Every month we compile a list of all the pieces, trends and brands we’re wearing, loving and adding to our wish lists. From everyday essentials that have been keeping us looking fresh for the new season to statement pieces we’re saving our pennies for, here’s everything on the SC radar for October…

Checks, stripes, florals and animal prints – this season is all about print and pattern. We’ve been shopping for checked jackets and cool jacquard trousers, boho floral maxi dresses and leopard-print minis.

Of course, the biker jacket is an October staple and due to this month’s strange and changeable weather, we’ve not left the house without ours. Plus, it’s boot season and there’s not a single pair of autumn boots that doesn’t go with a leather jacket.

When it comes to accessories we’ve been loving tan leather in the form of shoes, bags and belts and layered charm necklaces in warm gold and rose-gold tones.

Simple jumper dresses and men’s shirts in autumnal hues have also been our jam this month – think textural pieces in fine cord, denim and pink chambray.

Wave goodbye to sunshine yellow and millennial pink because a new season is here and it’s all about muted, earthy tones for AW18. Cool autumnal hues include burnt orange, sandy oat tones and of course, olive green.

A staple for this time of year a green military-style jacket is a sure way to lend your look a touch of effortless cool – see the likes of Kate Moss, Olivia Palermo and Anine Bing for outfit inspiration.

Olive green is one of those hues that goes with just about everything in your wardrobe, from casual jeans and shirts to sleek dresses and statement prints.

Team a green jacket or shirt with leather trousers and a cool pair of snake-print boots or put a twist on the tone by pairing classic camo with blush-pink sneakers and accessories for a contemporary colour clash.

The perfect colour to invest in for autumn through to winter, olive green is set to become our go-to from now until the New Year.

It’s easy to see why the teddy coat has become the cover-up of choice for influencers and editors alike – not only is it incredibly warm, it also looks effortlessly cool with anything.   So, when the temperature drops below freezing and you don’t want to sacrifice your style, you know exactly what piece to invest in. Here’s how to wear autumn’s cosiest coat like a street style star.

Maxi

Spotted on the runway at Giambattista Valli and Max Mara, long teddy coats are the ultimate way to beat the cold – and look super chic while doing it. These styles look best worn with skinny jeans and flat loafers, à la Giorgia Tordini.

Supersized

Hailey Baldwin and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have both been snapped in oversized teddy coats, and we can’t think of a better way to stay warm when the winter weather hits. Layer yours over leather leggings or give it a sporty spin with this season’s chunky sneakers.

Cropped

Shorter styles are just as cosy – influencers Camille Charrière and Jessie Bush are both fans. Choose a camel hue and try pairing yours with high-rise black trousers (extra points for patent styles) and ankle boots.

London is known for being the most experimental of all of the Fashion Week cities – with so many up-and-coming designers on the schedule, there’s always a collection to suit every style. Now that autumn is upon us, we’ve rounded up the top trends we spotted at LFW that you’re about to see everywhere...

Corduroy

Meet the most unexpected trend of the season: Roland Mouret, Erdem and Emilia Wickstead gave corduroy a whole new look with pretty shades and feminine silhouettes – try a midi skirt or flared trousers to take it into the evening.

Sequins

Sequinned pieces for party season may not sound groundbreaking, but the LFW runways were awash with shimmering designs. Look to Temperley London, Halpern and Toga for inspiration, and try an ‘80s-inspired shape to tick off two trends in one.

Tartan

Checks were all over the AW18 runways, but London’s had a punk feel to them. Simone Rocha and House of Holland both showed head-to-toe tartan looks, and we predict you’re about to see a whole lot more of them on your favourite influencers.

Rainbow stripes

Christopher Bailey’s final collection for Burberry was a tribute to PRIDE, but it wasn’t the only show that was dominated by rainbow hues – Ashish and Osman also presented bold multicolored pieces, from striped trousers to embellished dresses.

Blanket coats

Perhaps the most practical trend for autumn, blanket dressing was a key theme throughout the London shows. From Rokanda’s checked wraps to Delpozo’s furry asymmetric styles, these cosy cover-ups will be the coolest way to stay warm this winter.

Okay, so checks may be nothing new – they’ve been a staple in autumn wardrobes for as long as we can remember – but this season, street style stars have gone wild for them. From heritage houndstooth to Prince of Wales and plaid, there’s not one single check that wasn’t seen on the AW18 runway.

There are endless ways to wear this trend, so we’ve done the hard work for you and picked out our favourite checked pieces for the new season – here’s how to wear them...

Go monochrome

If head-to-toe patterns aren’t your thing, make like influencer Lucy Williams and keep the look low-key with black checked trousers – keep them cropped and team them with a camel knit and ankle boots for a modern take.

Keep it classic

Fact: a checked wool coat or blazer is always going to look cool. Our tip? Choose a slightly oversized silhouette for a look that feels more fresh.

Suit up

Checked tailoring was a key trend on the AW runways – see Balenciaga and Stella McCartney. If you’re going for a suit, just be sure to choose a relaxed fit and balance the look with sneakers or slides.

Ready to shop for the new season but overwhelmed by all the trends? Don’t worry – we’ve rounded up the best looks from London Fashion Week, along with our favourite AW18 pieces.
Modern military

It’s not unusual for military pieces to appear on the AW runway, but Belstaff’s collection was a fresh take on the trend. We loved the printed hoodies worn with double-breasted coats and zipped cargo pants.

Reworked classics

For AW18, Burberry gave its iconic pieces a contemporary update: see the oversized trench coats, rainbow logo-embroidered sweatshirts and checked baseball caps.

Tonal tailoring

Loved for its pared-back minimalism, Joseph’s autumn collection did not disappoint. A standout look consisted of clean brown tailoring worn with a sharp camel coat.

Utility cool

JW Anderson’s show combined menswear and womenswear, but each had an effortless utilitarian feel. We predict the graphic knit sweaters and relaxed khaki pants will be an instant hit.

Industrial outerwear

Not only were the coats and jackets at Christopher Raeburn incredibly cool, they were also constructed from recycled materials. Look out for the checked wool pieces made from Russian navy blankets.

Asymmetric shapes

Chalayan’s deconstructed designs made ordinary wardrobe staples feel completely unique – check out the cut-out trousers and cleverly folded coats in the line-up.

Heritage checks

You can always count on Margaret Howell to deliver timeless pieces that will transcend seasons – for example, the checked shirts and Prince of Wales tailoring seen on the runway.

Retro refresh

‘70s references could be spotted throughout Oliver Spencer’s show, but in the most understated way: see the corduroy and velvet trousers and shearling jackets.

Sports luxe

Sportswear has become a fixture on the runway, and it’s not going anywhere fast. Band of Outsiders mixed retro tracksuits with smart tailoring for a fresh take on the trend.

Go graphic

Bold logo prints are still dominating the street style circuit, and it looks like they’re sticking around for another season. Cottweiler’s final look was an oversized T-shirt embroidered with the Natural History Museum’s name – also the location of the label's show.

It’s official: the colour of autumn 2018 is undisputedly orange. Whether you rock a neon shade or a rich vintage-inspired hue, orange is the cheerful champion of our cool-weather line-ups…

Successfully wearing the colour is, however, easier said than done. It’s a bold shade and one that’s best sported with an all-or-nothing approach. We looked to our editors for a few tips on how to nail the autumnal trend sweeping Instagram.

Oversized

A statement colour calls for a statement silhouette so go big or go home with this one, literally. Think oversized duster coats and puffer styles, flared or wide-leg trousers and boxy shirts and tees. A maxi dress or skirt is always a winner too.

Utilitarian

The sporty, utility-inspired trend is big for AW18 so think less ‘70s corduroy and more futuristic crepe and lamé. Try sporting simple culottes with a cropped metallic jacket or opt for a simple military-inspired look with a button-down shirt and straight-leg trousers in bright orange tones.

Androgynous

Gender fluidity is back and here to stay this season. Rock your orange pieces in simple silhouettes and cool, understated layers. Give sports-luxe a go with an orange varsity jacket, trending camouflage prints and matching chunky-soled sneakers.

Colour blocked

Brave enough to try head-to-toe orange? Be sure to stay consistent with your choice of shade. Whether you opt for a pop-bright tone or a pale peachy orange, match your ensemble exactly to nail this season’s hottest colour trend.

Before you squeeze three different handbags into a suitcase for your summer holidays, consider this… Opting for one bag that complements every outfit in your vacay line-up and leaves you hand free is far less hassle.

Does such a bag exist? Of course it does and it’s been dominating the catwalks since last autumn. The belt bag is a holiday staple that goes with just about everything.

Don’t believe us? Try styling it with denim shorts and a cute top, or a swimsuit and platform espadrilles by the pool. Put yours to the test with heeled sandals and a wrap skirt or team it with a simple linen trousers and tee ensemble. See? It works with everything.

We’ve selected our favourite styles for every budget, so whether you’re heading to a pool party in Ibiza or jetting off to Paris for a mini city break, these pieces will hold all your essentials and ensure you’re looking 100 for the summer.
