So part of resolution month is not only deciding to give up on a bad habit, toxic people, change careers or simply hit the gym. Sometimes you want to start with the simple things that will give you an instant mood lift. So what's a better way to welcome the New Year than by updating your surroundings? We have rounded up the best hacks you can use this year to make your home a wonderful living space.

LIGHTING

We don't say this enough but you may be surprised at what a little lighting can do to set the mood. Opt for a big chandelier-like lighting at the centre of a big room and use small decorative pieces to give a bit of character to a cute corner on top of your bookshelf or your reading table for example.

BEDDING

A good night's sleep will make a huge difference to your lifestyle, so why not invest in a quality bed and mattress to pursue it. This year it's all about being grounded so the trend is to go for a low bed frame that is closer to the floor - in line with a down-to-earth attitude to get you through the New Year.

BATHROOM

If you want to truly give your bathroom a makeover you can do it simply by changing the little things such a the shower curtain, the towels, a nice frame and the glass where you keep your toothbrush. This year go for the bold and sophisticated ultra violet colour which is the Pantone colour of the year - that will match amazingly with any bathroom decor.

DINING

In the name of affordable makeovers, we suggest that you go for affordable china, glasses and placemats in order to give character to your dining table. You don't have to go all out on a new dining table when you can update it by throwing a great tablecloth over it. While you're in the dining room why not invest in a pair of cool speakers and truly set the mood.

With Christmas fast approaching we want to make sure we completely immerse in pure holiday spirit. That admittedly means more than your typical Christmas decorations! This season is after all about coming together, about community, sharing, and spending quality time with family and friends. It's also a great time for a guest room makeover. Especially when leaving abroad this is the time when family tends to visit and it's almost definite that you'd like to impress them.

This year we suggest you take the time to truly invest strategically in a few purchases that will make your home instantly Christmas guest ready!

One of the most common pre-holiday purchases are the dining sets and holiday-specific china that will make your hard-prepped meals  look even more delicious.

Invest in lighting. Think of a 'wow' lighting piece such as a #ff0000">chandelier or a #ff0000">floor lamp that can easily give character and ambiance to your flat but is also very practical.

If you don't already own a guest bed you should invest in a proper #ff0000">sofa bed that can accommodate all of your guests.

Finally, if you don't have the budget to invest in expensive items than it's worthwhile splurging on a few decorative pieces such as #ff0000">plates, flatware and #ff0000">glassware. Go the extra mile and add an impressive center piece and stylish placemats! Voila! Your Christmas home makeover is done.

Last night it was revealed that the sartorial queen Rihanna will be hosting next years Met Gala spectacular alongside human rights lawyer Amal Clooney. The duo will be working with Donatella Versace to welcome the guests of the annual fashion meets art extravaganza.

Last year's Gala was hosted by Katy Perry and Pharell Willams. It came as no surprise that Rihanna would be one of the hostesses as she has been a longstanding attendant of the Gala and her outfits are one of a kind show stoppers that are broadcasted across the globe for years to come. She truly emerged in the Comme Des Garçons outfit during the 2017 Gala.

The Met Gala has provided us with a very innovative array of themes. 2016 was Manus x Machina, while 2015's Through the Looking Glass was a nod to China and 2013 was a celebration of Punk. Well, the 2018 theme has been revealed as Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

According to Vogue, the curator of the fashion exhibit Andrew Bolton will display how Christianity has aided the Catholic imagination. So we predict precious jewelled robes, gowns, over the top head pieces, crosses and a lot of Dolce Gabbana.

32-year-old pop singer Katy Perry and 39-year-old actor Orlando Bloom have called it quits, according to sources close to the couple. After dating for about a year, the pair have decided to go separate ways.

It seems amicable so far, with neither party admitting who had initiated the breakup. Different sources had different stories to tell though: one friend confided to InTouch Weekly that "Not long after Halloween, Orlando confessed to pals that he'd decided to end their relationship. He claimed that he's just not ready to get married and have babies." However, he was previously married to Miranda Kerr, and has a 5-year-old with her. However, another friend has also come forward with a different explanation: "She said they were on different life paths and as much as she likes him, it's time to move on."

It seems like while the two were not on the same page romantically, they were on the same page with what was wrong with their relationship. If they both wanted different things, it seems like a mutual breakup - or at least as mutual as a breakup can be. Katy will be relieved to ditch the traffic and not commute to Orlando's house any longer. "My boyfriend lives in Malibu and getting used to that [drive] was, like, 'Are you kidding me? What kind of life is this? There's no pop-over and I never really got used to Malibu 'cause it's halfway to Santa Barbara, so I'm always just going to Santa Barbara then. I get the whole coming to L.A. and living by the beach thing. But it's really … it's so far, nobody is going to come see you." Orlando reportedly missed Katy's 32nd birthday, since he was on set in China filming his new movie.

A source claimed that "Orlando buried Katy in flowers on her birthday and felt horrible he could not be there for her birthday." Well, you can't blame Katy for cooling on somebody who didn't even see her on her birthday! Besides that, Orlando has been publicly being a creep.

Although he and Katy were not technically official yet in October '15, they had attended a Met Gala after-party together the week before he was openly flirted with several other women, including very young women. "I don't know Kendall Jenner, but if anyone has her number I would love it," he told the crowd while accepting an award for his UNICEF work, about 19-year-old Kendall. Orlando was 38.

Besides prowling for Kendall, he was also spotted drunkenly cuddling with 23-year-old Selena Gomez in a club. Hmmm ... it looks like Katy may have dodged a bullet on this one!

Rod Liddle wrote an article for The Sun this week criticising Emma Watson's position as a United Nations ambassador. It was sexist, condescending, belittling and just absolute codswallop.

Liddle stated that "instead of telling them all the rules of quidditch or how to turn someone into a frog, she bored them all rigid with whining, leftie, PC crap". Continuing to say "Just like all actresses do if people are stupid enough to give them the chance. Why do we indulge these luvvie slebs, most of whom know nowt?". So, basically, he's saying that an actress isn't allowed to also have educated and political opinions, or a voice as an advocate? That the characters she plays on film are what Emma Watson should be limited to. Let's just reevaluate this, shall we?

Emma Watson is a Brown University graduate, has been involved in the promotion of girls' education for several years and has visited Bangladesh and Zambia as part of her humanitarian work. She has been an ambassador for Camped International, and has also been a UN Women Goodwill ambassador for more than two years. Does this sound like a woman who "knows nowt"?.

Note, Liddle uses the word "actresses" rather than "actors", inferring that he deems male actors worthy to speak on political issues, but not female. He also states that "I suppose they got Emma in because Angelina Jolie is a bit tied up with other stuff at the moment". This is ridiculously sexist and derogatory, it firsts infers that Emma Watson is a second choice but also that Angelina Jolie is not capable of fulfilling her advocacy work because of familial problems. Can you imagine him speaking about a man in such a way? No, you can't. Because he wouldn't.

It would be giving The Sun too much credit to be shocked that they'd print such an article, because let's be honest, this is exactly the kind of opinion The Sun and its readers promote. A Sun spokesperson commented "Rod Liddle was echoing a great many people in sharing his exasperation at celebrities that feel they can lecture us mere mortals". It seems that The Sun is also of the assumption that celebrities cannot be both successful entertainers and intelligent.

Personally, I believe it is brilliant when celebrities use their position to speak on important issues, especially for women because our voices are so often marginalised. Maybe, because Liddle is an upperclass, white, male he hasn't ever had a problem with having his voice and opinion heard, and therefore doesn't understand why women need an ambassador in the public eye to be heard. But what do I know? I'm sure he'd see me as a whining, leftie spurting PC crap that I know nowt about....

+ watch Emma Watson's speech above and decide for yourself if she "knows nowt".

The Rio Olympic Games have been, as customary for the event, exciting and controversial. Currently the USA are in the lead, with Britain following in second and China third. We look at the game's highlights thus far! Watch the inspirational moments in the gallery above...

1.
Simone Biles, US gymnast and all round badass. So far she has won 3 golds, and one bronze. Her reaction to the bronze was epic- "1st Olympics- 4th olympic medal (3 gold & 1 bronze) y'all aight out there? bc I'm more than happy. Floor finals tomorrow, so excited". You tell em' girl.

2.
Dipa Karmakar, didn't win a medal but did win the world's heart. As the first Indian woman to compete in the gymnastics her breathtaking performance was groundbreaking, plus she finished 4th which for her first Olympics is pretty amazing!

3.
Michael Phelps, 28 medals, 23 of them gold. Not much more to say on this, apart from we are 90% sure he's part fish.

4. Katie Ledecky: Four golds, one silver, two world records with victories by unheard-of margins of 4.77 and 11.38 seconds. Now, that's an Olympic games to remember.

5.
Katrina Hozzu has won 3 Olympic golds in 4 days, smashed an Olympic record of two mins 6.58 seconds in the 200m individual medley. Despite the controversy that has surrounded her over the press making sexist remarks by congratulating her husband/coach before recognising her accomplishments, she's had a brilliant game.

6.
Shaunae Miller, the Bahamian sprinter who controversially won gold in the women's 200m by diving to the finish. Apparently it's a legal tactic, so kudos to her...

7.
Usian Bolt won the 100m final which wasn't really a surprise. What was a surprise was him smiling at the cameras, while the other runners looked exhausted. Funniest photo ever.

8.
Mo Farah, a GB national hero, fell with 16 laps to go in the 10, 000m but he recovered and won gold. Go Mo!

9.
Wayde Van Niekerk broke the 400m world record, beating Usain Bolt. This fella is definitely one to watch!

10.
Adam Peaty won gold in the 100m breastroke, not bad for someone who was afraid of the water as a child.

...In embarrassing America.

Whether you’re a Trump supporter or not, you can’t deny it’s preferable to have a presidential candidate who doesn’t sh*t all over women, ethnic minorities, the LGBT community and pretty much anyone that isn’t themselves.

No candidate is squeaky clean but surely this guy can’t be the lesser evil?

Read on for 10 times Donald Trump opened his mouth and exceeded expectations in embarrassing America on an international scale:

1) “I will build a great wall - an nobody builds a wall better than me, believe me - and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”

2) "When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best. They’re not sending you, they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs They’re bring [sic] crime. They’re rapists…And some, I assume are good people.”

3) “Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!”

4) But don’t worry, it’s not just Mexico Donald likes to offend: “We can’t continue to allow China to rape our country.”

5) In a statement released by Trump’s campaign in December after the mass shooting in San Bernardino, CA.: "Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on."

6) “I was down there, and I watched our police and our firemen, down on 7-eleven, down at the World Trade Center, right after it came down."

7) He may have backtracked on this but the damage has been done. This is what Trump thought/thinks about women who seek abortions: “There has to be some form of punishment.”

8) Trump said about his anti-Muslim policy in the final Republican debate last year, “They’re not coming to this country if I’m president. And if Obama has brought some to this country they are leaving, they’re going, they’re gone."

9) On gay marriage: “I just don’t feel good about it. I don’t feel right about it. I’m against it…I’m opposed to gay marriage."

10) This is just downright weird: “I’ve said if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d been dating her."

It’s arguably the biggest decision you will make this lifetime- should Britain remain in the EU or go it alone.

If you’re anything like me, with just under a week to go you will be thoroughly confused given the shameless point scoring and confusing statements made from both sides of the camp so far.

In one corner you have the 'Remain' campaign lead by the Prime Minister and Chancellor urging (or should that be scaremongering?) us to stick with the EU, or face uncertain times ahead. Peppering the word ‘recession’ into their carefully planned speeches and impassioned pleas have certainly taken effect from what I can see.

We have suffered five years of austerity and cuts in a bid to cut the deficit and now we’re faced with the possibility of being plunged into chaos once more? It’s enough to make anyone panic and not actually consider what issues will affect them day-to-day.

There are faceless, unelected members of the EU making decisions on our behalf daily and yet prior to this referendum went largely unnoticed or challenged. Of course, now we are in the midst of this debate it doesn’t help that both sides keep playing down/exaggerating exactly how much of British law is decided in Brussels.

‘Remain’ peg it at 7% whilst ‘Leave’ calculates it is 75%, so who do we believe with such a monumental discrepancy between their figures? Herein lies the problem.

Amongst the ‘emergency budget’ threats, there is a stark truth about the uncertainty we face on June 24th should we opt to leave. How can we continue as normal when there would be a monumental amount to renegotiate when it came to trade deals, immigration and the like?

Even looking closer to home, would the uncertainty prevent people from getting on the housing ladders and in turn would banks become overly cautious and restrict lending? The repercussions felt through Europe would undoubtedly unsettle the market, which team ‘Remain’ continues to use as its core argument.

No one likes change, but change, which we can’t predict or foresee, is even scarier. Are we ready to stand alone and take the bad with the good? It’s this argument, which powers the other side of the debate.

In the 'Leave' camp you have Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson leading the charge. Whilst, Michael Gove, so loathed for his stint as Education Secretary, has become something of a secret weapon in the debating stakes. His recent Question Time appearance went down very well with the audience, despite some very sticky moments.

This trio maintain that Britain is stronger alone- that we are a great British Empire, capable of leading our own destiny and taking back control from Europe, which will strike a chord with many and their Patriotism. ‘Leave’ paint a picture of more funding for the NHS, trade deals with China and controlled immigration- issues people feel very passionate about.

Where they come unstuck in their argument is answering the million-dollar question; what will be the consequences if we leave? They continuously dodge this question, either because they don’t know the answer or because they know there are risks, but don’t want to publicly admit that in case it derails the whole campaign.

They have been very successful in brandishing the disputed huge sums of money we send to the EU each week.

On some levels it’s very hard to argue with this, which is what the 'Leave' campaign is using to its advantage- they believe this money would be better put to use funding Britain. It is undeniably a huge amount when you examine our underfunded National Health Service and transport networks and that’s before we look into the shortage of housing and school places, which leads their argument neatly onto the hotly debated topic of immigration.

‘Leave’ consider the current system in place as “expensive and out of date” with an open door policy causing a strain on our services. What they propose is controlling this immigration more closely and opening up our borders to non-EU members who could be more valuable to our economy.

They have tried to quell the panic and fear from current EU migrants settled here with a ‘no mass deportation’ rhetoric, which from where I am sat (in an office full of all nationalities) does little to soothe their concerns.

In truth, both make compelling arguments, but sorting through what is actually fabrication and fact does wear thin day in day out. Whichever way you choose to vote on June 23rd, make it for the reasons that will have an impact for you. Voting with your head is a given, voting with your heart is altogether a different matter.

Scroll through our gallery above to watch the key debates so far and let us know how you feel about the impending decision.
