There are a few age-old interior design tricks that always work, no matter what your home looks like or how spacious it is – see upping the cosiness factor in winter with twinkly lights or adding a little interest with a gallery wall. Changing up your space to suit a new season is easy, you just have to know a few of the golden rules…

One of the most important tricks is knowing just how powerful colour can be and knowing how to work a trend to your advantage. This season it’s all about yellow – sunshine tones, mustard hues, deep orangey palettes, yellow home decor is everywhere.

Now, we’re not saying you should rush in with the Dulux and paint all four walls yellow. On the contrary, if you want to work this bold tone in your space, you’ll need to be careful to balance it with the rest of your décor. The key here is using yellow as an accent colour. You can do this in three ways…

Opt for bright yellow accessories like candles, cushions and artworks to offset the rest of the room. A pop of colour will lend the space a cheerful, eclectic vibe.

Invest in a statement piece that will act as the only yellow focal point in the room. A velvet sofa, chair, a pair of yellow curtains or sunflower-toned doors, cabinets and shelves will draw the eye and pep up the room in no time.

Lastly, for something a little more permanent you can get creative with paint and paper. Invest in a cool roll of printed wallpaper from the likes of Cole & Son, Matthew Williamson or House of Hackney and bring the sunshine in on a feature wall or papered surface – this works especially well in the bedroom or bathroom.

Whatever your style, space or budget, there’s always a way to create a chic gallery wall in your home. Whether you opt for a simple cluster of frames or a statement arrangement, there are a few things to remember when buying artworks and creating a unique composition…

Size is everything

When it comes to adorning your wall with beautiful artwork and posters, try thinking outside the box. The secret to a great gallery wall is variety; so opt for a range of sizes and shapes for your frames and prints.

Practice colour theory

Pick a palette and stick to it. A gallery wall is vastly improved by playing with a few strong colours. If your artworks are all different, try matching black and gold frames in different sizes, or invest in posters with a common colour theme.

Mix it up

Different types of frame, twinning prints, triptychs, cool borders and hanging accessories – this wall is your oyster so have fun with it. Play with texture, perhaps add a hanging plate or two and keep things eclectic.

Lighting

The right lighting is an essential component of a great gallery wall, so opt for some cool hanging lamps, industrial-style exposed bulbs or simple candles to brighten and lift your space and showcase those prints in all their glory, day or night.

It’s amazing what you can do with a simple photo. A little editing, a forgiving  filter and you can create the perfect shot. Apart from the odd OOTD, flatlay, food snaps and gorgeous travel shots, the focus on Instagram has shifted massively towards home decor and interiors this year with the shelfie replacing the selfie.  Here are a few ways to create the perfect shelfie...

Speak your style One of the most obvious ways is to look at your shelf as a curated IRL feed of your favorite items. Books, memorabilia, plants and artworks are a great place  to start.

Mix and match

Be playful with your shelves by arranging a random array of bits and pieces you have collected over the years and arrange them by similarities in color or by general aesthetic. Then opt for cool clashes to make your shelf stand out.

Symmetry and asymmetry

It's all about striking the perfect balance by opting for at least a few items with clean lines and opting for a visually striking display by playing with symmetry and asymmetry.

Color code

Find a main tonal theme to follow; dark, moody, warm or colorful? Take your pick.

Go green

Adding a few plants here and there can really set the mood for a great shelfie. Add a few white posters and candles for effect.

Ready to create the perfect shelfie? Find all of your essentials in our edit below...

Wedding season is here, but if you’re not quite ready to give Meghan and Harry a run for their money – and let’s face it, who can afford to cater for 600 people? – you might want to consider a few shortcuts. We caught up with Fern Godfrey, Editor of the UK’s biggest Wedding blog Rock My Wedding, to discover her tips for planning your dream day on a budget…

What do you love most about being the Editor of Rock My Wedding? Rock My Wedding was founded by Charlotte O’Shea in 2009, when she was planning her own wedding, it’s grown hugely since then and we’re now a team of 10. I’ve been Editor at Rock My Wedding since 2015 and I absolutely love my job.

We get to share people’s love stories every single day, work with beautiful flowers and dresses, and champion incredible wedding suppliers with our directory, The List. The best bit is seeing the wedding photographs of brides who have read RMW religiously while planning their own weddings –- it’s such a great feeling.

What do you find are the most popular wedding themes?

We feature a lot of rustic luxe weddings -– industrial and agricultural buildings with lots of exposed brick and lofty beams, filled with flowers and candles. This theme works beautifully for weddings across Europe as we have so many incredible historic and working buildings to use. The weather in the UK doesn’t always allow for the amazing outdoor celebrations we feature from France, Italy and Spain, but all of the weddings we blog are amazing in their own unique way.

How can one plan a beautiful wedding on a budget?

If you want to save money while planning your big day, then the key thing is decide on what is important to you as a couple. If you chose the areas you’re going to spend on, then you can try to save on the others.

Do you really need wedding favours? Can you serve canapés as a starter and wedding cake as your dessert? Have you considered a Spotify play list rather than a band? Do you really need a pair of designer shoes? If flowers aren’t important to you, then use local foliage and seasonal blooms. The one thing we’d always recommend spending on is professional photographs and a film – these things will allow you to remember your big day forever and so they are the most important part.

Can you share any useful DIY tips?

We’ve created a couple of floral DIY’s for Rock My Wedding readers. The first is a chair back arrangement to take your seating to the next level. The other is for a classic flower crown – these are very popular with boho bridesmaids, especially at cool, rustic weddings out in the countryside, but you can use any kind of flower to achieve the look and feel you want. There are plenty of examples on the Rock My Wedding Instagram feed.

As an expert, what would you pack for a destination wedding?

As a wedding guest? A floral maxi dress, a wide brimmed hat and some sunglasses. As the bride? A soft and flowing gown, some pretty sandals and lots of Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Pressed Powder.

Shop Fern’s edit for the perfect pieces to make your day special, whatever your budget and wherever you’re heading to tie the knot…

Spring is all about recharging in order to take on the new season with a fresh outlook. Sometimes all you need to do is relax and indulge in a little ‘me time’.

A quick browse online throws up numerous sales at local hotels and wellness centres offering discount spa day packages. Take advantage of a day filled with massages, facials, manicures and a dip in the pool or the hot tub. Or try out a couple of Pilates or yoga classes to take your wellness day to a whole new level.

What to wear on a spa day...

Before you book your day away, make sure your wardrobe’s spa-ready. Fill your weekend bag with a fluffy robe, a luxe one-piece swimsuit and silky-soft slippers. Don’t forget your shades and a stylish designer tote for the journey there and back.

If checking into a spa is off the cards, why not recreate the vibe at home?

Happy Mother's Day! To celebrate the day, we recently caught up with new mummy and fashion blogger Vaida. She is the author of the blog Fashion Addicted and the Instagram account @fashionbyvaida, where she documents her adventures in fashion, beauty travelling and of course parenting. Read her interview below and find out the best Mother's Day gifts she suggests on her exclusive list below.

What compelled you to start your own fashion & lifestyle blog?

I started my fashion career as a model but it just wasn’t for me.  Despite that I still was into fashion very much. After constantly being approached by girls and asked where I bought one or another item I decided to create fashion blog and share all my outfit details there.

What do you enjoy most about the creative process?

Even it’s hard work I enjoy every bit of it. From creating an outfit to posting it on the blog/Instagram and all the bits in between: looking for beautiful spots to shoot, posing or creating a flatlay, taking pictures, editing them. And the most enjoyable thing is to get positive reactions from my readers.

What are the challenges and also the benefits of being a freelance content creator and influencer especially being a new mum?

I love being independent, I can work cosily on my sofa watching my baby playing around. I think that’s the best thing. However being a mum and freelancing has cons too. I am limited to attend various events and sometimes plans can be changed because of my babies needs.

What are your non-negotiables regarding your wellness routine?

Having a bath with lot’s of bubbles, candles and relaxing music on Sundays is my best wellness time.

How would you describe your personal style? Can you give us an example by styling your go-to outfit featuring your favourite brands?

In one word I would say it’s elegant. I usually choose classic pieces. Mango white suit with Gucci handbag and Zara heels.

What are your new mum lifesaver products that you can't live without?

Mama Mio products are wonderful for both mums to be and new mums.

You're always travelling. Which one of your recent destinations was the most memorable to you and why?

Probably the best memories are from Mauritius (we got married there) and Thailand. Everything is so different there, nature is mesmerising, people are relaxed and the food is super delicious.

What are you working on at the moment? Do you have any specific goals for this year?

I have Build a Bear project coming up. I am going with my boy to Build a Bear workshop to create Easter bunny. I am sure we will have a lot of fun. I have also few beauty and fashion projects coming up soon so keep your eyes peeled and follow my blog Fashion Addicted and Instagram account @fashionbyvaida

Mother's Day is this Sunday and if you haven't gotten your mum a gift yet, don't fret. We've created a Mother's Day Gifting Guide 101 for last minute gifts.

This year on 11 March, instead of the admittedly gorgeous flowers and delicious chocolates you usually get, why don’t you raise your gift game? She did bring you into the world, after all, and has cared for you ever since with unconditional love; and if your mother hasn’t, spoil the most important and nurturing woman in your life instead.

Fill the house with a soothing sent and relaxing atmosphere with Jo Malone candles, pamper your mum with a well-deserved spa at home with the Little Picture Company (or even treat the two of you to a Spa with the Red Letter Days offer off 15% off until Sunday!), and give her a lovely Lilly & Lotty necklace. Get the chance to grab a personalised gift to make it a truly special moment!

Shop below and pick your Mum's gift out before it's too late...

Hooray, we're in the final countdown for Christmas. And if you're spending Christmas at home you have probably already sorted out your gifts, bought them, wrapped them and placed them under the Christmas tree. You have also decorated your flat and immersed it in true holiday spirit either with choosing a great set of Christmas lights or by investing in a few items like posters, candles and tinsel. Now, it's time to think about classic Christmas Dinner recipes.

Apart from your typical turkey with stuffing, you'll need some mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and vegetables such as carrots, turnip, parsnips. If you want to stay away from going so traditional try other types of poultry, such as roast beef, or ham. For dessert, go for a delicious pumpkin or apple pie, raisin pudding, Christmas pudding, or fruitcake.

In many parts of the world especially in the US, Christmas decorations have become a bit of a competitive sport. You step outside in a residential area and you see an array of colourful lights featuring a snowman, a reindeer, Santa Claus, Christmas tree and there must be a sleigh over there too! It's really a great addition to the feeling of true holiday spirit and lights up entire neighbourhoods bringing us closer to the Christmas aesthetic.

If in fact, you live a small flat especially if you share, you can go smaller but still dress your home in Christmas spirit. Go for impressive lights, and decorations. From candles to plates, mugs, placemats and even posters you can truly get into holiday mode without breaking the bank.

Christmas is the time to get cosy and for me this extends to the home. I don't just enjoy dressing myself in sequins and velvet but my bedroom is covered in fairy lights, festive scented candles, anything really that sparkles. I love this home look by Anthropologie (image from their Instagram @antropologieeu). This is totally snug from the furry stockings to the festive garland and golden trees. I also love the touch of fairy lights in the fire place. This is a great way to get around have a closed fireplace. Fairy lights or candles decorate the the space warmly and aptly. A perfect Christmas setting.
