Denim has historically been one of the most flattering fabrics for both men and women. It's also surprisingly versatile, adored by the high street and the high end alike. So it came as no surprise that for SS17 denim is super playful unexpected and comfortable. This means no skinny jeans in the horizon, lots of cutouts, embroidery, patches and variety in hemlines. Here are our top picks!

CUTOUTS

Take cues from Kendall Jenner and sport a sexy midi denim skirt with cutouts and style it with a silk spaghetti strapped top with detailing. Finish the look with a vintage pair of 90s inspired sunnies and an equally grungy pair of mules for an extra chic summer look.

NO SKINNY JEANS (MODEL OFF DUTY)

The days of skinny jeans are thankfully pretty much over for our figures and most of all for optimum blood circulation. Yes, those things were tight. Bella Hadid, Gigi and the entire bunch are sporting a much more comfy solution: boyfriend jeans. For example, Bella opted for a red-hot appeal to a dated Canadian tuxedo while Kendall (going for denim again) wore a sheer bodysuit under a dark wash pant and jacket. Frederikke Sofie went for a polished jumpsuit and layered it on a duster jacket while Imaan Hammam went old school by pairing her baggy overalls with a plaid top.

STEP HEM

If you really want to nail the 2017 denim look then look no further than the step hem. You can thank French designers Vetements for the much needed innovative twist! If you don't have the Vetements budget why not try a little DIY and give them a makeover with staggered edges. Look below for other affordable options. The great thing about the step hem is that you can style it as you please, no rules apply here!

CANADIAN TUXEDO (OR DOUBLE DENIM)

Canadian tuxedo has many retro throwbacks from Woodstock, to Justin and Britney circa 2001, to Dolly Parton circa forever. But even if the trend seems dated, kitsch or unflattering it actually completely depends on styling. You can go safe, by throwing a chambray shift over your denim dress, instead of going head to toe dungarees and jacket. Try sporting a deconstructed denim shirt over your denim skirt shorts or trousers and it will instantly give a modern look to your outfit.

FRINGES/ TASSELS

Fringes and tassels for 2017? Oh yes. For the past 3 years, tassels and fringes have been put front and centre and they don't show any signs of abandoning the limelight. The great news about a trend sticking around for more than a few seasons is that it's been given a chance to evolve. So you don't have to stick to your frayed hem jeans, necessarily. Pick up a mini skirt with fringes, a flawless denim jacket or opt for a pair of uber cool denim sandals finished with tassels. One of our favourites is a distressed denim blouse with a frayed hem courtesy of Marcus Almeida. Thank you!

EMBROIDERED

This is the year to go for embroidered. The obvious option here is springtime florals but don't let that hinder you. Actually, DIY is welcome here, too! From rock n roll roses, to funky pineapples even quotes make for a super stylish way to decorate your favourite pair of jeans this summer.

PATCHWORK

If you want to play with dimension design and personality adding uber cool patches is the denim path for you! You can try clashing similar blue tonal panels or play with different sizing by assembling large squares with minuscule patches on the jeans. Experiment with positioning pockets in unexpected places or colours. If DIY is not your calling don't worry! Just browse through our selected edit of denim items for SS17.

Lakmé Fashion Week Resort 2017 is all about sustainability, and Day 2 was a great embodiment of that brief. Here's our roundup of our faves!

Sanjukta Dutta
The "Mekhela Chador" collection was all about ethnic Assamese motifs like peacocks, butterflies, and lions, and they truly brought this collection alive! And we couldn't have asked for a better showstopper for this show than the lovely Preity Zinta.

Amrich
This label's Resort 2017 collection was titled "Chiaroscuro", meaning the use of contrasting light and shadow. And that's exactly what this collection did, with monochromatic colour schemes and geometric prints.

Naushad Ali
This designer's collection hits the sweet spot for us since we love neutrals as well as brights! We adore the maxi length outfits that combine the two colour families effortlessly. Indigene Indigene was all about effortless summer layering this season, and we absolutely love the easy quality of this collection. The handwoven jackets with patchwork detailing fit the sustainability brief perfectly.

Sailesh Singhania
Every Indian girl dreams of owning that one beautiful, breath-taking sari that stands the test of time and can be passed on to the next generation. That's the dream Sailesh Singhania's collection embodies, with its gorgeous, rich tones and intriguing animal motifs.

Naomi Campbell absolutely stunned on the runway for Versace. The veteran supermodel walked in their Spring 2017 show along with models like Irina Shayk, Hanne Gaby, and newer models like Gigi Hadid.

Gigi got to close the show in a killer look: a flowy, sheer-paneled navy dress with strappy sandals and a long windbreaker. Take a peek through the shots from the runway to see Donnatella's latest creations: 80's chic patchwork, long flowy dresses and windbreakers, and bold, cool colours.

See the pics above and prepare to be WOWed.

Fashion is one of the best ways to express your personality, so it goes without saying that the kind of denims you go for say a whole lot about you! Which of the following fits you the best?

Embellished jeans
If you tend to pick jeans that have sequins, patchwork, embroideries, or other colourful designs on them, you're a creative thinker. In your mind, regular, unembellished denim represents everything dull and boring, which is the exact opposite of what you are!

Super distressed jeans
Do you gravitate towards ripped up, distressed, frayed jeans? You sound like a rebel!

Denim everything
Do you find that denim jeans aren't enough, and you have have everything denim, right from dungarees to playsuits to shirts to dresses? Well, then you're just a denim addict, plain and simple!

Colourful jeans
If you love wearing jeans in every colour except the regular ol' blue, you're a true-blue (excuse the irony) fashionista!

Black jeans
If you choose to wear black jeans, you're an easy-going gal who likes to keep things basic and simple.

Sabyasachi

Doesn’t every girl dream of marrying in a Sabyasachi? Well, we did too when his collection walked the ramp right in front of our eyes! Glorious, gorgeous and breathtaking is how we’d like to describe Sabya’s work which was beautifully detailed with fur and exquisite handwork embroidery on shift dresses, velvet slip dresses and kaftans. Even though the collection had a modern twist to traditional clothing, the girl in us squealed with joy due the excited he evoked on the ramp.

Style inspiration: Intricate embroidery

Amoh by Jade
Jade’s collection called Itvara, meaning traveller, boasted traditional craftsmanship and handloom fabrics on feminine silhouettes. The garments were all silk, linens and cottons which spread a soulful vibe in the audience.

The gorgeous Pooja Hedge was seen showstopping towards the end in a monochromatic outfit which made her look chic and uber stylish.

Style inspiration: Embroidered silk

Ridhi Mehra
Heavily infused with indo-western vibes, Ridhi’s collection paired ghagra with crop tops and gowns with dazzling gold embroidery. We’ve seen the indo-western trend a lot, but Ridhi gave us a fresh collection which boasted traditional embroidery patterns, perfect for the modern day!

Style inpriration: Traditional ghagra and crop tops

Swati Vijaivargie
The designer’s collection looked like ancient paintings on fabric and it was gorgeous! Upon inspecting further, we learned that it was inspired by the Pichwai paintings of Nathdwara in Rajasthan. It was a beautiful compilation of patchwork and applique with antique marodi embroidery on pure silk. Well, you’ve got to see it love it!

Style inspiration: Big embroidered prints!

If you missed #LFW day 3, worry not as we’re here for your rescue. While this day almost seemed like a long party, we went home with immense inspiration for design and fashion. Here are some best designers who shone bright and emerged as winners at the show.

Doodlage
If frayed patchwork and prints is your game, then you’re sure to love Doodlage. Comfort clothing with elaborate layering has always been a unique selling point of the brand and Kriti Tula aces the modern hippie vibe. Her collection this year boasted a beautiful art that is colour patchwork which blew our minds away. We’re totally inspired by the energy we saw on ramp yesterday.
Style inspiration: Comfort clothing + colour blocking

Gaurang
Gaurang boasted his signature style last evening by showcasing a vibrant collection of traditional Indian wear including benarasis and bandhani. Seeing his collection was a pleasant break from new-age clothing as the zari work and prints made us feel proud of the stunning waves and textiles of India. His vivid colour palette and elaborate lehengas have geared us for the next festive season. We can’t wait!
Style inspirations: Vibrant saris

Rimzim Dadu
Rimzim’s collection, titled ‘The Maze’ explored the symbolic relationship between fashion, textiles, installation design and performance art to create a unique interative experience for the audience. A collection like this easily helped us boast about the art and science that is fashion as these garments played with his signature metal wire and leather hand weaving techniques that would keep you stunned for the entire season! Wondering what garments in the future would look like? Well, give your thought a break because your answer lies right here.
Style inspiration: Metallic ensembles

Rajesh Pratap Singh
Season after season, we have seen some beautiful yet minimalistic constructions from Rajesh Pratap Singh and he delivered the same intensity this time around. He gave his collection, ‘The Punjabi Suit’ a twist by adding high tech futuristic treatment to his Indian roots. The collection included salwars, capri pants, denim-waistcoats and striped dhoti pants that took our breath away! Style Inspiration: Indo-western

Udta Punjab has been a huge success, and it definitely deserved a huge success bash to celebrate!

And everyone seems to be in a major holiday mood, judging by the outfits we saw at the bash.

Alia rocked a patchwork outfit which screamed summer, and Shahid's floral shirt did the same.

Masaba showed up in a super relaxed outfit, consisting of denim shorts, a white top, and a scarf casually thrown on.
