In 1968 Sir Robin Knox-Johnston became the first man in history to sail non-stop single handed around the globe. He pledged that one day men and women from all walks of life with no prior sailing knowledge would be able to follow in his footsteps (well, in the wake of a yacht anyway) and the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race was born. Since the first sailors cast off on their voyage, 1800 men and women have competed in this unique race around the continents in some of the fastest yachts of their kind. Now you can experience what it's like to be part of the sailing team on one of these extraordinary 60 or 68 ft yachts, actively taking part and learning how to steer, handle sails and haul sheets. Location: Gosport, Hampshire Availability: Ome Saturday date per month from May to October, with both morning and afternoon sessions available. Weather: These yachts are built to withstand all weathers and the experience will only be cancelled in extreme weather conditions. Duration: Your experience lasts for four and a half hours. Please aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early to ensure a prompt start, as the yachts cannot wait for latecomers. Numbers On Day: There will be two crew members and up to 12 guests on board. Spectators: Friends and family are welcome to watch from the shore, but they won't be able to see much of the action. Gunwharf quay in Portsmouth has lots of harbourside shops and restaurants and is only a short ferry ride away. Dress Code: Dress comfortably and bring an extra sweater or fleece as it is colder at sea. Wear soft-soled, non-slip shoes, e.g. deck shoes or trainers (as your feet are likely to get wet). Lipbalm and sunblock are useful. Waterproof and lifejackets are provided. Guidelines: From the M27 take A32 Gosport for four miles, turn left at traffic lights by St George's Barracks into Weevil Lane. Park in Cooperage Green car park on the right, your skipper will meet you by the hexagonal building the Pump House cafe. By public transport take a taxi or bus from Fareham station or the Gosport passenger ferry you also need to take a taxi from Portsmouth Harbour Station to Weevil lane. See further directions on attached sheet. Restrictions: Min age 13. Under 18s must be accompanied by a participating adult. No previous sailing experience needed and non-swimmers welcome. A physically demanding experience which will leave you feeling elated but exhausted. Medical disclaimer must be signed. Other Info: The crew are highly professional and well aware of the hard work involved so don't worry - you will be well looked after.
