One of the key milestones in a couple’s relationship is moving in together. Creating a home with someone else can be tricky if you both have distinctive but different tastes.
If you and your guy are moving into a new apartment, you’ll need to be ready to embrace some changes. Try to work together to create a style that works for the both of you, particularly in often-frequented areas such as the living room, kitchen and bedroom.
We’ve come up with a few tips to help you strike that perfect balance between your tastes and his.
Mix It Up
The first thing you’ll need to do is to figure out what you both like in terms of home decor. Once you’ve figure this out, find a way of incorporating both your tastes so you’re both happy with the result.
For each room, make sure there are at least two or three statement pieces for each of you, and then try to add small touches of each others’ tastes scattered throughout the room.
Love One Thing
For each room, try to find one major piece that you both love, and try to work everything else around that item. For the living room this might be a sofa, while for the bedroom it might be the bed or wardrobe, and for the kitchen it might be the cabinets or the stove.
If your colour scheme veers towards masculinity with navy or grey, add subtle feminine accents such as a pale pink floral print. Similarly, if your colour scheme has a lot of delicate pastel, create boldness with large stripes and geometric prints.
Blue is a popular masculine colour while florals are typically associated with femininity. Why not combine the two with a floral print on your navy or cerulean bed linens?
The opposite can also work - why not use pink stripes to embellish a white towel or black throw rug?
Whether or not you want to have pictures of the two of you displayed, art work can be a great way to bring personality and life into a home.
If one of you is more art-inclined that other, it can be tempting to let that person make all the art decisions. However, make sure there’s at least one photo picked by you and one photo picked by him so you both feel involved.
