Flicking through The Sunday Times with brunch is one of our favourite weekend rituals and it’s also how we discovered the incredibly well-dressed Jane McFarland. For the uninitiated, she is Fashion Director at the newspaper and The Sunday Times Style magazine; but much more importantly the latter’s Wardrobe Mistress, taking over from another ultra-stylish blonde Pandora Sykes. Every week she answers readers’ wardrobe woes in an unmissable feature illustrated by stunning shots of McFarland putting aforementioned pieces and trends through their paces. Only on instagram do you get a full reflection on her impeccable personal taste, which is a masterclass in modern minimalism tempered by intriguing accessories and jewellery. Think cosy but clean coats and knits, streamlining suits and trousers and lux loafers; while her takes on the #evachenpose are reoccurring lift selfies holding beautiful flower bouquets.

What McFarland’s feed is is a breath of fresh air in our Gucci-powered era of maximalism. Rather than steering clear of pattern and sequins, she’s pretty restrained in the ways she wears them- even if she’s wearing it head-to-toe so there isn’t too much going on. Her editor’s eye comes into it’s own with her structured bags and unexpected earrings - Celine and Simon Miller make appearances - and to keep things extra interesting: she breaks up the outfit shots with pictures of art and cool pop culture references. She’s definitely one to watch as she’s experimental with fashion in her own understated way.

We're excited to see what the fashion editor wears next, along with sneak peaks from her Wardrobe Mistress shoots. In the meantime, shop our edit below to recreate some of McFarland’s recent looks.

Paris Fashion Week has seen all of the fabulous bags, but of course, Chanel is always queen in Paris. This bag absolutely takes it home (I would like to take it home please). Tassels are completely on trend this year and naturally Chanel takes this and makes it, well, Chanel. I can just imagine the diamanté glistening, teasing the Parisienne afternoon sun (did I mention I want one?). Image: Getty/Chanel

We're all familiar with that pre-Christmas gifting feeling. We start making lists by artfully extracting information on what our loved ones would like for Christmas. With the same intention we give out information about ourselves. It's all part of the beautiful game of gifting, sharing and ultimately spending time with our favourite people.

For our mothers, sisters and best friends, COACH has a lovely selection of beautifully crafted bags, clutches, cross body bags and other intricately designed accessories that are both bold fun yet classic and chic. Go for a personal charm, a key chain, a gold bangle or a dazzling necklace.

For the men in our lives there's a wide selection of luxe leather items. Go for a practical and sleek leather jacket in a plain monochrome hue or in a bold pattern. Opt for a leather bag or business briefcase and add a personalised tag for the ultimate gifting experience. If you're looking more for a budget solution, choose winter accessories such as leather gloves and a scarf or seasonless winners like a personalised leather wallet or card holder.

Did we mention that many gift items are on sale? Shop your favourite styles below. Hurry sale ends soon.

‘Life in plastic, it’s fantastic” sang Aqua in the Nineties hit ‘Barbie Girl’ but we’d definitely disagree now that some horrifying evidence and stats have come to more prominent light. A recent Refinery 29 article revealed that plastic takes at least 450 years to break down after reaching the sea: even if it’s ground down into tiny pieces. That means ecosystems are affected as wildlife eat and/or get stuck in it and the food chain too because fish and salt can contain plastic traces as well. Just let that sink in for a moment and consider the fact that almost everything is packaged in or made more durable using plastic- food, beauty products, clothes… You can’t say the environmentalists didn’t warn us.

If you’re wondering how you can reduce your plastic consumption, you’re already doing it. The 5p charge for plastic bags in the UK that you probably curse when you forget your canvas bag at home has already seen a 83% drop in usage since 2015. And plastic microbeads formerly found in cosmetics are banned. Iceland became the world's first supermarket to ban plastic packaging this week. Next up is a possible ‘latte levy’: a 25p charge on single use coffee cups which are apparently plastic-lined and therefore not biodegradable. Pret’s offering a 50p discount if you bring your own cup for your morning hot beverage and other companies have followed suit. Don’t forget about plastic water bottles either, and soon the straw in your cocktail or milkshake will disappear or be paper instead of plastic as more business ban them.

To fight plastic pollution more proactively, we’ve rounded the best reusable cups, straws and bottles around right now in our edits below.

When you first get a foldable bag you’ll wonder how you ever functioned without it. They’ve become all the more essential now that it costs 5p per plastic bag in the shops so you’ll save that money and the environment in a single swoop. Brand and designers have cottoned on this unique fashion-meets-function opportunity to dole out bags to suit minimalists, maximalists and every sartorial personality in between. And you’d be surprised by how small some shrink, how big others expand and how it doesn’t really matter whether you fold, scrunch or roll them. Drop one in your bag and volia! You’re instantly more organised and have more space to shop or carry everything you need for the day.

Longchamp are probably the best known brand to make them thanks to Alexa Chung carrying their Le Pliage tote and collaborating with the French luxury leather goods brand on her own designs. You can follow her lead by creating a monochrome look with the bag as the statement piece or you can clash to your heart’s content. To be honest, there’s no right or wrong way to style a foldable bag - just pick your favourite shape/shade/pattern and use it at much as possible. And as they are so reasonably priced, why buy only one?

Being matchy matchy was a huge trend decades ago. Now it’s all about mismatching your accessories. Different patterns, different colours… It’s better to compliment the colours of your clothes rather than wearing the exact same textured shoe and bag. Use your outfit as your key, if you’re wearing a pink and green patterned dress, you can wear green shoes and a pink bag. Or wear a yellow bag to compliment the colours of the dress. It’s so much fun to mix and match colours, that you will be obsessed! #shoes #bags #accessories #trend #streetstyle #style #fashion

Letters everywhere: the star gift, wear your initial. The alphabet becomes the protagonist of small hoop earrings, pendants, hairpins or bags. Find the initial of your destiny, and you will be right.Credits: Pinterest

Skinny Dip are the place to go for anything to dress up your tech. I rarely think to go to them for anything else, however, I've been spotting some super cute bags that I wouldn't mind finishing my outfit with. I am super keen on pink. Super keen. So it is no surprise that I have fallen in love with this Skinny Dip piece. Cute as anything with one of my favourite colour clashes - pink and red - this is just perfect. Pantone's colour of the year is ultra violet and its hues will definitely be dominating the catwalks. These shades won't just be in our wardrobes but will also be making an appearance in our make up bags. This year is all about blending brights into your smoky eye look. My favourite brand for bolder shades is #Morphe. Their palettes are perfectly pigmented and amazing value. What are your favourite eyeshadow brands? Image: Elle.com

Many will say that the fashion world is crazy, others that do not know what to invent, and another large group will think that the strangest things at the end are the ones that work. A few weeks ago we presented a trend that promised to make noise, and the street shows us that it is: hairy bags have come to complement the Autumn-Winter looks and bring a different touch to the final styling. The question is, how to combine them? Credits: Pinterest
