Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt filed for divorce yesterday, and the internet broke. Although many were sad because they were seen as one of the strongest Hollywood couples, with their 6 children, humanitarian nature and marriage two years ago after a decade of being together. However, many decided to focus on someone else, who has nothing to do with the divorce- Jennifer Aniston.
Jennifer Aniston is loved and all our hearts broke for her when Brad Pitt cheated with Angelina Jolie on her. But people, that was years ago. Imagine if people continually brought up your ex of 12 years ago, and assumed you weren't over them and were still bitter? It'd piss you off right? Or stop you from moving on? Well now times that by millions of people chiming in, everyday asking you about it. Rachel Green GIFS flooded twitter, and ok they were funny, but inappropriate.
Angelina Jolie has been with Brad Pitt for a long time, they have 6 children together, and are probably deeply saddened that it hasn't worked out. The public will of course be interested in their divorce, because of their profile, but it should be about them, not Brad's ex. Angelina has not been "the other woman" since 2005. Jen has not been some scorned, bitter woman wishing for their demise. That does her a serious disservice, because what person would wish this upon anyone?
It's all so sexist, the way people are pitting Angelina and Jen against each other. While Brad is seemly not the main focus, of his own divorce, in the media. It's assuming that these women are fighting over him, that they're catty, d*ck obsessed and bitter. Jen is married herself, and even if she wasn't, she'd certainly still be over a relationship that ended 12 years ago. Angelina and Brad's divorce is about them, and more importantly, their children.
The media would never react this way if it were a woman in Brad's position. The woman would be getting all the slack, for not being a "good mother" for not being a "good wife". But nope, because of the patriarchal society we live in, the media prefers to focus on the women and portray them as bitchy.
A Youtuber, Stefan Molyneux
really made my blood boil. He tries to reason that the marriage probably didn't work out because Angelina has turned forty and her "high-sexual market value" has decreased. I don't even know where to start with this. Firstly, she is a beautiful woman who embraces her sexuality, but that is not what she's defined by or why she's successful. She's a brilliant actress, director, activist, humanitarian and a lecturer. No one has made comments on Brad ageing as the reason for their divorce- it really highlights how disgustingly sexist the society we live in is.
In this video, the most liked comment is "She cut off her boobs, nuff said". How sickening is that? That people think their divorce is down to her no longer having breasts, which FYI she removed because of her family history of breast cancer. It not only shows that people think a woman's worth comes from their body, but also disrespects Brad to assume that he is as shallow and sexist as the people commenting on Stefan Molyneux's video.
