Forever Female (dvd)
$19.99 $17.99
Forever Female (dvd)
Sir James Barrie's whimsical play Rosalind was updated and urbanized as the 1953 film Forever Female. Ginger Rogers plays a veteran Broadway star who has optioned a play written by William Holden. Though on the less sunny side of 40, Rogers expects to play the leading role, that of a 19 year old girl. Producer Paul Douglas-who also happens to be Rogers' husband-insists that Holden alter the age of the main character. Meanwhile, iron-willed ingenue Patricia Crowley, who is far more suited to the part than Rogers, begins her own campaign to win the role. Far more enjoyable than the plot mechanics of Forever Female are the sly showbiz inside jokes, courtesy of screenwriters Julius and Philip Epstein. It's also fun to tick off the familiar faces in the supporting cast, including George Reeves as a stuffy suitor, future Mrs. Bing Crosby Katherine Grant as an auditioning actress, and Gunsmoke and Dragnet villain Vic Perrin as an effeminate set designer~Hal Erickson

Captain America: Civil War (dvd)
In this superhero epic, the denizens of the Marvel Universe are forced to pick sides when Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) come to blows over ideological differences. After a mission involving a new Avengers squad led by Cap ends with several civilian casualties in Lagos, the team are asked to sign an agreement that would force them to take orders from a United Nations panel. Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) pressures Cap to accept this new arrangement, in part because he feels deeply guilty about his own past recklessness; Captain America, however, fears that the Avengers will only be corrupted by bureaucracy. Their disagreement eventually escalates into all-out war when Cap's old friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), now a brainwashed assassin known as the Winter Soldier, reenters the picture. Captain America: Civil War brings back former Avengers characters such as Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Vision (Paul Bettany); it also drags into the fray low-rent superhero Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and introduces both the powerful African prince Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and a new, younger incarnation of Spider-Man (Tom Holland). Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo~Jack Rodgers

Following his surprise-hit American remake of The Ring in 2002, director Gore Verbinski took on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the second of recent films to be based upon Disney theme-park rides (the first being The Country Bears). When Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the daughter of Governor Swann (Jonathan Pryce) is kidnapped by a group of pirates led by Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and taken aboard their ship, The Black Pearl, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), the young man who loves Elizabeth despite the fact that she is promised to another, sets out to rescue her. But he can't do it alone, so he enlists the help of swashbuckling ship captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). Together the two chase after The Black Pearl, but they soon discover that the captain and crew aren't your average pirates. Cursed to remain between the living and the dead, Barbossa and his men look like skeletons when basked in the moonlight. When it is revealed that the only thing that can break the curse is Elizabeth's blood, Jack and Will are faced with a race against time and a battle against the undead to save the Governor's daughter~Matthew Tobey

Full of familiar faces, obscure characters, and classic artwork, this book proves that a woman's place is definitely in the pages of a comic book - solving crimes (and occasionally committing them), saving the world (and occasionally threatening it), and generally being a total bada**...

Derby by Jamie Hawkesworth
Year: 2011 Edition: 292/1000 Condition: Very good Numbered newsprint edition of photographs by Jamie Hawkesworth, Adam Murray & Robert Parkinson (from the Preston is my Paris collective!) Made for Format Festival in Derby in 2011. The sister to the Preston Bus Station zine. Co-founded by Adam Murray and Robert Parkinson in June 2009, Preston is my Paris began as a photocopied zine focusing on the city of Preston but has since developed into a multi-faceted photographic archive consisting of self-published works, live events and digital applications that address themes relating to everyday life, underappreciated places, architecture, identity and the now. Preston Bus Station, by Adam Murray and Robert Parkinson with Jamie Hawkesworth and Aidan Turner-Bishop, provides a document of a weekend spent in arguably Preston's most iconic building. 'By focusing on the users of the building and small architectural details, we aimed to produce an alternative to previous projects which tend to focus on the overall architectural structure. The collaborative aspect in terms of photographic approach is reflected in the layout and combination of images. By appropriating the vernacular print format of newsprint we were able to produce a photographic publication that was both affordable and accessible to all audiences.'

Nude Kid Kills Parents by Kuohao Chung

Nude Kid Kills Parents by Kuohao Chung
Year: 2016 Edition: 6/30 Format: Softcover Condition: New "Nude Kid Kills Parents takes the viewer through a visual odyssey, one man's hopeless search for a matter of satisfaction or contentment. Dressing and undressing the body in symbols of restriction, Kuohao creates a constantly self-reflective visual identity. Juxtaposing relaxed materials with rigid ones, the viewer visualises a tactile experience within his dichotomous emotional turmoil. Once soft and malleable, his battered innocence cloaks itself in the sartorial narrative he so desparately wishes to escape. Kuohao artfully shifts the gaze onto both the male body and the auteur, challenging the viewer to engage with such externalised vulnerability contrasted against critical, almost forced, self-reflection." - fashion critic Jaimie Wylie

Just as with the book 'Amsterdam!', all original slides have been cleaned, scanned and meticulously edited using a new technique developed by the restoration studio of the Nederlands Fotomuseum. This reprint presents Van der Elsken's work in the best quality.

Publisher: Café Royal Books Year: 2016 Edition: 200 Format: Softcover - b/w digital Condition: New Limited edition photography book featuring Thierry Girard's images taken in Polar and hackney. Edited by Craig Atkinson. "I decided to stay in the East End where I used to live when I was a student, but I didn't intend to do a reportage about the East End or the Eastenders. I just wanted to walk for hours and days in the East End, seizing bits of life, passing through abandoned and ruined districts, pushing doors of working-class pubs, rambling through multi-coloured markets… At lunchtime or in the evening I would go to pubs where male and female strippers were performing. The people attending the shows, men and women, were just ordinary people. It was long before those strip shows were recommended as an East End trick in travel guides.

SPBH Book Club, Vol V by Esther Teichmann
Publisher: Self published, Be Happy Book Club Year: 2014 Edition: One of 500 Format: Hardcover Condition: New In Volume V of SPBH Book Club, Esther Teichmann presents a rarefied and ambiguous exploration of female pleasure. Backdrops and shells, sculptures and the sea, the imagined and the painted, the real and the staged - it all appears in Teichmann's chimerical paradise. By referencing classical representations of women in the history of art, most often in the hands of and for the consumption of men, Teichmann reclaims the traditional pictorialism of femininity in a subversive and provocative manner. All of the complex forms of womanhood and yearning emerge - the lover, the mother, self pleasure, sensuous pleasure and the women appear as characters, specters and statues as flesh turns to stone and back again. With a layered mix of photographs - some of which are collaged on the book pages - and an original, handprinted cyanotype on the front cover, the book is an object of tactility and longing.

Sunless by Tiane Doan Na Champassak
$70.00
Sunless by Tiane Doan Na Champassak
Publisher: Editions du LIC Year: 2015 Condition: New Format: Hardback Edition: First Limited edition of 500 copies In Sunless by Tiane Doan na Champassak, beauty is pursued across the disintegrating boundaries between male and female. The images in Sunless, taken in Thailand between 2012 and 2013, form the second part of a larger body of work-in-progress, born out of a persistent urge to photographically confront questions regarding gender and sexuality. Sunless highlights the different shades between what today's society accepts as male or female, and explores what is considered the norm in terms of gender and sexuality. Whilst homosexuality tends to be well represented in today's contemporary art scene, very little space is made for works that deal with bisexuality and transgenderism. Photographic works on these themes remain within a niche of militant art that rarely reaches a wider audience - as if confrontation with such work is too disturbing or even too threatening for individuals and society. Tiane Doan na Champassak's work is driven by a fascination with gender identity issues, revealing a decidedly aesthetic sensibility. For each body of work, whether gallery prints or limited edition books, he seeks out the most appropriate techniques, materials and formats. In Sunless, transgressive sexual encounters have been captured by the photographer on Ilfochrome film and interspersed with stark monochrome impressions of the urban architecture in which they are anchored. Consequently, Sunless pushes the limitations of offset printing to the limit by attempting to accurately reproduce Ilfochrome prints through the use of high pigmentation inks combined with silkscreen varnish, juxtaposed with large format matte-varnished duotone images.

Jens F. by Collier Schorr
$645.00
Jens F. by Collier Schorr
Publisher: MACK Year: 2005 Edition: 434/1000 First Edition Format: Hardcover Condition: New The Jens pictures began as an experiment. To photograph a young boy in many of the positions that Andrew Wyeth painted the model Helga; to give someone another identity and photograph them through the transformation. The work evolved into a kind of dance between the two models, between painting and photography, between the exacting detail of photography and all the nuances of sketches and drawings. As a way of keeping track of all these images, I began to clip out the contact prints I liked and to paste them into Wyeth's book The Helga Pictures. The Wyeth volume became something like a log or sketchbook, the antithesis of photography where the viewer sees only the finished and perfected photograph. Here they see hundreds of attempts. Each page compiles years worth of shots, the same picture taken again and again over time. The camera formats change; the boy's body changes, the light changes. Levels of intimacy change. The boy grows further away from the soft curves of femininity yet closer in his comfort and collaboration.

Faker Drinker Soldier Heiress by Clunie Reid

Faker Drinker Soldier Heiress by Clunie Reid
Publisher: Book Works Year: 2010 Format: Softcover Condition: New Drawing on imagery from advertising, the internet, magazines and her own drawings and photographs, Clunie Reid's photo-collages appropriate and violently represent the banality of everyday images. Drawing on the sexual content and rhetoric of advertising, and often reproduced on a mirrored surface with hand-scrawled jokes and texts overlaying them, the images play on the relationship between surface and penetration, where distorted images, words and text shatter the reflection of the mirrored surface. In this artists' book these illusionistic, sexual games are replayed across the blacked or mirrored surface of the pages. Using images, jokes, text, and drawings, the book becomes a hall of mirrors in which one meaning rapidly collapses in on itself only to reproduce a new multifaceted one.

Heart of Darkness by Fiona Banner
$30.00
Heart of Darkness by Fiona Banner
Publisher: Four Corners Books with The Vanity Press Year: 2015 Format: Softcover Condition: New In 2012, Fiona Banner was invited to create an exhibition of works drawn from the Archive of Modern Conflict, a London-based collection of photographs and ephemera relating to war and conflict. After much time delving into the archive, Banner observed a lack of images relating to conflict in the here and now. In a reversal of roles, Banner commissioned Paolo Pellegrin, a Magnum conflict photographer who has worked extensively in the Congo, to observe the City of London - its streets and trading floors, its costume and surrounding strip-clubs - through Conrad's Heart of Darkness. The resulting photographs were first exhibited at Peer, London under the title Mistah Kurtz - He Not Dead. A selection of these images now form part of the Archive, they can be found filed under 'Heart of Darkness, 2014'. They also form the illustrations for this new publication of Conrad's novella, which takes the form of a luxury magazine. Heart of Darkness (first published in 1899) is a story of trade and corruption, and of our own conflicts and desires. From a boat moored on the banks of the Thames, Marlow narrates his story in which he travels to the heart of the Congo in search of renegade ivory trader Kurtz, who has mesmerised and enslaved his workers. Like many artists of her generation Banner has lived just outside the boundaries of London's financial district since the early 90s observed the area's close proximity to the Square Mile and its apparent separation from it. This publication links with Banner's first artist book The Nam(1997) that references Apocalypse Now, a film that uses Conrad's text as its narrative template.

Imperial Courts by Dana Lixenberg
Publisher: Roma Publications Year: 2016 Format: Softcover Condition: New In 1992, Dana Lixenberg travelled to South Central Los Angeles for a magazine story on the riots that erupted following the verdict in the Rodney King trial. What she encountered inspired her to revisit the area, and led her to the community of the Imperial Courts housing project in Watts. Returning countless times over the following twenty-two years, Lixenberg gradually created a collaborative portrait of the changing face of this community. Over the years, some in the community were killed, while others disappeared or went to jail, and others, once children in early photographs, grew up and had children of their own. In this way, Imperial Courts constitutes a complex and evocative record of the passage of time in an underserved community. (Roma)

A Primer For Cadavers by Ed Atkins

A Primer For Cadavers by Ed Atkins
Publisher: Fitzcarraldo Editions Year: 2016 Format: Softcover Condition: New 'One of the most widely celebrated artists of his generation, Ed Atkins makes videos, draws, and writes, developing a complex and deeply figured discourse around definition, wherein the impossibilities for sufficient representations of the physical, specifically corporeal, world - from computer generated imagery to bathetic poetry - are hysterically rehearsed. A Primer for Cadavers, a startlingly original first collection, brings together a selection of his texts from 2010 to 2016. 'Part prose-poetry, part theatrical direction, part script-work, part dream-work,' writes Joe Luna in his afterword, 'Atkins' texts present something as fantastic and commonplace as the record of a creation, the diary of a writer glued to the screen of their own production, an elegiac, erotic Frankenstein for the twenty-first century.' (Fitzcarraldo Editions) 'Few young artists so instinctively grasp the zeitgeist as does Ed Atkins. In his films, computer-rendered avatars overflow with emotional monologues, and a virtuoso digital aesthetic is undercut by a fixation on flesh - death and decay are recurrent subjects'.

I Love New York Crazy City by Isa Genzken

I Love New York Crazy City by Isa Genzken
Publisher: JRP I Ringier, li> Year: 2006 Format: Hardcover Condition: New This publication reunites and publishes for the first time the three collage books realised by the artist in New York between 1995 and 1996. The original books, entitled 'I Love You New York' and 'Crazy City' have been pghotographed to allow the reproduction of each page. The front cover of this publication reproduces the cover of the first original book, and this page the back cover of the third book. New York's public-relations campaign is not likely to add "crazy city" to its already famous heart-icon declaration of love, but few would dispute the truth of noted German sculptor Isa Genzken's extension of it. Only a mind as oriented toward heterogeneity as hers could capture New York in all its insane glory. These three slipcased artist's books from the time Genzken spent in New York a decade ago are published here for the first time. The collection both illuminates the working methods she uses in her sculptures and stands alone as a work of art itself. The books contain, as do her other works, thoughtful if sundry conglomerations of the items that shape our everyday existence from design, advertising and the media. Particularly important to her are the relationships in the urban environment between public and private space, artistic autonomy and collective experience. These explorations, as a window into the mind of this important artist or a window looking out onto the city, will bring repeated enjoyment and insight.
