It's official: summer is here and whether you're prepping with turmeric-infused smoothies and SoulCycle sessions or simply relaxing into the new season, it’s time for a fresh approach to your beauty routine. We’ve put together a few tips on how to prep your body for the beach, ensuring you feel cool, comfortable and confident in your bikini this summer…

How to prep your skin

Start with regular body brushing or exfoliating with mitts and scrubs. Smooth along the backs of the legs, elbows and knees. Stimulate your circulation and improve the appearance of your skin tone while sloughing away any dead skin and getting a fresh glow on. Next, moisturize your skin by applying a hydrating body oil. Focus on any dry areas and use a luxe night cream to nourish your skin.

Incorporate a decent sunblock or primer with SPF into your beauty routine. This is essential for protecting the delicate skin on your face from harmful sun damage in the summer months. For hair removal, if that’s your jam,  be sure to exfoliate beforehand for an even, long-lasting finish. Book your wax at least 72 hours before you hit the beach to allow time for your skin to settle.

How to prep your nails

Try an intensive pedicure with a callus-peel if necessary. Those feet could do with a  rejuvenating session after a long winter. Apply moisturizer to the bottoms of your feet to prolong your pedi for the days that follow. As for the shade, pick a hue that contrasts your skin and makes your tan pop.

How to top up your tan

Whether you're booked a spray tan appointment or are tanning at home make sure to exfoliate and moisturize to prevent streaks and always book your spray tan a day before heading to the beach. If you're at home apply your formula with a mitt to avoid staining your hands and distribute the color more evenly. Wash your hands immediately and wait for at least ten minutes before putting on clothes.

Now that summer’s here, we’re investing in breezy warm-weather ensembles to see in the new season in style. Vacay-ready dresses and denim shorts in summer hues call for bronzed limbs but we’re not about to risk sun damage by hitting the poolside sans SPF. Instead, we’ll be opting for a quality self tan to achieve that healthy summer glow without exposing skin to harmful UV rays.

Want to get the glow? Just follow our simple tips for achieving the perfect summer tan without compromising on your skin’s health…

Choose wisely

Opting for a dark self tan might seem like a quick fix, but your glow is far more likely to look natural if you invest in a subtler shade. Make sure your skin tone matches whatever you pick and opt for something similar to a product you already enjoy using

For example, if lotion is your jam then a tanning cream could be for you. If you prefer something more lightweight on your skin, go for a spray or mousse. Work with whatever feels comfortable for you.

Exfoliate

Be sure to prep your skin before applying your self tan. Use a quality exfoliating scrub in the shower to brush away dry skin and get your skin feeling clean, fresh and ready for application. Using bronzing products after exfoliating means your glow will last much longer.

Layer it

Avoid the temptation to pile on the product and instead, apply a light layer a day at a time to build up a natural-looking colour. This way, you can exfoliate any dry patches and moisturise in between applications to keep your skin soft, supple and happy.

Glow up

Finish off your tanning routine with a shimmering bronzer – we love a gold-toned powder or simple contouring kit to highlight that golden glow. Add a little definition to your cheekbones and décolletage and you’ll be ready to rock that summer dress in no time.

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start to the summer. This makes it the perfect time to tap into a few of summer’s hottest trends. Hopefully you'll be spending the weekend in the sun, enjoying the parades and festivities.

We've put together four fool-proof looks that will match all your Memorial Day Weekend plans, whether you're attending your first pool party of the season, or jetting off on a reviving city break. Here's what to wear on Memorial Day Weekend...

For a city break

Whether it's Hamptons or Montauk you'll need an array of resort-ready separates to wear from the beach to the bar until the early hours of the morning. Snag a patterned jumpsuit and pair it with espadrilles, a pair of sunnies and an on-trend wicker bag to carry your essentials.

For a pool party

For glamping, cookouts  or simple poolside tanning you need a cool get-up. Show off in a  bikini in bold hues, pair with equally eye-grabbing sneakers, denim shorts and toss on a denim jacket for extra flair.

For a daytrip

If you're headed south for wine o'clock in Napa Valley you've got to do it in style. Sport a linen dress, red sandals, an oversized leather bag and a fedora straw hat that will keep you looking and feeling cool in warm weather.

Which of these Memorial Day looks will you be wearing? Browse our edit below to recreate them at home...

I would name this photo: Brothers of Winter. An image that celebrates the beginning of the month of December. I also love how platinum blonde hair looks on pale people. But in my opinion, this hair colour looks best on girls and boys that have a very cool undertone in their skin tone. When boys or girls that fake tanning their body dyed their hair with this colour, it can look a lit bit off or wash out their entire complexion I think. Even though self-tanning products and fake tans, in general, have received some questionable reviews over the years, they're undeniably the quickest and safest way to acquire that much desired sunkissed glow. It seems that the problem lies with applying the products the right way i.e. in cleaned exfoliated skin, and choosing products that are applied and absorbed equally. The ones that are not prone leaving us with cringy orange spots, or for that matter, any orange remains.

But don't worry, we have you covered! From gradual tans, to express tan in 60 minutes, gels, foams and sprays read below for our edit for the ten best self-tans around this summer!

Extra tip: Don't forget to wash your hands as soon as you have applied the product - No one likes tanned palms.

You want to wear that LBD to a day out but can’t because of uneven skin tone? Girlfriend, the struggle is real. The good news: we have just the solution for you. Our homemade remedies will ensure the length of your dress will never be a problem.

Egg whites and honey pack
This mixture is not only great for de-tanning but also efficient to tighten your skin. Try it out!

 Aloe vera gel with lemon
We all know how good aloe vera is for the skin. This mixture will bring results in less than two weeks if applied regularly to the damaged skin. Aloe vera is also excellent in providing the shine your skin needs.

 Oatmeal de-tan pack
Oatmeal works as an excellent scrub. You can add lemon juice, rose water or simply diluted milk or curd to it to form a paste, which can then be applied to the tanned area and viola!

Lemon or potato juice
These are both effective de-tanning agents and a little juice can go a long way. You can choose to mix the two but make sure to perform a patch test in case of allergies.

Tomato pulp
Finally, the regular application of tomato pulp for 15 minutes until it’s completely dried can help de-tan the skin. Once the pulp is all tried, wet your hands and massage your face in circular motion as if scrubbing the dried pulp off your face. Then wash your face with luke warm water and pat dry.

Additionally, you could take some advice from our fav YouTubers who have more remedies to share with you. But if you’re too busy to be making your own packs, try the readymade mixtures from out list down below.

As much as we love to hate them, no-one can deny the Kardashian-Jenner clan always look DAMN good, whether naked (hey Kim) or fully clothed.

Now for the first time, their make-up artist, Joyce Bonelli has revealed the secret behind their flawless look- 3D tanning. Think of it as 2016's answer to contouring and you'll realise how huge this is about to be.

This three step at home tanning process helps to sculpt, silhouette and add a shimmer to your skin- in other words, look incredible without hitting the treadmill and living off dust. Where do we sign up!?

Speaking to Femail, Joyce and Cocoa Brown founder, Marissa Carter share their tips on how to glow like a pro...

1. Apply a one hour tanning mousse with a mitt and leave on according to how bronzed you want to be. One hour for a light tan, two hours for a medium tan and three hours for a dark tan.
2. Next, apply bronzing gel to the face and body to sculpt. Using a foundation brush, put a small amount of gel on the areas where you would normally get sun on your face to give you a very natural look.
3. Finally, apply shimmering body oil to all the dry areas (face and body) to give your skin a subtle luminosity.
