Fragile (36) - That's Desire / Here We Are EP
$30.00
Fragile (36) - That's Desire / Here We Are EP
That's Desire/Here We Are EP is a 12" vinyl and digital release by Fragile, Wolfgang Tillmans' evolving band project that spans from early recordings in 1986 with Bert Lessmann to a full band ensemble made up of a group of musicians in New York in 2016. The double A-side EP opens with That's Desire, a collaboration with the New York rapper Ash B. The song evokes associations with DFA, DAF and a queer Talking Heads. In a spontaneous action Ash B. takes over the mic and raps over Tillmans' heartfelt lyrics, originally written in 1985, combined with a funky bass line by Thomas Roach. The experiment results in a driving indie-dance sensation about the pleasure and pain of getting lost in one's own desire. While Tillmans and Ash B. have their own individual take on their desires, the song's arrangement and energy unifies them. Fragile is a Wolfgang Tillmans band project in varying constellations including: 1985/86: Bert Lessmann, 2016 Porto: Juan Pablo Echeverri, Jorge Costa, Ricardo Martins, Edys Da Silva, Nuno Pereira, 2016 New York: Juan Pablo Echeverri, Kyle Combs, Jay Pluck, Tom Roach, Daniel Pearce, Tim Knapp, Ted McGrath

Michael Chapman - Wrecked Again
$25.00
Michael Chapman - Wrecked Again
Following Light In The Attic's acclaimed reissues of British singer, songwriter and hugely talented psych, folk and rock guitarist Michael Chapman's seminal albums Fully Qualified Survivor and Rainmaker, comes 1971's Wrecked Again, his final for EMI's seminal stoner imprint Harvest, home to Kevin Ayers and Syd Barrett. Like other artists in the stable, Chapman's music contains a drugged-out feel, sublime guitar playing and intense lyrics, yet Chapman's career was not a pet project. Buried in EMI's release schedule and afforded no promotional budget, Wrecked Again is his lost classic. Recorded at the noted Rockfield Studio, a residential complex-cum-working farm in Wales, Wrecked Again explores orchestration via Paul Buckmaster (Miles Davis, David Bowie) and The London Symphony Orchestra and production courtesy of Gus Dudgeon (Elton John, Bonzo Dog Band), but also explores a new sound influenced by Memphis soul. With a blend of electric and acoustic instruments, Chapman is found where he feels most comfortable: in-between folk and rock, contrasting soft with edgy. Chapman went on to record more than 30 albums and tour extensively, but Wrecked Again was a pivotal moment in his career, the tipping point between his earlier, folkier material and his later, rockier output on Deram.

Audiotech - Darkside

Audiotech - Darkside
On this collaboration with Mark Ernestus, of Rhythm & Sound, Juan offers new ways of hearing the future utilizing sounds of the recent past. Dark Side displays exquisite techno, electro, and dub influences to create a seamless, inspiring piece of music. The percussive rhythms and dub-influenced tones and melodies meld together under Juan's vocals. If anyone's voice is right for techno, it is Magic Juan Atkins' telling us to free our minds and travel to other realities. On side B, Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer expertly maintain the dub sounds of the original track. They extend the cut to more than double the length and transform Dark Side into a meditative track steeped in broken and staccato beats. Laying a foundation of looping rhythmic patterns from the original track, this remix adds distorted, hollow snare drums to create new rhythms. Dissonant tones, introduced midway through the track, hint at a new melody, making the track mindful and danceable at the same time.

Rune Lindbaek and Oyvind Blikstad - North
Rune Lindbaek returns after a short hiatus with his first release on his own Drum Island imprint since 2013's 'Krasava' LP, and it's a total beauty. Teaming up with recent LP collaborator Oyvind Blikstad on 'North', Rune proves beyond all doubt that he's the master of the Scando-Med groove, marrying icy melodies and glacial Norse chords with tropical polyrhythms and sunny guitars. The melancholic tone of previous single 'Wonder' is still there, but with song structure left behind, 'North' has all the space it needs to bloom into a string filled epic you can lose yourself in completely.

Shocks IV

Shocks IV
Here lies the final chapter in the first testament of Shocks, and as with the previous three releases, we're granted no mercy. A-side tracks 'Trajl' and 'Contagious' are a full fledged assaults on the psyche, taunting with just enough melody to convince us of musicality, but never really rising from of the swamp they're stewed in. Featuring plenty of, ahem, stereo dimensionalism, 'Trajl' provide a tripped out cosmic house chug - perfect for that A Love From Outer Space dancefloor. 'Contagious' shuffles across the room with an ethno tribal feel - Jon Hassle style sinuous trumpet lines, top note chimes and a continuous head-nodding groove. Droning, drifting ambient psych B-side cut 'Klámata' could be seen as a comedown after all that chugging, but provides the perfect counterpoint.

Vick Lavender Feat Diviniti - Let It Go

Vick Lavender Feat Diviniti - Let It Go
Following the summer-sizzled 'LOVE Song' comes another smooth soul schooling from Victor Lavender. Smoking keys and a lolloping bassline set the scene as Diviniti's vocals cause a spell-binding ear roadblock to great effect. For something deeper and more percussive jump on ReelSoul's drum-heavy instrumental while Josh Milan Honeycomb extends the soul aspects and injects a tiny bit of jazz to recipe giving it a confident MAW-like polish. '1929' completes the set with more jazzed out leanings thanks to the dreamy keys and piano work, tied together neatly with a funky squidgy bassline and subtle percussion elements.

Wilde Calm Records is proud to present "Some Say," a recently discovered song from the archive of Arthur Russell. The track was produced and mixed by Arthur in 1985 for a solo project of Steven Hall's that was originally intended for release on Rough Trade Records. Legendary disco producer Bob Blank recorded and engineered the project at his Connecticut-based studio. Steven now records under the name Nirosta Steel. The B-side features an extended rework of "Some Say" by Pocketknife using Arthur's BOSS Dr. Rhythm DR-55.

The Lucid Dream - Songs of Lies and Deceipt
Cumbria's The Lucid Dream finally unleash their debut full length this June, following 3 sold out 45s, steady press coverage and widespread acclaim for live shows which have seen them support everyone from Beefheart's "Magic Band", Death In Vegas, A Place to Bury Strangers and Spectrum. Previous descriptions of the bands' sound has honed in on fuzz and drone heavy nods to Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized, BJM and The Heads, yet that somehow overlooks the pure pop savvy and stripped down acid drenched hooks of the US West Coast and prime era Mary Chain and Beach Boys feel to tunes like "Heartbreak Girl" and "Love In My Veins".

Cyclonix - People Get Real
The Horn Wax offshoot of the Tusk Wax label has released a slew of intriguing split EPs with names like Timothy Fairplay, Paul Mac and Scott Fraser sharing 12' real estate with newcomers Forever Sound, Si Murray and Missile Crisis. The latest Horn Wax transmission focuses on new talent with Cyclonix and People Get Real, aka Simon Lister and Peter Wilson, sharing space on this vinyl only, 180g, hand stamped and individually numbered release. Soft kicks, reinforced by 909 toms are cajoled and caressed by breezy synths which rise and fall in like swaying tree branch in 'Esoteric Ideas', while the noisy electronics and step-sequenced bleeps of People Get Real's 'Cane' make for a slightly sinister and dilatory groove filled with murmuring machines and analogue hum.

Eat Lights Become Lights - Modular Living
Following the quick fire sell out and widespread acclaim of the bands' second LP "Heavy Electrics" in 2012, ELBL release their third full length via The GPS and Rocket Girl, just in time for Summer. Building on the bands' trademark multi layered motorik groove, "Modular Living" adds a more organic, electronic approach in places. Where once, listening to Eat Lights might have focused perhaps on the adored kraut groove of Neu! / La Dusseldorf etc, "Modular Living" seems to add the key ingredients of slow burning Popol Vuh and Cluster-esque pieces into the mix. Eternally building and evolving resulting in a far better balanced listen than the previous full lengths, arguably. The momentum attained with the last LP should build nicely here- rave reviews were pretty common spread via the likes of Stuart Maconie's "Freak Zone", Andrew Weatherall's 6music show and Gideon Coe. Even a year on, tracks from "Heavy Electrics" are aired pretty regularly so the new full length comes at the perfect time for long-term devotees and the newcomer alike.

Gerstaffelen - The Old Villagers

Gerstaffelen - The Old Villagers
Mysterious producer Gerstaffelen here debuts on Dutch label MOS Deep with The Old Villagers, a four track EP of grainy analogue house. If you've heard label boss Aroy Dee DJ recently you may well have heard one of the tracks, which has already proven a success on knowing dancefloors around Europe. The title track opens things up at a mid tempo house pace. It's a dense, multi-layered track with plenty of squiggly synths, bobbling analogue basslines and radiant pads. 'Game On Major' is slightly more frenzied, with dusty hi hats looping over fairly frenzied synth sounds and some hints of acid are buried deep within this hazy sound world. 'Little Green Munchkin Men' gets even more unhinged and techno leaning with the sounds of various analogue machines all meshing together into a nebulous brew of off killer melody and curious metal hooks, before last track 'When The Mind Stops' brings a bit of raw old school house flavour to the table. The beats jack, some muffled vocals add an important human element and like everything on the EP the track invites you to lose your shit in the most beguiling of ways.

Jialong 009
Junior Boys member Jeremy Greenspan made a fine debut on Jiaolong earlier this year, reworking Laurie Spiegel's 'Drums' into a cacophony of kick drums and pulsating analogue arpeggios so it makes complete sense for Dan Snaith to invite the Canadian back for a full release. Pairing up with the unheralded Borys, this four track God Told Me EP clearly demonstrates that Greenspan is enjoying the creative freedom Jiaolong allows him, commencing in devilish fashion with the title track. Casting aside any intentions of subtlety, 'God Told Me to' rips along in high octane fashion driven by a thunderous arpeggiated lead synth whilst 'Saint Hood' conjures the spirit of our Metal Dance forbearers for some twisted proto techno. 'The Devil's Punch Bowl' sounds just as much like a Bleaching Agent track as the title suggests whilst 'Stylite' offers some electronically charged respite with a little bit of help from Christina Sealy.

Optimo Trax is an offshoot label of Optimo Music for tracks aimed at DJs/dancefloors. Yes, we know there are too many record labels already, but we felt an overriding desire to start another one as so much music that didn't seem quite right for Optimo Music (i.e. music that was specifically designed for dancing) kept coming our way. Like the parent label, Optimo Trax will release music by new artists and excavate forgotten classics. L/F/D/M is from London and studied art with Dom from Factory Floor, who encouraged him to work on music production. But his musical influences range from jazz, exotica, afrobeat, disco, post punk - you name it. "I guess all the music you soak up just filters through one way or another. Music production is often about exploiting chance and about decisions made in that moment. I'm always trying to reach that magic point where you can remove yourself from what you're making, and the music starts to trigger an emotion rather than just being blocks of colour on a computer." - L/F/D/M.

Two Sunsets - Katy Komatsu
Liverpool's Two Sunsets have steadily been attaining rave reviews locally following the quickfire selling out of their debut 45 "Venetian Skies" (also on The GPS earlier in the year) and especially off the back of advance listens to the great "Katy Komatsu" here. With mastering and production from Sonic Boom, the A side is a gorgeously melodic, hazy summer pop gem, occasionally haunting with hooks to die for, this one's as pretty much perfect a slice of out of focus, summer psych as it gets. Both tunes here have a feel uniquely their own- the B side especially, "Searchlights" feels like the backdrop to some late summer psychedelic fairground soundtrack, which under Sonic Boom's tutorage takes on an air of half speed slow motion comedown. Just gorgeous and coupled with the GPS eye for packaging (linen card sleeve, sticker and split duo tone half clear / half blue wax) makes this one pretty much an essential 45. Released as a hand numbered edition of 400 on 7" vinyl only.

Released as a pressing of 500 only on mauve, red and black splatter wax with embossed DD insert. Recently unearthed by Justin specifically for this vinyl release (although watch out for an extended version for cassette only later) the set starts with the wonderful zoned out pulse of "Acerbic Lament" interspersed by JW's piercing guitar tones and textures. "Winter of Discontent" is more organic, otherworldly and in places reminiscent of some of the early Popol Vuh catalogue. The reverse features the epic sidelong "Ceremony of the Blind", constituting 3 parts and to these ears represents one of the finest sides to the huge Expo 70 catalogue. A compelling cosmic soundscape punctuated by evolving waves of carefully constructed synth and guitar drone with flurries of percussive pulse, particularly on the closing section "Eternal The Night". Another essential addition to the ever growing Expo 70 collection- a one off pressing on gorgeous coloured wax with 2 inserts in awesome JW designed sleeve, expected to sell out quickly.

Ultramarine - This Time Last Year
'This Time Last Year' is the sixth album by UK electronic duo Ultramarine (Ian Cooper & Paul Hammond), and their first full-length release for 15 years. Featuring all-new material and recorded in the band's isolated studio on the edge of the Essex marshes, the album ebbs and flows in mood like the nearby Blackwater estuary. Working with a palette of vintage drum machines, analogue synths, textural samples, acoustic recordings, electric bass & heavily treated guitar, the songs were born out of captured live studio performances. Cooper and Hammond then rewired their initial sketches through a series of hands-on, lo-fi effects chains, blurring the edges between acoustic and electronic elements. The result is an organic, playful feel, leaving the music room to breathe and carrying distinct echoes of the band's previous work.

Ghosts on Tape - No Guestlist
When San Francisco's ICEE HOT launched its own record label last fall with a new record from Ghosts On Tape (one of the party's founders), there was a lot of talk about how quiet he's been in recent years. Now, a mere nine months later, that's all changed. Following the release of 'Nature's Law,' Ghosts On Tape has been on an absolute tear, dropping numerous remixes and turning out new tunes at a blinding clip. At this point, he's built up a solid reserve of dance floor weapons, and ICEE HOT is thrilled to begin unleashing it upon the world. 'No Guestlist' is the first salvo, and it's an absolute stormer. Combining the brash spirit of classic Chicago with Ghosts On Tape's drum-heavy sensibilities, the much sought-after tune has been lighting up ICEE HOT for months and is poised to do some major damage. The producer's own 'Underground Mix' takes things deeper, albeit while keeping the sass of the original version intact. Finnish producer Arttu has also been enlisted to remix 'No Guestlist,' and kicks off the b-side with a playful and light-hearted take that employs snapping drum patterns and gleefully lilting melodies. Rounding out the record is another Ghosts On Tape original, 'Still Got the Feeling,' a darker, slower burning cut that reflects just how effective he can be when experimenting with a more techno-flavoured template.

Boardwalk - I'm To Blame
In the Summer of 2012, Boardwalk duo Mike Edge and Amber Quintero were introduced by mutual friends in Los Angeles. Although both were involved in different musical projects (Mike contributing his musical and production know-how, Amber contributing her vocal ability), an undeniable creative chemistry made itself present between the two within a short time of introduction. This chemistry sparked a curiosity that could only be satiated by a collaboration of minds. The creative compatibility test came one day on an impromptu road trip. The elements involved were basic yet obligatory: a guy, a girl, a car, the open road. The trip yielded the birth of the unique sound that is Boardwalk. Featuring analog sounds and vocal melodies over dreamy instrumental layers, this 7" features the tracks "I'm To Blame" and "Crying" from their forthcoming debut self-titled album on Stones Throw.

The mysterious Frederick is a rapidly-rising star, already recording for the likes of Restless Soul, Soul Free, Fifty Fathoms Deep and Local Talk and 'Episode of Love' is a sneaky preview of just what to expect from his debut album coming in 2014. "Episode of Love" in its original version is an exquisite slice of slo-mo house hypnotica whose tempo belies its laser-guided effectiveness on the dancefloor. A four note call and response horn-like synth pattern blasts over a chugging low-down acid house rhythm with Linn drums supplying electro-disco-dub echoes. Miseriedits first remixers Hot Lunch take the track to the low countries circa '87. On the flip Sean Johnston takes a moment from strutting the spaceways with Commander Weatherall to turn in yet another superb remix as Hardway Bros. Taking the track up through the gears and adding a drop of acid in the punch, in 1989 they'd have called it hypno-house. TM404 - Svans EP
TM404 aka Andreas Tilliander drops his first EP, after the celebrated debut album from earlier this year. TM404 is a project where Andreas Tilliander embarks on a conceptual journey through classic Roland machinery. In February we saw the light of his first album under the moniker and it is probably one of the best albums this year. Since then Andreas has toured the world with his huge bag of Roland gear, finally landing a gig at Richie Hawtins Enter club concept at Ibiza. This is no wonder. On the A-side of the Svans EP you can clearly hear the connection to Richie and his Plastikman project. The track 303/303/303/606/606 is heavy, slow grooving techno that brings the listener back to the dark emptiness of the Plastikman Consumed era. On the b-side the TM404 project is allowed elevated to new levels. With a Yamaha SY-1 and a Yamaha TG33 entering the machine park, TM404 for the first time, breaks his Roland oath and opens up the project to a future of new possibilities. During the development of the Svans EP this track actually went under the working title 'the summer hit'. Take a listen to the fine bassline, airy production and the Selected Ambient Works-inspired harmonies and sounds and you will know why. Welcome to over 12 minutes of pure old school bliss. To be played really loud on a very good soundsystem.

Marcos Valle Vento Sui

Marcos Valle Vento Sui
During the hot Brazilian summer of 1971, Marcos and Paulo Sergio Valle, along with their significant others and six additional couples, rented a few modest fisherman shacks in the small village of Búzios to escape from Rio's more populated beaches. The focus was making music and soul searching, as was the practice for affluent young hippies back then. They stayed for two months. "I wanted to go in a new direction," says Marcos looking back. "I wanted to try out a rock influence and to risk a little bit more." Shifting away from the studio musicians used on 1971's Garra, Vento Sul (translation "South Wind") was a rewarding collaboration with Brazilian progressive rockers O Terço. Originally released in 1972, Vento Sul not only channeled the Búzios beach bum vibe, but also manifested a floating dream like psychedelic sound. Any way you spin it, we at Light In The Attic are extremely proud to present Vento Sul as part of our four-album Marcos Valle reissue campaign. Consisting of an ambitious string of early 1970s landmark studio sessions (sympathetic in spirit to Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye's game changing work from the same era) and released on CD and LP, Vento Sul (including a rare bonus track on the CD version) features extensive liner notes by San Francisco-based writer Allen Thayer (Wax Poetics) with exclusive interview content and song-by-song breakdown from Marcos himself. Fans new and old will finally have easy breezy access to these once hard-to-find Brazilian classics. Elevated by a strong union between Valle and O Terço, Vento Sul's magical spell of an album is a welcome addition to any South American friendly record collection and sits proudly with the best of Brazil.

Lord of The Isles - Galaxy Near You
It's been nearly two years since the shadowy Lord Of The Isles began his own Little Strong imprint, and though this is only the second release on the label the man's been far from idle. With releases on ENE Japan, Phonica, and the Firecracker offshoots Unthank and Shevchenko, to name but a few, his name has earned plaudits from connoisseurs across the planet. Now he reappears with a package of delights showcasing still more of his signature sound, which simultaneously manages to evoke both colourful tropical climes and barren northern landscapes. 'Timeless' is a much misused word, but here it is truly applicable with the likes of 'Ossian's Hall' calling to mind ancient folk melodies and rhythms, post rave sunrise soundtracks, and utopian future visions. Meditative synth passages which are fast becoming the Lord's forte are present once more also, with 'Fey Folk' and 'Xatsiv' providing the calm which is so welcome in this world of quick fix rhythm tracks. Finally, 'Nustron' exists in that zone between the outer and inner worlds, between the dancefloor and the sofa, both very fine places to find oneself.

Beautiful second album by Weisemann. Inner Motions he is focussing more on emotional club compatible tracks but does not lose sight of the demanding home listener at all. Over the course of 12 songs Sven excels with his very own trademark sound, the sound that became a big and important part of the unique Mojuba universe since it beginning in 2005 and was so inspiring for many people in the years to follow. Inner Motions tells a beautiful and adventurous story and makes you feel welcome right away. The plot of the album is inspired by electronic music's classic and timeless albums of the early and mid 90s and so every little track plays an important role to serve the album concept as whole listening experience! Even the recent other musical explorations by Sven Weisemann under various pseudonyms like Desolate, Phidias or Jouem can also be found reverberating in this oeuvre.
