Flower Power
Flower Power
This text brings together a wide variety of illustrations of the cut flower in the history of European fine and decorative art since 1500. It explains their symbolic meanings and demonstrates the response that flowers evoke in us all. The representation of non-European traditions, such as those of China, Japan and the Indian sub-continent, enriches the visual material and illustrates the differences between faiths and cultures. A series of thematic chapters follow a broadly chronological arrangement of works of fine and decorative art, manuscripts and books. The early symbolism and mythologies associated with flowers are illustrated through detailed medieval manuscripts. Illustrations of paintings, textiles, furniture, silver, and ceramics focus on individual flowers through the course of the book.

Richard Serra
Richard Serra
Richard Serra is considered by many to be the most important sculptor of the postwar period. The essays in this volume cover the complete span of Serra's work to date -- from his first experiments with materials and processes through his early films and site works to his current series of "torqued ellipses." There is a special emphasis on those moments when Serra extended aesthetic convention and/or challenged political authority, as in the famous struggle with the General Services Administration over the site-specific piece Tilted Arc.October Files October Files is a new series of inexpensive paperback books. Each book will address a body of work by an artist of the postwar period who has altered our understanding of art in significant ways and prompted a critical literature that is sophisticated and sustained. Each book will trace not only the development of an important oeuvre but also the construction of the critical discourse inspired by it. The series editors are Hal Foster, Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Annette Michelson, Yve-Alain Bois, and Rosalind Krauss.

Cezanne's Watercolors
Cezanne's Watercolors
Cezanne's watercolors exhibit not only kaleidoscopic arrays of translucent color but also very light graphite pencil lines that contrast strikingly with the soft watery touches of color. These drawn lines have been largely overlooked in previous studies of Cezanne's watercolors. In this ravishing book, Matthew Simms argues that it was the dialogue between drawing and painting--the movement between the pencil and the paintbrush--that attracted Cezanne to watercolor. Watercolor allowed Cezanne to express what he termed his "sensations" in two distinct modes that become a record of his shifting and spontaneous responses to his subject. Combining close visual analysis and examination of historical context, Simms focuses on the counterpoint of drawing and color in Cezanne's watercolors over the course of his career and as viewed in relation to his oil paintings. More than a tool for sketching or preparing for oil paintings, Simms contends, watercolor was a unique means of expression in its own right that allowed Cezanne to combine in one place the two otherwise opposed mediums of drawing and painting.

Ford Madox Brown
"Ford Madox Brown: The Unofficial Pre-Raphaelite" is a major volume which throws new light on this important artist, who though never officially a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, was however a central figure within it. Brian Grimwood
Brian Grimwood
"Brian Grimwood: The Man Who Changed the Look of British Illustration" is the first book on renowned illustrator and artist Brian Grimwood, whose work has been featured across the board in advertising, design and publishing industries. His free and fluid style first characterized the visual culture of the 1960s in iconic images such as those used in magazines including Nova, Image, Playboy, Nave, Forum, New Scientist and Economist. As his career progressed Grimwood's illustrations became more and more synonymous with British and Western popular culture and advertising, as evinced, for example, by his covers and identities for the Radio Times, Faber&Faber, WH Smith and Johnny Walker, amongst many others. With an Introduction by Brian Grimwood's friend and peer, Sir Peter Blake, this beautifully illustrated book is the first complete overview of Grimwood's work, and serves to further reinforce his fundamental contribution to the changing face of illustration since the 1960s.

Education
Education
This book will be an original and indispensable resource for all who believe in the importance of art in the wider educational realm. Framing the recent "educational turn" in the arts within a broad historical and social context, this anthology raises fundamental questions about how and what should be taught in an era of distributive rather than media-based practices. Among the many sources and arguments traced here is second-wave feminism, which questioned dominant notions of personal and institutional freedom as enacted through art teaching and practice. Similarly, education-based responses by the art community to the catastrophes of World War II and postcolonial conflict critically inform contemporary art confronting the interrelationships of education, power, market capitalism, and - as Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri describe it - the global condition of war. These writings by artists, philosophers, educators, poets, and activists center on three recurring and interrelated themes: the notion of "indiscipline" in theories and practices that challenge boundaries of all kinds; the present and future role of the art school; and the turn to pedagogy as medium in a diverse range of recent projects. Other writings address such issues as instrumentalism and control, liberation and equality, the production and the politics of culture, and the roots of research-based practice and experimental participatory works. Artists surveyed include Anni Albers, Josef Albers, Pawel Althamer, Ricardo Basbaum, Joseph Beuys, Tania Bruguera, Lygia Clark, Luca Frei, Liam Gillick, Group Material, Thomas Hirschhorn, Dave Hullfish Bailey, Mike Kelley, Darcy Lange, Maria Pask, Lia Perjovschi, Bridget Riley, Paul Rooney, Martha Rosler, Edgar Schmitz, Judith Scott, Andreas Siekmann, Wendelien van Oldenborgh, Carey Young and Artur Zmijewski. Writers include Jorella Andrews, Roy Ascott, Dennis Atkinson, Stuart Bailey, Lars Bang Larsen, Carol Becker, Caroline Benn, Claire Bishop, Pierre Bourdieu, Luis Camnitzer, Pen Dalton , Paul Dash, Dinah Dossor, Jimmie Durham, Thierry de Duve, Elliot W. Eisner, Alex Farquharson, Harrell Fletcher, Andrea Fraser, Paulo Freire, Henry A. Giroux, Janna Graham, George E. Hein, Pablo Helguera, Tom Holert, Allan Kaprow, Vincent Katz, Mary Kelly, Grant H. Basquiat and the Bayou
Basquiat and the Bayou
Born in Brooklyn to a Haitian father and Puerto-Rican mother, Jean-Michel Basquiat was deeply interested in Afro-Atlantic culture and he drew upon his heritage in many of his highly acclaimed paintings. This book looks closely --- for the first time --- at Basquiat's southern-themed paintings. The paintings in this book are filled with references to the history and culture of the South, a place the artist visited sparingly. Insightful essays discuss the importance of Basquiat's work in relation to a subject that occupied his attention throughout his career. Published in association with Prospect New Orleans.

Russian Textiles
Russian Textiles
"Russian Textiles" showcases the gorgeous cotton textiles that were created and manufactured in Russia and exported to Central Asia from 1850 to 1950. The Muslims in these Central Asian countries - Uzbeks, Tadjiks, Farsi, Turkomans, etc. - incorporated the brightly patterned fabrics into their clothing, particularly the linings of their robes and household items. An introductory essay describes the fascinating history of this influence of Middle Eastern and Western aesthetic styles and is illustrated with vintage photography from the turn of the 20th century as well as images of the robes and other articles that were lined and embellished with the beautiful cloth. More than 150 fantastic patterns from a variety of periods and styles, from late Victorian to Art Nouveau to Art Deco, are featured, making "Russian Textiles" a book every fashion, interior and product designer, craftsperson and artist will want in their inspiration library.

Under the Big Black Sun
Under the Big Black Sun
The years between Richard Nixon's resignation and Ronald Reagan's election as president were difficult ones for America. Artists in particular were sensitive to enormous divisions in the country's moods and beliefs. Examining art-making in California during a tumultuous transitional period, this catalogue accompanying a remarkable exhibition features approximately 125 California artists working in a wide array of media: from installation art to representational painting, from conceptual art to performance art, and from video to photography. Penetrating essays by leading art historians, critics, and curators explore the history and development of pluralist art practices throughout California; the artists' responses to questions about race, gender, politics and war; and the emergence of new movements and trends such as punk, post-studio art and postmodernism. Under the Big Black Sun: California Art 1974-1981 is part of Pacific Standard Time, an initiative of the Getty.

The Eternal Letter
The Eternal Letter
The fiftieth anniversary of Helvetica, the most famous of all sans serif typefaces, was celebrated with an excitement unusual in the staid world of typography and culminated in the release of the first movie ever made starring a typeface. Yet Helvetica's fifty-year milestone pales in comparison with the two thousandth anniversary in 2014 of Trajan's Column and its famous inscription -- the preeminent illustration of the classical Roman capital letter. For, despite the modern ascendance of the sans serif, serif typefaces, most notably Times Roman, still dominate printed matter and retain a strong presence in screen-based communication. The Eternal Letter is a lavishly illustrated examination of the enduring influence of, and many variations on, the classical Roman capital letter. The Eternal Letter offers a series of essays by some of the most highly regarded practitioners in the fields of typography, lettering, and stone carving. They discuss the subtleties of the classical Roman capital letter itself, different iterations of it over the years, and the work of famous typographers and craftsmen. The essays cover such topics as efforts to calculate a geometric formulation of the Trajan letters; the recalculation of their proportions by early typefounders; the development and astonishing popularity of Adobe Trajan; type and letter designs by Father Edward M. Catich, Frederic W. Goudy, Eric Gill, Jan van Krimpen, Hermann Zapf, Matthew Carter, and others; the influence of Trajan in Russia; and three generations of lettercarvers at the John Stevens Shop in Newport, Rhode Island. Essays about modern typefaces -- including Matinia, Senatus, and Penumbra -- are contributed by the designers of these typefaces. Contributors John and Nicholas Benson, Frank E. Blokland, Matthew Carter, Ewan Clayton, Lance Hidy, Jost Hochuli, Jonathan Hoefler, Richard Kindersley, Scott-Martin Kosofsky, Gerry Leonidas, Martin Majoor, Steve Matteson, Gregory MacNaughton, James Mosley, Tom Perkins, Yves Peters, Ryan L. The Chrysler Building
The Chrysler Building
The Chrysler Building is surely the jewel in the crown of New York City's skyline. Completed in 1930, the 77-story Art Deco skyscraper--the tallest in the world at the time it was finished--quickly became the symbol of big city glamour, excitement, and style. Its cloud-piercing spire and gleaming, steel-clad ornament depicting gargoyles, hubcaps, and the winged helmets of Mercury came to represent the thrill of the Machine Age at its most exuberant. But, until now, this magnificent building has also been one of the least documented and studied, a simple result of the fact that there were no known archives relating to its design or construction. This material was lost in the decades following its completion, or so everyone believed, until author David Stravitz discovered a box of negatives on the floor of a defunct stock photo company, just days before they were to be shipped off for silver reclamation. The never-before-seen photographs, reproduced as sumptuous duotones in this oversize book, illustrate the day-by-day construction of this American icon. The photographs were taken by professional photo companies hired to document the construction of the building. In so doing, they also captured the day-to-day life taking place on the streets and in the environs of the Chrysler Building in exquisite detail. This book beautifully illustrates the history of one of the most important buildings in New York as it emerged from street level to spire.
