes is definitely the place to go for over the top Great Gatsby-inspired feels. Oh, and to watch movies, of course.

There were a few guests that took the pared-down route: Penelope Cruz wowed with a natural look, a nude lip and subtle smokey eyes with well-defined brows. While Julianne Moore kept things casual by pairing her flawless complexion and natural makeup with a twisted topknot.

President of the jury Kate Blanchett also kept things simple and effective with a shimmering lip lacquer, a hint of winged eyeliner and a dab of creamy pink blusher.

When it came to hairstyles, bombshell waves were the order of the day for jury member and French actress Lea Seydoux at the screening of Todos los Saben, emphasized with a hint of metallic eyeshadow. The Festival's Feature Film jury member Kristen Stewart made a memorable appearance with an elaborate updo finished with a cool-girl quiff.

Love this makeup of Carli Bybel! This look reminds me of a beautiful sunset. Those warm tones on the crease, with the aqua eyeshadow on the lid and the navy blue eyeliner on the lower lash line, makes a stunning colorful but wearable makeup.  Photo Credit: @carlibybel on Twitter #beauty #makeup #look #carlibybel

Whether you're a fan or not unicorn makeup is having a serious moment. Long associated with music festival culture it describes anything pastel or holographic applied with some elementary school enthusiasm. The key theme here is fantasy and creativity and the freedom to interpret it as you wish. Today we have one more reason to sport this uncanny makeup as it's National Unicorn Day which is celebrated in the US and the UK, so it's the perfect day to get out the glitter and immerse in anything rainbow.

Many brands and beauty companies are taking their piece of the pie by releasing countless unicorn products from brushes to palettes and colours. If you simply search Unicorn Beauty you'll come across a series of iridescent, and fantasy-inspired goodies.

UNICORN MAKEUP TUTORIAL

Everything starts with a great blank canvas, so begin by applying a base to smooth and clear your complexion. Next, take that concealer to cover dark circles and treat blemishes. Use your fingers so it's absorbed better from the skin. Now it's time to throw on some shades. Don't be colour shy. Using a blue pencil apply it to the back of your hand and transfer to the corner of your eye towards the middle of your lid. To set it, go over each colour with the same shade of powder with a fluffy blush.

Take an iridescent shadow to draw along the inner corner using an eyeliner brush. Now take a pink eyeliner pencil and draw along the bottom waterline. Define your eyes with a swipe of black mascara on top lashes and use a bold blue for your bottom lashes. Now that you're done with your eye makeup put it all together with a candy pink lipstick that works well with most complexions and also with whichever hue you may choose for your eyes.

Lily-Rose Depp could probably wear anything to the Met Gala. She always looks pretty Ina totally relaxed 'I don't need to try way'. I love that here her hair is pulled back loosely and she has thick back eyeliner on - easy yet elegant. This Chanel dress is absolutely stunning. Lily-Rose looks divine in this pink and I love the design with a flower creeping over her shoulder. There's something about it that is almost a little prom - the simple shape and deep pink. I love it. Image: Vogue.com

Another make up look that I have touched upon before is the blocked colour eyeshadow trend. This was recently spotted at the likes of Marni and Prada shows. Dior even matched their red, yellow and pink sunglasses to their eyeliner of choice. I love eyeshadows and my Morphe palette has been my best make up friend for months now. I am always experimenting with colours so it's great to see this manifest on the catwalk. Even better it's been kept really simple. All you need to do is swatch a colour across your lid et voila. An easy make up look that's also really fun. Image: Indigital

I'm loving this makeup look. From the romantic glowy cheeks to the mauve lip and the star of the show, the eye makeup. What a creative way to mix a cut crease technique with a colourful eyeliner, and still make them fit the romantic vibe of the overall look. photo credit: @sandyhirale on twitter #beauty #makeup #cutcrease #look

Fashion Week is so much more than style. During fashion week we get an inside look at the hair and makeup trends that we'll be sporting all next season. On a few lucky occasions like this years’ New York Fashion Week, it also reflects a shift in society on the very definition of beauty. This NYFW was bursting with a sense of change that was embracing activism, and celebrities that were more disrupting than your average celeb bunch.

From the breast cancer survivor Erica Hart, who walked at the Chromat show in a slip dress that was gracefully showing off her scars to the ten-year-old drag kid Desmond Napoles, who walked proudly at Gypsy Sport. To accommodate to this celebration of inclusivity and uniqueness, makeup and hairstyles were extravagant, rebellious and bold.

EYE FOCUS

The focus currently has shifted towards eye makeup featuring over the top looks such as black lashes and plastic bug eyes á la Gareth Pugh. There was gold glitter at Ulla Johnson and smoky eyes at Tom Ford or Alice + Olivia who traded the liquid eyeliner for a smudgy eye pencil. The eyeshadows surrendered to a rainbow effect with graphic edges in shimmering colours of pinks and purples. While Kate Spade opted for diamonds carefully glued on the models’ eyelids.

SUBVERSIVE HAIRDOS

When it comes to hair, the trend was all about spray products using all the essentials to create a  wet look. The accessories were over the top featuring 80’s leather headbands, throwback claw clips and irreverent updos put together with an army of hair gel.

BOLD LIPS

Whether it's two-tone pink and red lipstick, a healthy glow so extreme you're basically applying moon dust to your skin, red was a constant. The classic crimson lip became a powerful pout painted in a carefree fashion of individuality, whether it was in liquid form at Chromat or matte at Bottega Veneta.

HAIR DYE

Objecting to the single hair colour trend of seasons past, bold as they may have been, this time it was all about strategically placed streaks. The models at Sies Marjan wore pinks and blues while green and blonde short dos was also a trend at Marc Jacobs. Which of the makeup trends will you be trying this season? Take a moment to appreciate the best beauty looks of New York Fashion Week AW18 with us. Because Fashion Month is so much more than just clothes and this was our first chance to check out the hair and makeup trends we'll soon be sporting next season. As with the collections and shows themselves, which celebrated rebelliousness, inclusivity and uniqueness, the shift in society regarding the definition of beauty was reflected boldly and extravagantly.

Here are four of our favourites!

EYE FOCUS

It seems more is more again by the extravagant eye makeup choices on the NYFW catwalks. Ulla Johnson’s models have their eyelids dusted with gold glitter, while Tom Ford presented his own take on sexy smoky eyes, and Alice + Olivia traded liquid eyeliner for smudgy eye pencil. The eyeshadows surrendered to a rainbow effect with graphic edges in shimmering colours of pinks and purples at Oscar de la Renta and Anna Sui. We can’t wait to DIY Kate Spade’s eye makeup: sparkling diamonds carefully glued onto eyelids.

SUBVERSIVE HAIRDOS

The main trend was wet look hair, created by sprays that worked on every texture as seen on the Row catwalk by hairstylist Eugene Souleiman. The accessories were pretty maximalist: with 80’s leather headbands, throwback claw clips and irreverent gelled updos among the best of the bunch.

BOLD LIPS

Red was a colour constant, even when paired with pink for two tone lips. And it was masterfully set off with a healthy glow so extreme it will look like you applied moon dust to your skin. This classic crimson became a powerful pout, although painted in a carefree fashion, in liquid form at Chromat and matte at Bottega Veneta.

HAIR  DYE

Swap the single hair colour of seasons past, as bold as it is, for strategically placed streaks. The models at Sies Marjan wore pinks and blues, while green and blonde short dos made an appearance at Marc Jacobs. Which of the makeup trends will you be trying this season?
