Eat Lights Become Lights - Modular Living
Eat Lights Become Lights - Modular Living
Following the quick fire sell out and widespread acclaim of the bands' second LP "Heavy Electrics" in 2012, ELBL release their third full length via The GPS and Rocket Girl, just in time for Summer. Building on the bands' trademark multi layered motorik groove, "Modular Living" adds a more organic, electronic approach in places. Where once, listening to Eat Lights might have focused perhaps on the adored kraut groove of Neu! / La Dusseldorf etc, "Modular Living" seems to add the key ingredients of slow burning Popol Vuh and Cluster-esque pieces into the mix. Eternally building and evolving resulting in a far better balanced listen than the previous full lengths, arguably. The momentum attained with the last LP should build nicely here- rave reviews were pretty common spread via the likes of Stuart Maconie's "Freak Zone", Andrew Weatherall's 6music show and Gideon Coe. Even a year on, tracks from "Heavy Electrics" are aired pretty regularly so the new full length comes at the perfect time for long-term devotees and the newcomer alike.

Silver City - Loading
Silver City - Loading
Julian Sanza + Fernando Pulichino make up the duo that is Silver City. They have been making balearic drenched disco since around 2002 and helped to define the genre with notable release on2020 Vision and Under The Shade. Their soon to be released new EP 'Loading' stays true to their roots with a four track vinyl of vibey goodness. 'Ride Away' is the stand out track, one that gives chills and provokes thoughts of sunny afternoons driving along the coastline with the top down.

Telephones - The Ocean Called
Telephones - The Ocean Called
Known for his releases on Sex Tags UFO and Full Pupp as well as dapper facial hair, the Norwegian Berliner graces Running Back with an island fantasy of his very own. Immured in the sands between the beaches of Rimini and Sant Antoni, "The Ocean Called EP" evokes the lucid dreams and hazy visions that pale club kids allways had of these places. Think vintage Irma and Calpyso Records done in a modern way, or Tony Humphries in swimming trunks. Four tracks, four waves of joy well as rhythm tools and cool spots. Barefoot in the head 4ever.

Usje Sukatma - Waiting For Your Love
Usje Sukatma - Waiting For Your Love
PPU keep on doin' the do, this time hitting us with a lost gem from 70s Surinam on a limited single sided promo. PPU originally squeezed this gem onto a very limited 7 back in 2011, but correctly judged that the spiritual soul power, deep bass groove and killer rhythm deserved their moment on the larger format. Usje's only record sung in English, 'Waiting For Your Love' has everything you could ask from a record, packing in vocoder, squidgy synth, glistening keys, rattling percussion and bubbling bass, all beneath Usje's warm vocals: there's even a mindblowing breakdown with laser effects, synth solos and virtuouso bass magic! In a just and fair world, this would have propelled Usje from South America to global stardom, but sadly it wasn't to be and the musical maestro became a devout family man with a 9 to 5.

Deutsche Elektronische Musik 2 B
Deutsche Elektronische Musik 2 B
Soul Jazz Records' new Deutsche Electronische Musik 2 is their second voyage into the world of German electronic music from the 1970s and early 1980s. This double CD pack/Two volumes of double vinyl (with over 2 ½ hours of amazing music!) features a stunning line-up of seminal German groups: Can, Faust, Popul Vuh, Neu, Cluster, Amon Duul II, La Dusseldorf, as well as a host of lesser known and more obscure groups and artists such as Agitation Free, Broselmachine, Niagara and many more. As well as the original pioneers, Deutsche Electronische Musik 2 also features many of the second wave of German electronic artists and groups from the late 70s and early 80s (DAF, Asmus Tietchens, Rolf Trostel) who successfully connected new wave, minimal synth and a European post-punk avant-gardism with the earlier more established Krautrock pioneers who began at the start of the 70s. 2 x LP

The Lucid Dream - Songs of Lies and Deceipt
The Lucid Dream - Songs of Lies and Deceipt
Cumbria's The Lucid Dream finally unleash their debut full length this June, following 3 sold out 45s, steady press coverage and widespread acclaim for live shows which have seen them support everyone from Beefheart's "Magic Band", Death In Vegas, A Place to Bury Strangers and Spectrum. Previous descriptions of the bands' sound has honed in on fuzz and drone heavy nods to Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized, BJM and The Heads, yet that somehow overlooks the pure pop savvy and stripped down acid drenched hooks of the US West Coast and prime era Mary Chain and Beach Boys feel to tunes like "Heartbreak Girl" and "Love In My Veins".

Can - The Lost Tapes Box Set
Can - The Lost Tapes Box Set
Limited edition numbered box style packaging with 24 page 10" booklet. Includes exclusive sleeve notes by Irmin Schmidt and Ian Harrison. The Lost Tapes was curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel Miller, compiled by Irmin Schmidt and Jono Podmore, and edited by Jono Podmore. When the legendary Can studio in Weilerswist was sold to the German Rock N Pop Museum, they bought everything, including the army mattresses that covered the walls for sound protection, and relocated it to Gronau. Whilst dismantling the studio, master tapes were found and stored in the Spoon archive. With barely legible labelling, no one was sure what was on these until Irmin Schmidt and long time collaborator Jono Podmore started to go through over 30 hours of music. What they found was years of archived material, not outtakes, but rather tracks which had been shelved for a variety of reasons - soundtracks to films that were never released and tracks that didn't make it onto the final versions of albums due to space. Irmin Schmidt explains "Obviously the tapes weren't really lost, but were left in the cupboards of the studio archives for so long everybody just forgot about them. Everybody except Hildegard, who watches over Can and its work like the dragon over the gold of the Nibelungen and doesn't allow forgetting." The final cut of tracks, dating from 1968-1977, features studio material recorded at Schloss Nörvenich and Can Studio, Weilerswist with the Can line up of Holger Czukay on bass, Michael Karoli on guitars, Jaki Liebezeit on drums and Irmin Schmidt on keyboards, and on most tracks, vocals from Malcolm Mooney or Damo Suzuki. Can was formed by ex-student of Stockhausen Irmin Schmidt, who, fired by the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa abandoned his career in classic music to form a group which could utilise and transcend all boundaries of ethnic, electronic experimental and modern classical music.

Cyclonix - People Get Real
Cyclonix - People Get Real
The Horn Wax offshoot of the Tusk Wax label has released a slew of intriguing split EPs with names like Timothy Fairplay, Paul Mac and Scott Fraser sharing 12' real estate with newcomers Forever Sound, Si Murray and Missile Crisis. The latest Horn Wax transmission focuses on new talent with Cyclonix and People Get Real, aka Simon Lister and Peter Wilson, sharing space on this vinyl only, 180g, hand stamped and individually numbered release. Soft kicks, reinforced by 909 toms are cajoled and caressed by breezy synths which rise and fall in like swaying tree branch in 'Esoteric Ideas', while the noisy electronics and step-sequenced bleeps of People Get Real's 'Cane' make for a slightly sinister and dilatory groove filled with murmuring machines and analogue hum.

Patchworks Galactic Project - Space
Patchworks Galactic Project - Space
Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart is definitely a name to remember if you're interested in today's groove music scene. After playing as a bassist and guitarist for various bands, he started producing in the mid-nineties and has kept on mixing today's technologies with the raw spirits of Disco, Funk, Soul & Jazz music's golden years since then. Following the trail of success left by his projects such as Mr President, Uptown Funk Empire, The Dynamics or Metropolitan Jazz Affair, Patchworks proved his musical ubiquity album after album and unexpectedly stroke in various genres. Teaming up again with label Favorite Recordings for this new solo effort, he transforms himself into Patchworks Galactic Project, inviting us for a fantastic musical trip called "Space": a special project influenced by the 20th century's myth about travelling, exploring, living, and even loving in Space!

Shocks IV
Shocks IV
Here lies the final chapter in the first testament of Shocks, and as with the previous three releases, we're granted no mercy. A-side tracks 'Trajl' and 'Contagious' are a full fledged assaults on the psyche, taunting with just enough melody to convince us of musicality, but never really rising from of the swamp they're stewed in. Featuring plenty of, ahem, stereo dimensionalism, 'Trajl' provide a tripped out cosmic house chug - perfect for that A Love From Outer Space dancefloor. 'Contagious' shuffles across the room with an ethno tribal feel - Jon Hassle style sinuous trumpet lines, top note chimes and a continuous head-nodding groove. Droning, drifting ambient psych B-side cut 'Klámata' could be seen as a comedown after all that chugging, but provides the perfect counterpoint.

Nirosta Steel - Some Say
Nirosta Steel - Some Say
Wilde Calm Records is proud to present "Some Say," a recently discovered song from the archive of Arthur Russell. The track was produced and mixed by Arthur in 1985 for a solo project of Steven Hall's that was originally intended for release on Rough Trade Records. Legendary disco producer Bob Blank recorded and engineered the project at his Connecticut-based studio. Steven now records under the name Nirosta Steel. The B-side features an extended rework of "Some Say" by Pocketknife using Arthur's BOSS Dr. Rhythm DR-55.

Vick Lavender Feat Diviniti - Let It Go
Vick Lavender Feat Diviniti - Let It Go
Following the summer-sizzled 'LOVE Song' comes another smooth soul schooling from Victor Lavender. Smoking keys and a lolloping bassline set the scene as Diviniti's vocals cause a spell-binding ear roadblock to great effect. For something deeper and more percussive jump on ReelSoul's drum-heavy instrumental while Josh Milan Honeycomb extends the soul aspects and injects a tiny bit of jazz to recipe giving it a confident MAW-like polish. '1929' completes the set with more jazzed out leanings thanks to the dreamy keys and piano work, tied together neatly with a funky squidgy bassline and subtle percussion elements.

Rune Lindbaek and Oyvind Blikstad - North
Rune Lindbaek returns after a short hiatus with his first release on his own Drum Island imprint since 2013's 'Krasava' LP, and it's a total beauty. Teaming up with recent LP collaborator Oyvind Blikstad on 'North', Rune proves beyond all doubt that he's the master of the Scando-Med groove, marrying icy melodies and glacial Norse chords with tropical polyrhythms and sunny guitars. The melancholic tone of previous single 'Wonder' is still there, but with song structure left behind, 'North' has all the space it needs to bloom into a string filled epic you can lose yourself in completely.

Marcos Valle Vento Sui
Marcos Valle Vento Sui
During the hot Brazilian summer of 1971, Marcos and Paulo Sergio Valle, along with their significant others and six additional couples, rented a few modest fisherman shacks in the small village of Búzios to escape from Rio's more populated beaches. The focus was making music and soul searching, as was the practice for affluent young hippies back then. They stayed for two months. "I wanted to go in a new direction," says Marcos looking back. "I wanted to try out a rock influence and to risk a little bit more." Shifting away from the studio musicians used on 1971's Garra, Vento Sul (translation "South Wind") was a rewarding collaboration with Brazilian progressive rockers O Terço. Originally released in 1972, Vento Sul not only channeled the Búzios beach bum vibe, but also manifested a floating dream like psychedelic sound. Any way you spin it, we at Light In The Attic are extremely proud to present Vento Sul as part of our four-album Marcos Valle reissue campaign. Consisting of an ambitious string of early 1970s landmark studio sessions (sympathetic in spirit to Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye's game changing work from the same era) and released on CD and LP, Vento Sul (including a rare bonus track on the CD version) features extensive liner notes by San Francisco-based writer Allen Thayer (Wax Poetics) with exclusive interview content and song-by-song breakdown from Marcos himself. Fans new and old will finally have easy breezy access to these once hard-to-find Brazilian classics. Elevated by a strong union between Valle and O Terço, Vento Sul's magical spell of an album is a welcome addition to any South American friendly record collection and sits proudly with the best of Brazil.

Lord of The Isles - Galaxy Near You
Lord of The Isles - Galaxy Near You
It's been nearly two years since the shadowy Lord Of The Isles began his own Little Strong imprint, and though this is only the second release on the label the man's been far from idle. With releases on ENE Japan, Phonica, and the Firecracker offshoots Unthank and Shevchenko, to name but a few, his name has earned plaudits from connoisseurs across the planet. Now he reappears with a package of delights showcasing still more of his signature sound, which simultaneously manages to evoke both colourful tropical climes and barren northern landscapes. 'Timeless' is a much misused word, but here it is truly applicable with the likes of 'Ossian's Hall' calling to mind ancient folk melodies and rhythms, post rave sunrise soundtracks, and utopian future visions. Meditative synth passages which are fast becoming the Lord's forte are present once more also, with 'Fey Folk' and 'Xatsiv' providing the calm which is so welcome in this world of quick fix rhythm tracks. Finally, 'Nustron' exists in that zone between the outer and inner worlds, between the dancefloor and the sofa, both very fine places to find oneself.

Autonomous Africa Vol 2
Autonomous Africa Vol 2
Many of the problems Africa faces are a result of outside interference by other countries, and as the 21st century progresses we will see the continued pillage of African resources to feed the global capitalist machine on an unprecedented scale. Corrupt and greedy regimes gladly sell their land and mineral wealth to finance their own extravagant lifestyles while the vast majority of ordinary people see little or no improvement in their own lives. An autonomous Africa run by the people for the people, where African land is predominantly used to feed African people and Africa's vast wealth of resources is used to benefit the people of Africa seems the only logical way forward. Autonomous Africa's goal is to highlight this message and here presents to you 4 tracks of African inspired grooves.

Sven Weisemann - Inner Motions
Sven Weisemann - Inner Motions
Beautiful second album by Weisemann. Inner Motions he is focussing more on emotional club compatible tracks but does not lose sight of the demanding home listener at all. Over the course of 12 songs Sven excels with his very own trademark sound, the sound that became a big and important part of the unique Mojuba universe since it beginning in 2005 and was so inspiring for many people in the years to follow. Inner Motions tells a beautiful and adventurous story and makes you feel welcome right away. The plot of the album is inspired by electronic music's classic and timeless albums of the early and mid 90s and so every little track plays an important role to serve the album concept as whole listening experience! Even the recent other musical explorations by Sven Weisemann under various pseudonyms like Desolate, Phidias or Jouem can also be found reverberating in this oeuvre.

Vidal Benjamin presents Disco Sympathie
Vidal Benjamin presents Disco Sympathie
This October, the compilation Disco Sympathy will be released on Versatile. It's author is Vidal Benjamin, an outstanding DJ / digger, considered by his pals as one of the most brilliant in his category. And that says a lot! Here he makes us rediscover the sound that was so characteristic of a certain early eighties French scene: wacky, happy, dancing and at times even poetic. One begins to travel through an era during which the French producers were not afraid to tackle disco, American boogie, British and German synth wave, to present us their version: French, poppy and above all, fun. As a prelude, before releasing the compilation, Versatile has released this 45 rpm maxi, on which every track has undergone an editing treatment by mysterious French producers: Jean-Marc Misère (last sighted somewhere near London), DJ Ringardos (who, since his last Versatile release in 2008, chose Roman exile), ALT (already spotted on the Edits Du Golem and on the US label Black Disco), and of course Vidal Benjamin himself, accompanied by Gilbert Cohen - the boss.

In the early 1970s, Franco Evangelisti, a collective of Italian composers that included Ennio Morricone on trumpet. He aspired to revolutionize composition through group improvisation and like their peer, Karlheinz Stockhausen musique concrte, aleatory (controlled chance) techniques and early electronic music. One significant influence in the studio was their use of chess to define key parameters of their music. Musica Su Schemi is unpredictable, fluid and always marked by a tension between the performers and their conscious rejection of traditional forms.
