It's not uncommon for someone to wonder whether their workplace behaviour is questionable at times, or to be in need of a guide with which to compare the practices of that of their colleagues!
Keeping in mind that workplace etiquette can differ from industry to industry, there are general dos and don'ts that apply to every work environment...
Do: Wait patiently in line for the printer/coffee machine/restroom. No-one likes to be rushed when machinery and/or bodily functions are challenging enough to control as it is.
Don't: Complain loudly about slow wi-fi, broken air conditioning/heating, or the continuous blare of someone's car alarm for a prolonged period of time. Chances are, everyone around you will be experiencing the same frustrations so unless something can be done about it ASAP, either A) become part of the solution or B) STFU.
Do: Own up and apologise if you've made a mistake or did something wrong. Avoid being defensive and take constructive criticism with dignity, even if it's killing your pride or you have to hear it from someone you don't like in the slightest (like the office gossip who blabbed about your hangover to management last Wednesday).
Don't: Steal other people's stuff. This might sound like a given but no matter how well you get along with someone, don't assume it's okay to use up the last of their almond milk without asking. It's the little things in life that can really brighten someone's day and you never know how much an almond milk chai latte can help their workflow.
Do: Get mad inwardly. If someone's annoyed you or let you down, let it go but CHALK IT UP! It's not holding a grudge so much as getting on with it and keeping note of who and who hasn't been supportive, dependable, or willing to learn. This could come in handy in like, 50 years time when you've finally landed your dream role and need to surround yourself with the right people.
Don't: Be a suck up. People can see right through it and it's really, really embarrassing. Treat everyone with dignity and respect and not just the select few you wish to impress.
