So part of resolution month is not only deciding to give up on a bad habit, toxic people, change careers or simply hit the gym. Sometimes you want to start with the simple things that will give you an instant mood lift. So what's a better way to welcome the New Year than by updating your surroundings? We have rounded up the best hacks you can use this year to make your home a wonderful living space.

LIGHTING

We don't say this enough but you may be surprised at what a little lighting can do to set the mood. Opt for a big chandelier-like lighting at the centre of a big room and use small decorative pieces to give a bit of character to a cute corner on top of your bookshelf or your reading table for example.

BEDDING

A good night's sleep will make a huge difference to your lifestyle, so why not invest in a quality bed and mattress to pursue it. This year it's all about being grounded so the trend is to go for a low bed frame that is closer to the floor - in line with a down-to-earth attitude to get you through the New Year.

BATHROOM

If you want to truly give your bathroom a makeover you can do it simply by changing the little things such a the shower curtain, the towels, a nice frame and the glass where you keep your toothbrush. This year go for the bold and sophisticated ultra violet colour which is the Pantone colour of the year - that will match amazingly with any bathroom decor.

DINING

In the name of affordable makeovers, we suggest that you go for affordable china, glasses and placemats in order to give character to your dining table. You don't have to go all out on a new dining table when you can update it by throwing a great tablecloth over it. While you're in the dining room why not invest in a pair of cool speakers and truly set the mood.

We’re about midway through the festive season and after weeks of late nights, dehydrating drinks and wintery weather, our skin's looking a bit, well, dull. It isn’t even Christmas yet and with New Year’s Eve coming up as well, we need to get our skin back to it's best pronto. Thank goodness we can slap on a face mask and pamper ourselves over the weekend.

Want to glow? There’s a mask for that. Plump? Ditto. Resurface? Yep- you get the picture. Whatever your skin type, a face mask is a wonderful skin-reviving solution whether you DIY it or hotfoot it to a spa. Peeling them off your face section-by-section is oddly satisfying and always read the label or ask for the ingredients before use.

Shop our top picks to revive partied out skin below.

KIMSU is putting Berlin’s jewellery scene on the map. Launched there in October 2017 after less than a year of development, founders Sue Woo Kim and Roberto Bertinetti deliver sophisticated handcrafted jewellery but they also strive to empower women and be respectful to the environment as they do so. Every KIMSU piece works on different levels: they’re designed to be aesthetically pleasing and to help the woman wearing it find her strength and confidently get in touch with her feminine side. The original and sometimes abstract geometric forms of the earrings, necklaces and rings imitate strong symbols of strength and have an intriguing architectural air. And only recycled silver is used by the self-described ethical and socially responsible brand, along with the finest coloured gemstones and a unique and exclusive shade of gold.

KIMSU definitely plays to and expresses its founders’ strengths and passions as well. Creative Director Kim received a gold ring for her first birthday, as per Korean tradition, which sparked her personal passion for jewellery; and her interior design and architecture background is very evident in the visual aesthetic, graphics and the jewellery itself which she designs. Business and marketing is Bertinetti's forte and focus as brand CEO following years of working in digital marketing and being part of an entrepreneurial family. Based on the belief that the tiniest symbols and gestures can ignite a passion within, dynamic triangles, circles and rectangles all star in KIMSU’s standout debut collection. We’ve got our eye on one of the layered circle rings or the dramatic drop earrings we’ll be tucking our hair behind our ears to show off.

We’re predicting big things for KIMSU so shop our edit of key styles below to be able to smugly say you owned it first.

Chainmail made its latest epic comeback in the finale of the Versace Spring Summer 18 show back in September. Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen, five of the original supermodels, dazzled in shimmering gold chainmail gowns and strutted down the runaway hand-in-hand with Donatella Versace in tribute to the designer’s late brother Gianni. Besides breaking the internet as the most instagrammed moment of fashion month, gold or ‘goddess’ chainmail entered the spotlight.

It was Paco Rabanne who helped popularise the fierce, futuristic fabric in the ’60s as part of the Space Age movement, although none of his dresses were as naked as Paris Hilton’s at her 21st birthday party in 2002. The heiress’ cowl neck silver chainmail mini dress was previously pop culture’s most enduring image of chainmail, chicly recreated by Kendall Jenner at her own 21st birthday celebrations last year. Defined as a flexible armour of small metal rings linked together, allowing tantalising peeks of skin, it’s the perfect attention-seeking material for a New Year Eve’s party outfit. No-one will be able to tear their eyes away from you as you shimmer your way around the room. Now that the age-defying supers have proved that chainmail doesn’t have to be silver or only worn by pretty young things, try it out. It’s a much cooler way to do metallics, glittering without actual glitter specks, and there’s a rainbow of shades now available.

Check out our inspiration gallery above and then pick your most flattering cut or piece from our ready-to-shop edit below.

You’ll bring in the new year with a bang!

There's a certain personal element when buying a piece of jewellery for someone. Selecting jewellery is completely dependant on individual style and rarely adheres to any rules or current trends. Although we may be prone to buy a funky earring like a bold coloured tassel number when it comes to precious jewellery aiming for elegant and timeless is the best practice. After examining the style of the person that will wear the gift choose on modern versus classic.

Go for tassel, chandelier earrings or statement architectural earrings to be completely on trend for this season. If trends are not important then opt for a classic drop earring or a pair of classic pearl earrings. Go for a matching necklace or choose a necklace with multiple layers for a nonchalant effect that is oh-so-chic. Opt for an array of bold and colourful bracelets for your maximalist friend or conversely go for a classic silver bracelet for the minimalist. And while you're at it why not get it personalised for bonus points!

In our never-ending search for the ultimate party accessory, we stumbled upon a bag that's making waves across social media as the new style of it-bags. Although this would be one of the chicest ways to rock Christmas evening attire, this specific accessory is completely wearable with a pair of jeans and a blazer. The design and embellishments amp the level up to a true decorative piece that can elevate any outfit - daywear or evening wear. If the summer past was an ode to rustic totes, bamboo style creations (thanks, CULT GAIA) and mini velvet bodybags (see Gucci) this time it's time to bring out the pearl tote.

You may not see it as the most practical of the bunch but it's definitely got the retro aesthetic down to a T. The beaded bag was inspired by Shrimps Antonia bag, as well as the pink-faux-fur Graham clutch with beaded embellishments. Sasah Alexandra's multicolour version, as well as Vanina's cult Camelia crossbody, are adorned by the fashion elite: From Leandra Medine to Pandora Sykes, Camille Chariere Maria Bernard and Laura Jackson, it seems that everyone wants a piece of the vintage trend.

Want it too? Scroll down below for our exclusive selection of beaded bags.

Purists are an eclectic bunch. They don't necessarily side with the opinion of minimalists where you may not even be able to buy them a Xmas gift (they won't accept it), but they share an affinity for simple, quality items that bring value to their life without cluttering it. If you're going for clothing opt for a muted colour palette of whites, cremes, pastel colours and uncomplicated silhouettes. Think of a wardrobe similar to Jennifer Lopez's all-white ensemble in the movie "Maid in Manhattan". A lush white coat, white trousers and a chic rollneck pair them with a beaded bag that is turning heads lately.

For a truly beautiful winter outfit, you can get them a beautiful shearling coat a fluffy scarf, an elegant hat and leather gloves. Mansur Gavriel AW17 and Chanel Resort 2018 are your go-to collections for purist inspiration in style and aesthetic. The purist looks for an uncomplicated life and that includes life at home. You can gift them a pair of sleek petite speakers or elegant pc accessories that are both stylish and practical. Believe us, the purist will be pleased.

Gadgets and their accessories are often expensive and therefore perfect wish list fodder, which is why everyone becomes a bit of a techie come Christmas. After all, there’s no better time to upgrade your headphones, replace your laptop/cables, or finally order the games console + games you’ve been eyeing up all year with so many unmissable deals around. You can even personalise the electronics you already have with covers and coloured keys, find gloves to wear while using your touchscreen, and getting one of those phone cases with an added battery is a no brainer and lifesaver for anyone constantly running out of juice.

With notable technological advances this year from new phones from Apple and Google with superior features, to Amazon’s intelligent personal assistant Echo aka Alexa, and ultra-stylish smart watches, shop them while they’re new and hot because they’ll only make life more efficient. Whether you’re gifting your loved ones or yourself, think about which gadgets would be most useful and prioritise your purchases that way.

Our expert edit below is a fab place to start!

Wet n' Wild is launching new eyeshadow palettes and I'm very excited! I love that one palette has warm shades and the other one, cool tones, there's a nice variation between shimmer and matte shades and the design of the actual palette is very cool! There's a trend of affordable brands lacking on good quality eyeshadow palette, but I have great hopes for wet and wild. You guys have a current favourite drugstore palette?
