Captain America: Civil War (dvd)
Captain America: Civil War (dvd)
In this superhero epic, the denizens of the Marvel Universe are forced to pick sides when Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) come to blows over ideological differences. After a mission involving a new Avengers squad led by Cap ends with several civilian casualties in Lagos, the team are asked to sign an agreement that would force them to take orders from a United Nations panel. Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) pressures Cap to accept this new arrangement, in part because he feels deeply guilty about his own past recklessness; Captain America, however, fears that the Avengers will only be corrupted by bureaucracy. Their disagreement eventually escalates into all-out war when Cap's old friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), now a brainwashed assassin known as the Winter Soldier, reenters the picture. Captain America: Civil War brings back former Avengers characters such as Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Vision (Paul Bettany); it also drags into the fray low-rent superhero Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and introduces both the powerful African prince Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and a new, younger incarnation of Spider-Man (Tom Holland). Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo~Jack Rodgers

Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl [2 Discs] (dvd)
Following his surprise-hit American remake of The Ring in 2002, director Gore Verbinski took on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the second of recent films to be based upon Disney theme-park rides (the first being The Country Bears). When Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the daughter of Governor Swann (Jonathan Pryce) is kidnapped by a group of pirates led by Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and taken aboard their ship, The Black Pearl, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), the young man who loves Elizabeth despite the fact that she is promised to another, sets out to rescue her. But he can't do it alone, so he enlists the help of swashbuckling ship captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). Together the two chase after The Black Pearl, but they soon discover that the captain and crew aren't your average pirates. Cursed to remain between the living and the dead, Barbossa and his men look like skeletons when basked in the moonlight. When it is revealed that the only thing that can break the curse is Elizabeth's blood, Jack and Will are faced with a race against time and a battle against the undead to save the Governor's daughter~Matthew Tobey

A Bug's Life [blu-ray]
A Bug's Life [blu-ray]
John Lasseter, director of Pixar's movie phenomenon Toy Story, has set new standards in computer animation with this effort, another Disney-released children's epic entitled A Bug's Life. Blending classic Disney storytelling characters and the mysterious underground world of bugs, Lasseter has created a film that can be enjoyed by all audiences, and another franchise in the process. A Bug's Life is a computerized retelling of the Aesop fable The Ant and the Grasshopper, made as a cartoon-short by the one-and-only, Walt Disney, in the mid-'30s. However, A Bug's Life has modernized the story with many new twists and celebrity voices. The story focuses on a colony of ants who seasonally gather food for themselves and a wild gang of rowdy grasshoppers. When bumbling worker ant Flik (David Foley) destroys the food supply, the angry grasshoppers, lead by the maniacally warped Hopper (Kevin Spacey), threaten to kill the ants if they don't produce a new supply of food by the time they return - an impossible feat. Flik leaves the anthill in search of help in the form of bigger bugs, and to wage war against the grasshoppers. What he doesn't know is he has actually discovered a group of down-on-their-luck traveling circus insects in need of a job. When the ants realize that their heroes are really circus performers (and the circus bugs realize these grasshoppers are really big and mean), the situation goes from bad to worse. Ultimately, the ants use their large numbers to overcome the grasshoppers~Chris Gore

The Golden Girls: Season 7 (dvd)
The Golden Girls: Season 7 (dvd)
With series star Bea Arthur announcing that she did not wish to continue playing fiftysomething teacher Dorothy Zbornak any longer, it was decided that the seventh season of the NBC sitcom Golden Girls would be the last. Perhaps for this reason, the series' ratings plummeted from tenth to 30th place - though even with a diminished viewership, the series remained one of NBC's most popular and profitable offerings. In the course of this final season, Dorothy's roommate Rose (Rue McClanahan) concludes that her relationship with former Mob accountant Miles Webber (Harold Gould) is not going anywhere, though this hardly means that Miles is completely out of her life. One piquant season-seven episode, "Old Boyfriends, reunites Betty White and Rue McClanahan (as Rose and Dorothy's roomie Blanche) with the actresses' former Mama's Family co-star, Ken Berry. The two-part "The Monkey Show" is built around Dorothy's sister Gloria, played in an earlier season by Polly Holliday and herein enacted by Dena Dietrich; this episode also features Dinah Manoff, playing her Carol Weston character from the Golden Girls spin-off series Empty Nest. In another Golden Girls/Empty Nest crossover, David Leisure (as Charlie Dietz) appears in "Questions and Answers," the centerpiece of which is a takeoff of the game show Jeopardy, featuring that series' host Alex Trebek and producer Merv Griffin. And the two-parter "Home Again, Rose" marks the one and only appearance of Blanche's daughter Janet, played by Jessica Lundy. In the hour-long season finale, Dorothy marries Blanche's uncle Lucas (Leslie Nielsen), thereby launching a set of circumstances that would ultimately lead Rose, Blanche, and Sophia into another Golden Girls spin-off series, The Golden Palace, in the fall of 1992~Hal Erickson

The Golden Girls: Season 2 (dvd)
The Golden Girls: Season 2 (dvd)
Having emerged from its first season as the seventh highest-rated program in America - and one of four NBC sitcoms in the Top Ten - The Golden Girls waltzed into its second season on NBC's Saturday-night lineup with the greatest of ease. Virtually no changes were made with the basic cast and format: the setting was still the Miami home of flirtatious fiftysomething widow Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan) and her housemate contemporaries, outspoken substitute teacher Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur) and naïve, timid widow Rose Nylund (Betty White). Also sharing the girls' home was Dorothy's peppery mother, Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty), whose lack of "tact cells" (the result of a stroke) had given her carte blanche to say the most outrageous and embarrassing things imaginable. Also carried over from season one were the girls' efforts to make ends meet on their pooled incomes, and to find true romance with a steady stream of eligible middle-aged bachelors. Additionally, Dorothy's unreliable ex-husband, Stan (Herb Edelman), continued in his efforts to re-insinuate himself in his former wife's life. Some of the recurring characters introduced in the first season - Dorothy's daughter, Kate, Blanche's flamboyant father, "Big Daddy" - returned to the series, though not played by the same actors as in season one (this season they were played by Deena Freeman and David Wayne, respectively). Of the newer semi-regulars, the foremost was Sophia's estranged sister, Angela, a role that earned an Emmy nomination for guest actress Nancy Walker. Moving up from seventh to fifth place in the ratings (and joining three other popular NBC sitcoms in the Top Five), The Golden Girls also added to its ever-growing list of Emmy awards with honors for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing (Terry Hughes), and Outstanding Lead Actress (Rue McClanahan, winning an award that had gone the previous season to her co-star Betty White). As bonus, the final episode of The Golden Girls' second season performed double duty as the pilot for the soon-to-be equally popular sitcom Empty Nest - though by the time that series made its official debut in 1988, the entire cast had been changed and the format considerably altered.

The Golden Girls: Season 4 (dvd)
The Golden Girls: Season 4 (dvd)
Roommates Dorothy (Betty White), Blanche (Rue McClanahan), Rose (Betty White), and Sophia (Estelle Getty) continue to prove that there is still plenty of life (among other pleasurable things!) after age 50 in the fourth season of the NBC sitcom The Golden Girls. The opening episode, "Yokel Hero," marks the first of several crossover appearances by Richard Mulligan as Dr. Harry Weston, the character he played on the Golden Girls spin-off series Empty Nest. Jack Gilford, who previous co-starred with Rue McClanahan on the very short-lived sitcom Apple Pie, is cast as Max Weinstock, the fiancé of Dorothy's octogenarian mother, Sophia, in the two-part "Sophia's Wedding" (the marriage comes off, but the couple separates - and even though there's no talk of a divorce, Max is never seen again). "Scared Straight" marks the first of two appearances by Monte Markham as Blanche's gay brother Clayton. In "The Little Sister," Inga Swenson makes her one and only appearance as Rose's younger sister Holly. And in "You Gotta Have Hope," Bob Hope guest stars as - who else? - Bob Hope. The season ends with the two-parter "We're Outta Here," in which the girls face the possibility of breaking up when Blanche considers selling their house - thus sparking a flow of reminiscences via excerpts from previous episodes of Golden Girls, which in its fourth season on the air was America's sixth most popular TV series~Hal Erickson

Most people have trouble deciding what to say when they're asked what they've been doing with their lives at a High School reunion, but Martin Blank (as played by John Cusack) has a different problem than most - he has to make his career sound less interesting than it actually is. Martin is a former CIA operative who is now a freelance hit man, making good money for killing people he doesn't know. However, Martin's game has been a bit off lately; he's no longer happy in his work, and both his secretary Marcella (Joan Cusack) and his psychiatrist, Dr. Oatman (Alan Arkin), who is more than a bit nervous about having a hired assassin as a patient, think that Martin should accept an offered assignment in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, his old home town, which would conveniently coincide with his ten year high school reunion. While in Grosse Pointe, Martin discovers that his high school sweetheart, Debi Newberry (Minnie Driver), is still living in town, and still holds a grudge against him for standing her up on prom night. While Martin tries to sort out his past and tie up loose ends with Debi (whom he still loves), he discovers someone in Grosse Pointe is out to kill him; he's also confronted by the highly unstable Mr. Grocer (Dan Aykroyd), a fellow hit man who wants Martin to join forces with him and form a union and isn't keen on taking no for an answer. To Rob's horror, Laura starts dating Ian (Tim Robbins), his upstairs neighbor, known throughout the building for his long and noisy sex sessions. Beauty And The Beast [25th Anniversary Edition] [includes Digital Copy] [blu-ray/dvd]
Beauty And The Beast [25th Anniversary Edition] [includes Digital Copy] [blu-ray/dvd]
Beauty And The Beast is widely considered the best animated Disney feature of the studio's 1980s/1990s renewal of the form. Based on the classic French fairy tale, it tells the story of Belle (voiced by Paige O'Hara), an intelligent young woman scorned by her townspeople for being a bookworm, weary of fighting off the advances of the arrogant Gaston (Richard White), and dreaming of escape. When her father gets lost in the woods and captured by the forbidding Beast (Robby Benson), a once-handsome prince turned into a monster by a witch, Belle goes off to rescue him. Taken with her, the Beast agrees to release Belle's father if she agrees to stay with him forever. Initially repulsed, Belle soon finds much to appreciate in the Beast's hidden, tender nature. The Beast's servants - a clock (David Ogden Stiers), a teapot (Angela Lansbury), and a candlestick (Jerry Orbach) - see Belle as their salvation: if the Beast and a woman fall in love before his 21st birthday, he will be free from the curse. The songs are first-class, the tale is told with sincerity but not sentimentality, and the characters of Belle and the Beast, complex individuals who defy stereotyping and change over the course of the story, are more three-dimensional than in most live-action movies. The eye-popping animation is beautifully rendered, and Beauty And The Beast certainly deserves its place amongst Disney's animated classics. In 2002, a special 89-minute edition of the film was released in IMAX theaters with the addition of a newly animated song, "Human Again."~Don Kaye

Home Improvement: Season 3 (dvd)
Home Improvement: Season 3 (dvd)
Tim Taylor (Tim Allen), self-assured authority on all things mechanical while starring in his own cable-TV series "Tool Time," continues to be an all-thumbs prophet without honor in his own home as Home Improvement enters its third season. With Tim's on-air "Tool Girl" Lisa having left for greener pastures (much like the actress who played her, Pamela Anderson), Debbe Dunning joins the regular cast as new Tool Girl Heidi, every bit as voluptuous as her predecessor. In another season-three development, Tim's "Tool Time" helper, Al (Richard Karn), a lifelong bachelor, begins yearning for a wife and kids on the occasion of his 35th birthday, thus Tim's helpful missus, Jill (Patricia Richardson), fixes Al up with her friend Ilene Markham (Sherry Hursey) - whereupon the overwhelmed Al proposes to Ilene during a "Tool Time" broadcast! Finally, Robert Picardo joins the cast as Tim's explosive new neighbor Joe Morton, as does Mariangela Pino as Joe's wife, Marie Morton. Even as Heidi, Ilene, and the Mortons come on board, another recurring character passes from the scene: Mr. Binford, Tim's boss, sponsor, and friend. The death of Binford culminates in a touching (but still very funny) episode in which Tim is afraid to cry upon hearing the news. For the third year in a row, the series' season finale finds Tim locked in deadly competition with rival do-it-yourself TV host Bob Vila, playing "himself" for the last time (on this show, at any rate!) in "The Great Race II." Also for the third year in a row, the series' lighting director, Donald A. Morgan, picked up an Emmy award. Home Improvement: Season 2 (dvd)
Home Improvement: Season 2 (dvd)
Inasmuch as Home Improvement had closed out its first season as the nation's fifth highest-rated TV program, neither its producers nor the ABC network saw the need to make anything but superficial changes for the series' second season on the air. ABC moved the program from its Tuesday night slot to an even better Wednesday-night berth, while one of the recurring characters, long-suffering "Tool Time" assistant Al Borland (Richard Karn), was promoted to "series regular" status. Otherwise, things remained pretty much the same as they'd been during season one. Protagonist Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) was still a fount of wisdom and expertise on his Detroit-based "do it yourself" cable TV series, "Tool Time" but a momument to ineptitude and insensitivity in his own home. Tim's wife, Jill (Patricia Richardson), now employed at a Detroit magazine, continued in her efforts to force culture and class upon her husband, all the while struggling to prevent him from "repairing" the household appliances. The Taylors' three sons - eleven-year-old Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), ten-year-old Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), and seven-year-old Mark (Taran Noah Smith) - persisted in causing trouble for themselves and their parents, though it was clear that there was a lot of love and mutual respect in the family's household. Of the remaining characters, ubiquitous neighbor Wilson (Earl Hindman) continued to dispense advice and philosophy to Tim and his brood - and also continued to remain a somewhat shadowy figure, never showing his face to anyone. Buxom "tool girl" Lisa (Pamela Anderson) was still a fixture of Tim's TV series, seldom saying much but certainly making a big impression whenever she wriggled into camera range. And in a new development, Maureen Binford (Vicki Lewis), ditzy daughter of "Tool Time"'s primary sponsor, became the series' producer, saddling Tim with all manners of idiotic format changes to boost his ratings. Moving from fifth to third place in the real-life ratings, Home Improvement was the second most popular sitcom of 1992-1993, beaten out only by another ABC offering, Roseanne. And for the second year in a row, an Emmy award was bestowed upon the series' director of photography, Donald A. Morgan~Hal Erickson

Lost: Season 4 [6 Discs] (dvd)
Lost: Season 4 [6 Discs] (dvd)
The survivors choose sides (Jack or Locke?) in Season 4, which spans nine days (Dec. 21-30, 2004) and opens with the castaways awaiting rescue by the offshore freighter crew. But when four strangers arrive on the island via helicopter, Jack (Matthew Fox) and others begin to question the intentions of their supposed rescuers: physicist Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies), cultural anthropologist Charlotte Lewis (Rebecca Mader), medium Miles Straume (Ken Leung) and pilot Frank Lapidus (Jeff Fahey). All four have a personal motive for coming to the island-and it soon becomes clear that rescuing the castaways is not their top priority. The primary objective of the freighter crew, sent by Charles Widmore (Alan Dale), is to capture Benjamin Linus (Michael Emerson) and bring him back alive. Some castaways, including Hurley (Jorge Garcia), Claire (Emilie de Ravin), and Sawyer (Josh Holloway), are troubled by Charlie's final warning about the freighter folk and decide to follow Locke (Terry O'Quinn), who has no interest in leaving the island, to the Dharma barracks. Sayid (Naveen Andrews) and Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) eventually find their way to the freighter, where Desmond deals with strange side effects related to his travels. Upon their arrival, they are surprised to see a familiar face among the crew members. Long-gone Flight 815 survivor Michael (Harold Perrineau) has infiltrated Widmore's freighter and is acting as a mole for Ben. Off the island, frequent flash-forwards (first employed during the series-changing Season 3 finale) reveal six castaways do finally make their way home. The identities of the Oceanic Six, as they're dubbed by the media, are gradually unveiled throughout the season, as are the lies they told regarding the fates of their fellow passengers. They may have made it home safely, but it's certainly not a happily ever after for the Oceanic Six. It soon becomes evident that the island is not yet finished with them, and neither is Ben~Karen Andzejewicz

Home Improvement: Season 5 (dvd)
Home Improvement: Season 5 (dvd)
A lot of water has passed under the bridge since do-it-yourselfer Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) hosted his first episode of cable TV's "Tool Time" in the opening season of Home Improvement. As the series enters its fifth season, Tim's son Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), ten years old when the series started, is just about to begin his first year in high school, where he is destined to excel as a hockey player (and also to lose his trademarked ponytail). Season five also introduces a new recurring character: Tim's new boss, Bud Harper (Charles Robinson), who takes an instant dislike to Tim's on-air assistant, Al (Richard Karn). Additionally, more screen time is allotted to Irene Markham (Sherry Hursey), Al's off-and-on fiancée. Down from third place in the 1994-1995 ratings, Home Improvement still closed at a strong seventh place at the climax of its fifth season. And, for the fifth year in a row, and Emmy award was bestowed upon the series' lighting director, Donald A. Morgan~Hal Erickson

Home Improvement: Season 4 (dvd)
Home Improvement: Season 4 (dvd)
Home Improvement enters its fourth season with do-it-yourself expert Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) continuing to hold court on the cable-TV show "Tool Time," but with his wife, Jill (Patricia Richardson), being laid off from her job. Jill subsequently decides to go back to college, opening a whole new realm of story possibilities as Tim begins to worry that his wife will become "too smart" for him (which, truth to tell, she's been all along!). In other developments, Blake Clark becomes a semi-regular in the role of Harry, a hardware-store owner whose heart attack at age 40 sets his contemporary Tim a-worrying about his own wellbeing. Eventually, Harry sells his store to Tim's TV assistant, Al (Richard Karn), who becomes so obsessive about his job that he nearly breaks up his engagement to Ilene Markham (Sherry Hursey). In previous years, Home Improvement's season finale would concern itself with the ongoing rivalry between Tim Taylor and real-life home-improvement expert Bob Vila. This year, however, the season's last episode involves Tim's always-heard, never-seen neighbor Wilson Wilson (Earl Hindman), who upon deciding to go on his first date in 20 years, falls into the clutches of irrepressible matchmaker Jill Taylor. Ranking number three in the Nielsen ratings throughout its fourth season, Home Improvement also brought home a fourth Emmy award for the series' lighting director, Donald A. Morgan~Hal Erickson

Golden Girls: The Complete Season Three [3 Discs] (dvd)
Golden Girls: The Complete Season Three [3 Discs] (dvd)
The third season of The Golden Girls continues to chronicle the adventures of four over-50 ladies who lived under the same Miami roof: widows Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan) and Rose Nylund (Betty White), divorcée Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur), and Dorothy's shamelessly outspoken mother, Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty). Season three opens with one of the series' many flashback episodes, "One for the Money," featuring Lynnie Greene in her recurring role as young Dorothy. The later episode "Blanche's Little Girl" marks the first series appearance of Blanche's daughter Rebecca, played this season by Shawn Schepps; "My Father, My Brother" finds comedian Bill Dana in the role of Sophia's brother Angelo, a priest; in "Mixed Blessing," Dorothy's son Michael (Scott Jacoby) announces his engagement to a black woman - which wouldn't bother Dorothy so much were it not for the fact that the woman is 20 years Michael's senior; and in another flashback show, "Mother's Day," viewers are given their one and only glimpse at Blanche's late mother, Margaret, played by Helen Kleeb. In other episodes, Rose does her part for world peace by writing letters to Reagan and Gorbachev (and guess which one of the two world leaders responds!); and McLean Stevenson guest stars as Ted Zbornak, brother of Dorothy's redoubtable ex-husband, Stan (Herb Edelman). Rated the fourth most popular TV series in America during its third season, The Golden Girls also did all right by itself at Emmy award time, with Bea Arthur and Estelle Getty both winning statuettes~Hal Erickson

Golden Girls: The Complete Fifth Season [3 Discs] (dvd)
Golden Girls: The Complete Fifth Season [3 Discs] (dvd)
The Golden Girls begins its fifth season minus several of its longtime writers, but with the basic cast intact: Bea Arthur as Dorothy, Betty White as Rose, Rue McClanahan as Blanche, and Estelle Getty as Dorothy's mom, Sophia, four very mature ladies living under the same roof in a small Miami neighborhood. The season opens with the two-part "Sick and Tired," another crossover episode featuring characters from the Golden Girls spin-off series Empty Nest, in this case Richard Mulligan as Dr. Harry Weston and Park Overall as Laverne Todd. The later episode "Not Another Monday" marks the second appearance of Blanche's daughter Rebecca, here played by Debra Engle, replacing the previous season's Shawn Schepps. "Dancing in the Dark" introduces Harold Gould in the recurring role of Rose's boyfriend Miles Webber, a shy, retiring type who will later turn out to have a most turbulent "secret life." In "Ebb Tide," Sheree North makes the second of two appearances as Blanche's spoiled younger sister Virginia. And in the two-part finale, the girls somewhat incredibly prepare for a visit from the first President George Bush - who, of course, does not appear on-camera, but is represented by an offscreen voice provided by master mimic Harry Shearer. As in its fourth season, Golden Girls ranked as America's sixth most popular series throughout its fifth year on the air~Hal Erickson
