Wingspan: 20.5 inches. The Lockheed Constellation was first introduced in 1943, and served as a long range troop transport for the U.S. Army Air Force. Only a few were produced during the war, but the Constellation truly came into its prime after World War II as a civilian airliner. The Constellation was the world's foremost civilian airliner from the end of World War II until newer jet-engine aircraft rendered it obsolete. The final versions were retired from civilian service in 1967, but a U.S. Navy early warning variant continued in use until 1978. This particular model is styled after the 1049 Super Constellation G, with a detailed finish marking it as a Trans World Airlines craft. The 747s were chosen for modification for a number of reasons, including the fact that a civilian model aircraft would allow NASA to own the transports rather than lease them from the U.S. Air Force. In the initial years of operation, during the Space Shuttle's testing, the first shuttle ferry still bore the American Airlines paint scheme that the aircraft was originally intended to operate with. NASA eventually replaced the coloration in the 1980s, and this is how the aircraft is modeled here, in a precisely detailed reproduction of NASA's own paint scheme. The B-1 is America's primary supersonic bomber, and one of a handful of large supersonic aircraft in the world. It has a variable-sweep wing design, and with the retirement of the F-14 in 2006, it is the only variable-sweep aircraft operational in the American military. The B-1 holds several speed and agility records for its weight class, and there are no immediate plans to replace it.
