The first new law obliges models to have a medical certificate establishing their physical well-being and proving that they are not excessively underweight. If this isn’t respected, the model's employer will be subject to a fine of €75,000 as well as six months in jail.
The second new regulation concerns ad campaigns. It ensures that all commercials that edit models' bodily appearances must contain the label “photographie retouchée” (i.e. retouched photograph), otherwise risking a €37,500 fine.
Many similar steps have been taken to make the fashion industry more diverse, but none of them have truly worked so we hope that the implementation of fines will make a difference. And, seeing that France is generally considered the home of fashion, we hope that many others will follow in its footsteps.
