Okay, so checks may be nothing new – they’ve been a staple in autumn wardrobes for as long as we can remember – but this season, street style stars have gone wild for them. From heritage houndstooth to Prince of Wales and plaid, there’s not one single check that wasn’t seen on the AW18 runway.

There are endless ways to wear this trend, so we’ve done the hard work for you and picked out our favourite checked pieces for the new season – here’s how to wear them...

Go monochrome

If head-to-toe patterns aren’t your thing, make like influencer Lucy Williams and keep the look low-key with black checked trousers – keep them cropped and team them with a camel knit and ankle boots for a modern take.

Keep it classic

Fact: a checked wool coat or blazer is always going to look cool. Our tip? Choose a slightly oversized silhouette for a look that feels more fresh.

Suit up

Checked tailoring was a key trend on the AW runways – see Balenciaga and Stella McCartney. If you’re going for a suit, just be sure to choose a relaxed fit and balance the look with sneakers or slides.

Ready to take on the trend? Shop our favourite checked pieces below…

Plaid is always a trend when it’s Autumn. The season of going back to school calls all preppy styles in and plaid is a major one. This season especially plaid pants are a huge deal and I love it! You can either go bold like me with yellow plaid pants or go for more subtle colours to get the ultimate preppy vibes. #plaid #print #trend #preppy #school #fashion #streetstyle

ue and lilac are truly stunning.   I also really like how it could work very well with the belt or without the belt.  ¿Would you wear this dress for summer? Photo Credit: @shayla on Twitter  #outfit  #dress #summer #look  This photo has three outfits but only one of them, I like. The third one at the right lacks definition on the beautiful curvy silhouette of the girl. Maybe with a good belt, it could be a winner.  The one in the center, I mean, the dress is beautiful but I wouldn´t pair it with that hat. The dress is very romantic and the hat is kind of edgy. If the girl would have an updo or some nice relax waves on the hair, again a winner.  And now the winner, the one in the left. Everything is right with this outfit, the gorgeous plaid against the white, the hat, the little clutch. I would name this look expensive summer days.  ¿What´re your thoughts on this three outfits photo credit: @telva on twitter. #look #fashion #streetfashion #trend

Last season it was black and white ginghams wherever I turned and now its colourful plaids. After Burberry’s collections of rainbow checked trenchcoats, the fashion world became obsessed with the idea of colourful plaids. Not usually a summer pattern, plaids are now big in street styles. Add the trendiest pattern of the season to your wardrobe with yellow plaid pants or pink plaid blouses. #plaid #trend #pattern #check #burberry #fashion #streetstyle

Now, if you saw this dress and didn't immediately think of Clueless, you probably need to reevaluate your life. I am so in love with this dress, if I was a little more spendy with my overdraft and yellow didn't wash me out I'd have already bought it. This could be worn with strappy simple heels or trainers, maybe a denim jacket and it's an easier summer look. And again not a floral in sight. Image: Inter Mix

What a fun pair makes that Louis Vuitton bag with the plaid coat.  I think that what makes this pairing stand out if the fact that the bag has some really cute stickers on it. Mixing plaid with a designer bag can look very elegant and expensive, but the stickers touch changes the entire vibe of the outfit making it a little bit childish and more low key.  Photo Credits: @whowhatwear on Twitter #bags #fashion #outfit #louisvuitton

Dressing for Spring is always an adventure as you dabble between winter and lighter items to suit your mood and temperature degrees. Then, there are those that seems like they were created for transitional weather take the windbreaker for example. Although it had a bad rap it recently made a great comeback. Perhaps it's due to our love for athleisure that has allowed designers to offer us a brand new range of elevated windbreakers and athletic accessories.

Take Alexander Wang's super sporty version of eye-catching windbreakers both full-length and cropped styles. Sacai and Louis Vuitton also served us with an array of embellished styles including patterns and sequins. Last fall, innovative funky windbreakers made an appearance on the runways of designers like Isabel Marant and Valentino.

But, more recently Paris street style proved that these jackets were among the standout trends. The brightly coloured styles from the 80's and 90's are gaining massive popularity especially paired with other streetwear faves like vinyl pants and dad sneakers.

Celebs also gave their own styling tips. Take Kaia Gerber who was spotted in a windbreaker zipped over a turtleneck with jeans and her favourite white sneakers. Gigi Hadid appeared in NYC sporting a vintage windbreaker with plaid trousers and boots.

Pair your own windbreaker with a spring dress, dad shoes and a cross body round bag for the perfect daywear outfit that you can wear to your brunch or to run errands. Opt for an old-school version and don it over a crop top leggings and sneakers for the ultimate athleisure version.

How will you be sporting your windbreaker this Spring?

This is what I search, when I think of chic but sassy outfits.  I adore how the texture of the plaid dress, mix with those fishnet socks. If you look the pieces separately you may think that they won’t look good together, but as any fashion expert says you can only know if you try it on.  Photo credit: @telva on twitter  #fashion #style #outfit #trend

The walls of the stage were filled with covers of torn magazines, feminist slogans and archival protest posters, all from 1968, superimposed one on the other. And so, with the slogan clear and the inspiration sixties in mind, the Italian presented a collection of retro air based on crochet clothes, berets and sunglasses with coloured crystals.Dresses are filled with flowers, jackets and plaid skirts. The latest Versace fashion show in Milano has a serious influence in clueless and everyone is loving it, me included it! A plaid skirt and coat can look so playful, even if I used to see plaid in neutrals and low key colours, I'm loving the more colourful shades and how fun it pairs with a tee underneath it. Denim has historically been one of the most flattering fabrics for both men and women. Its unique versatility factor puts it front and centre for the high street and the high end. The level of creativity for 2018 is uncompromising and can range from a pile of patches acting as jeans to exaggerated forms that can be styled in completely unexpected ways. Look out for lots of cutouts, embroidery, patches and variety in hemlines in our top picks below!

CUTOUTS
#262626">
#262626">Take your cues from Kendall Jenner by styling a cut-out midi denim skirt with a silk spaghetti strap top. Finish the look with a vintage pair of 90s inspired sunnies and an equally grungy pair of mules for an edgier outfit.

MODEL OFF DUTY JEANS
#262626">
#262626">Super tight skinny jeans have morphed into straight cut styles that are comfier and define the silhouette without being constraining. Gigi Hadid and sister Bella were spotted sporting a more laid-back option: layers of denim. To achieve Gigi’s London Fashion Week off-duty look, the model layered chambray and yellow plaid button-downs with a long, frayed denim vest, then stunned with white and light blue layered, cropped jeans.

STEP HEM

If you really want to nail the 2018 denim look then look no further than the step hem, which shows no signs of stopping since last season. You can thank Vetements for the much needed innovative twist! #262626">If you don't have the Vetements budget, why don't you DIY and give one of your pairs a makeover by staggering the edges.Look below for other affordable options. The great thing about the step hem is that you can style it as you please while showing off your shoe.

TRIPLE DENIM

Canadian tuxedo has many retro connotations that range #262626">from Dolly Parton to Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears circa 2001.Nowadays you can triple or quadruple your denim by wearing contrasting shades or denim thickness. Play with proportions and juxtaposing materials for the most impressive results.

FRINGING

For the past three years, tassels and fringes have been put front and centre everywhere from Zara to Anthropologie, without any signs of abandoning the limelight. #262626">The trend's evolved so you don't have to stick to your frayed jeans necessarily. Pick up a fringed mini skirt with fringes, a distressed denim jacket or opt for a pair of uber cool denim sandals finished with tassels. One of our favourites is a distressed denim blouse with a frayed hem courtesy of Marques’ Almeida.

EMBROIDERED

The obvious option here is springtime florals. From rock n roll roses to funky pineapples even quotes make for a super stylish way to decorate your favourite pair of jeans this summer.

PATCHWORK

You can try clashing similar blue tonal panels or play with different sizing by assembling large squares with minuscule patches on the jeans taking cues from Eva Chen and Kendall Jenner. Experiment with positioning pockets in unexpected places or colours. If DIY is not your calling, don't worry. Just browse through our selected edit of denim items and shop your favourite items now!

Show-goers at NYFW had to bare the weather tantrums including pouring rain. And maybe under any other circumstances, this would be an obstacle but for street style stars this was their opportunity to show off their raining gear. Chanel's Spring 2018 collection, heavy in PVC and see-through elements was a favourite among the stylish editors and influencers including clear plastic footwear and bucket hats.

Another NYFW street style treasure was belted outerwear. Show attendees braced the freezing temperatures by opting for stylish translations of the basic trench coat or by simply belting many different layers all, at once. One of their favourite trenches to wear was Calvin Klein's signature outerwear by Raf Simons.

Others went for a plaid version, with plastic overlay, pastel colours like mint and blush pink or they scrapped the trench completely and opted for faux fur colourful coats but added plastic details like hats and boots.

If you want to incorporate rain gear into your everyday attire go for a head-to-toe plaid look in a muted colour palette like grey, white and black.

Go for a gelato chic approach by blending pastel colours and pastel details.

Finally, go for the colour clash and opt for bold colours juxtaposed with plastic ankle boots and bucket hats. Your world is your oyster!
