There are a few age-old interior design tricks that always work, no matter what your home looks like or how spacious it is – see upping the cosiness factor in winter with twinkly lights or adding a little interest with a gallery wall. Changing up your space to suit a new season is easy, you just have to know a few of the golden rules…

One of the most important tricks is knowing just how powerful colour can be and knowing how to work a trend to your advantage. This season it’s all about yellow – sunshine tones, mustard hues, deep orangey palettes, yellow home decor is everywhere.

Now, we’re not saying you should rush in with the Dulux and paint all four walls yellow. On the contrary, if you want to work this bold tone in your space, you’ll need to be careful to balance it with the rest of your décor. The key here is using yellow as an accent colour. You can do this in three ways…

Opt for bright yellow accessories like candles, cushions and artworks to offset the rest of the room. A pop of colour will lend the space a cheerful, eclectic vibe.

Invest in a statement piece that will act as the only yellow focal point in the room. A velvet sofa, chair, a pair of yellow curtains or sunflower-toned doors, cabinets and shelves will draw the eye and pep up the room in no time.

Lastly, for something a little more permanent you can get creative with paint and paper. Invest in a cool roll of printed wallpaper from the likes of Cole & Son, Matthew Williamson or House of Hackney and bring the sunshine in on a feature wall or papered surface – this works especially well in the bedroom or bathroom.

Whatever your style, space or budget, there’s always a way to create a chic gallery wall in your home. Whether you opt for a simple cluster of frames or a statement arrangement, there are a few things to remember when buying artworks and creating a unique composition…

Size is everything

When it comes to adorning your wall with beautiful artwork and posters, try thinking outside the box. The secret to a great gallery wall is variety; so opt for a range of sizes and shapes for your frames and prints.

Practice colour theory

Pick a palette and stick to it. A gallery wall is vastly improved by playing with a few strong colours. If your artworks are all different, try matching black and gold frames in different sizes, or invest in posters with a common colour theme.

Mix it up

Different types of frame, twinning prints, triptychs, cool borders and hanging accessories – this wall is your oyster so have fun with it. Play with texture, perhaps add a hanging plate or two and keep things eclectic.

Lighting

The right lighting is an essential component of a great gallery wall, so opt for some cool hanging lamps, industrial-style exposed bulbs or simple candles to brighten and lift your space and showcase those prints in all their glory, day or night.

It’s amazing what you can do with a simple photo. A little editing, a forgiving  filter and you can create the perfect shot. Apart from the odd OOTD, flatlay, food snaps and gorgeous travel shots, the focus on Instagram has shifted massively towards home decor and interiors this year with the shelfie replacing the selfie.  Here are a few ways to create the perfect shelfie...

Speak your style One of the most obvious ways is to look at your shelf as a curated IRL feed of your favorite items. Books, memorabilia, plants and artworks are a great place  to start.

Mix and match

Be playful with your shelves by arranging a random array of bits and pieces you have collected over the years and arrange them by similarities in color or by general aesthetic. Then opt for cool clashes to make your shelf stand out.

Symmetry and asymmetry

It's all about striking the perfect balance by opting for at least a few items with clean lines and opting for a visually striking display by playing with symmetry and asymmetry.

Color code

Find a main tonal theme to follow; dark, moody, warm or colorful? Take your pick.

Go green

Adding a few plants here and there can really set the mood for a great shelfie. Add a few white posters and candles for effect.

Sure dark velvets in luxe, thick textures are the staple of winter months – we see them everywhere, from the runway to our favourite influencer’s homes – but what about styling velvet in summer? Trust us when we say there’s a place for velvet in every home during the sunnier months, but there are a few rules to follow if you want to get it right…

Go brighter

Opting for blush pinks, muted mustards and pale blues is the way to go. If you can’t quite commit to full drapes or a velvet sofa, mix things up by adding velvet cushions, throws and tonal accents to your existing décor.

Get textural

Full-on velvet can be a bit much for anyone to handle so mix things up for the new season by juxtaposing your velvet pieces with lighter fabrics, like linen and cotton in light tones. Create a tactile feast for the senses with velvet cushions, woven rugs and lightweight throws.

Statement flair

Velvet is by no means the subtlest of materials so incorporating a statement piece for the rest of your interior to play off is always a good idea. Investing in a plush sofa, velvet armchair, pouf or footstool or a statement headboard is a great way to lend your space a little pizazz and get your velvet hit in one fell swoop.

This time of the year is perfect for purchasing a few items to revamp your space. Do away with anything that doesn't work and elevate your little haven with new items that represent your style. Sure, some of us might live in small apartments but aesthetics shouldn't be influenced by that.

So how can you quickly elevate your home decor without breaking the bank?

The rug

Opt for a cool snuggly rug. It will give your room a sense of your style in an instant and warm up a space too…

A marble table

Oh yes, that fabulous material has been the perfect sidekick to the flat lay since the beginning of the year. Aside from Insta snapshots, a marble  table is tough, practical and looks amazing IRL.

The throw

Go for a colourful throw to infuse your space with a little hygge and showcase your character with textures, patterns and color.

Flower power

True interiors magic lies in fresh flowers. Just ask Pandora Sykes and Leandra Medine.

Sheets and linen

Go for a blush pink or violet shade for a relaxed feminine vibe, or brighten the space with fresh white sheets and pillowcases.

The full-length mirror

Well, how would you take those ootd's without a mirror? Opt for a unique shape like a squiggle for a pinch of extra character.

Summer is on the horizon and let’s face it, our penchant for palm trees is still going strong. In fact, we’re embracing the tropical trend and going full cabana with rum on the bar cart, tropical tunes in our headphones and warm-weather plants filling up our living rooms.

But hold on just a second… Lest you want your home to look more like a ‘60s themed hotel suite, there are a few rules to follow when opting for this trend in your home. Our Editors have put together a few simple tips on how to nail the look, whatever your budget and no matter the size of your space.

Unless you love that kitsch, busy look, go for a single print and stick to it. Palm print wallpaper is a great way to channel the tropical trend and some of the world’s coolest designers have created their own signature versions. Keep the rest of your room pared down for a sleek contrast.

Mix up your textures. Things are going to look a little over the top if all rattan everything is your rule. Instead, mix dark woods and maybe a little velvet for a cool, plush finish. Add a rattan chair or screen for a cool Cuban twist.

Use accessories to your advantage. Create a sense of sunshine with big, light-reflecting mirrors, metallic accents, cool cushions and cocktail glasses.

Invest in some house plants to complete the tropical look – don’t worry if you don’t get on with real plants, there are some great faux options available which are much more manageable and look great.

Create a chic summer look at home and indulge in a little staycation with the picks from our edit below…

Last year we saw an array of jungle and tropical-inspired prints, flamingo hues and metallics in the most photographed homes in the globe. This year, however, designers are opting for a little less frivolity and choosing warm, cosy colours with the power to make a home a true haven.

Try our pick of the big interiors trends for 2018…

Rich tones and hues

Even though grey is still among the designer favourites, colours are richer this year, whether on furniture, walls or bedding. Moody colours – such as violet, navy and emerald green – are taking centre stage. For richness,  opt for velvet accents to show off the hues.

Dark wood

Furniture is turning to the dark side this year, stepping away from the pale Scandi-inspired woods of seasons past. The darker shades infuse a space with a sense of vintage glam and work beautifully against metallics. Add a fusion of walnut, gold, brass or marble for the perfect amalgamation of natural materials.

Wanderlust

Exotic cities influence interior trends when it comes to carpets and accessories. This season, go for earthy shades of clay, terracotta and ochre and mix your textures. Add a few plants and channel a tropical cabana in your living room.

Artisanal touches

Just like fashion, interiors are all about natural textures this season. The handmade feel is gaining ground with materials such as rattan and linen stealing the limelight. Try adding natural and handcrafted pieces to your home for a luxe touch. Are you ready to infuse your tired digs with new life?

Coachella may be over but we’re still totally inspired by those California desert vibes. Whether it’s our favourite bloggers sunning it up in Joshua Tree or gorgeous shots of cute stores in mountain towns, the Cali aesthetic is all over Instagram and has stolen our hearts.

We love the laid-back boho décor typically found in cool desert homes, so we decided to create an edit and a few insider tips to help you nail the look in your space for less.

How to create a desert-inspired boho home look…

Go greener

Now, the desert wouldn’t be the desert without a few cacti so the first thing on your list should be desert plants. Whether you opt for a family of tiny succulents or a statement aloe, bringing green indoors not only looks great, it’s proven to boost your mood. If, however, you’re a notorious plant killer, opt for a few plastic plants – there are some amazing ones to be found in our edit.

Mix your textures

Want to nail that boho look? Mix up your fabrics and patterns and don’t be afraid to layer clashing cushions and throws. A statement rug and a few scatter pillows can go a long way.

Go west

Desert-inspired homes always pay homage to the Wild West so whether you drape ponchos over your chairs, opt for bull-horn accessories or invest in a wall hanging, channel a little American history with your interiors look.

Light it up

The California desert is one of the brightest, sunniest spots on earth so filling your room with light is a must. Go for metallic accents and mirrors to brighten your space and clash light tones with pops of colour. Extra lamps are always a good idea too.

From modern Miami apartments to London’s art deco dens, metallics are back on our interiors radar for SS18. We love the precious metals trend and to be honest, we’re pleased it’s here to stay.

Filling your home with accessories that sparkle and shine can be tricky – you don’t want to go overboard and end up with Santa’s Grotto, nor do you want to go too low key and risk your luxe touches being overlooked.

We’ve put together a list of useful tips on how to work the metallic trend in your home – whatever your room size, taste or budget…

Mix your metals

More is more with precious metals so don’t be afraid to mix warm tones like coppers and yellow golds together. Similarly, cool colours like silver and white gold work wonders when paired in the same room.

A trick of the light

Elevate your shimmering additions by placing them near bright windows and cosy lamp-lit corners. This way, your metallic pieces will help to lend the room a wonderful sense of depth and texture. Copper-framed mirrors are great for this.

Perspective is everything

If you can’t quite commit to a copper coffee table, try grouping rose-gold accessories together to create the illusion of a larger presence in the room. If, on the other hand, you’re ready to go big, let your metallic furniture speak for itself and avoid crowding it with other metallic pieces.

Be yourself

You can find just about anything in gold, silver and copper tones so pick out pieces that reflect your personality and use our styling tips to lend your room a luxe touch.

Indoor Plants are the new home trend everybody is crazy about, but many people don’t know that they have a ton of benefits aside from looking great. So, if you needed a few extra reasons to decorate your home with plants, read-on and you’ll find out why it’s definitely a good idea.

Plants help with breathing

Plants absorb carbone dioxide and release oxygen, the opposite of what humans do when breathing, making them great partners. But it’s important to remember that this process reverses at night, when plants absorbe oxygen and release carbon dioxide. So, unless you go for orchids, succulents or epiphytic bromeliads which never release any carbon dioxide, keep them in your living room and away from your bedroom.

They Purify the Air

Plants remove toxins from the air. In fact, according to NASA research, they can get rid of up to 87% of volatile organic compounds every day.

They Release Moisture

Plants naturally release moisture which increases the humidity of the air around them. This has been shown to decrease dry skin among other things, meaning you can finally cut down on moisturiser.

They Improve Health

Many studies have shown that plants help sick patients heal faster, but also decrease fatigue, colds, headaches, coughs, sore throats and flu-like symptoms. So now you finally know why bringing plants to ill people is such a thing.

They Sharpen Focus

Studies have shown that having plants indoors makes you more attentive and increases memory retention by up to 20 percent. So if you’re looking to increase your productivity, all you need to do is buy yourself a plant.

It's been a while since I talked about interiors but my, my am I in love with this bathroom. The pink marble shelf is obviously what attracted me immediately. It is completely Parisian. The classic marble is made a little more feminine, a little more chic I think personally. The pink is warm and pretty. Paired with a fun pattern on the panel behind the sink, making sure this is still a modern look. I also love the small metallic finishes in the yellow lights and gold and silver touches. This mirror is also beautiful. Completely simple but the varied heights are bound to make the room feel bigger. When can I move in? Image: Karel Balas/Vogue.com
