2018 has been a huge year for trends - we've seen so many come and go and while we've been avid fans of some, others left us shaking our heads in bewilderment and disbelief.

Whether you're a fearless experimentalist or prefer to play it safe, there will always be a handful of fall trends that return year after year and boy, do we love to rely on them...

The brown leather tote

Everyone and their grandmother owns a brown leather tote. It's a fall staple and an enduringly cool and reliable piece. Whether you opt for a classic shopper or a more directional silhouette, a mini or an oversized style, this baby complements anything and everything.

A pair of statement earrings

Costume jewelry trends come and go but a go-to pair of oversized earrings is always a winner. Play with this season's resin and beading trends or keep things classic with statement gold hoops or a structural silver design.

Something velvet

Velvet and fall are a match made in sartorial heaven. Luxe, lustrous and the perfect way to jazz up your day-to-night look, opt for something in bright gem tones a lá the Gucci gang.

Something in animal print

Every year we hang up our spots and stripes for summer and get excited when fall hits and it's time to rock them again. Faux-fur coats are always equal parts edgy and elegant and who doesn't love a statement print?

Something studded

In fall it's entirely permissible to channel your inner goth and studded accessories are a must. Think embellished bags and studded western-style boots. Or if you're not prepared to revisit the fashion faux pas of your youth, toughen up your look with a pair of iconic Rockstuds by Valentino.

Ready to shop for the new season but overwhelmed by all the trends? Don’t worry – we’ve rounded up the best looks from London Fashion Week, along with our favourite AW18 pieces.
Modern military

It’s not unusual for military pieces to appear on the AW runway, but Belstaff’s collection was a fresh take on the trend. We loved the printed hoodies worn with double-breasted coats and zipped cargo pants.

Reworked classics

For AW18, Burberry gave its iconic pieces a contemporary update: see the oversized trench coats, rainbow logo-embroidered sweatshirts and checked baseball caps.

Tonal tailoring

Loved for its pared-back minimalism, Joseph’s autumn collection did not disappoint. A standout look consisted of clean brown tailoring worn with a sharp camel coat.

Utility cool

JW Anderson’s show combined menswear and womenswear, but each had an effortless utilitarian feel. We predict the graphic knit sweaters and relaxed khaki pants will be an instant hit.

Industrial outerwear

Not only were the coats and jackets at Christopher Raeburn incredibly cool, they were also constructed from recycled materials. Look out for the checked wool pieces made from Russian navy blankets.

Asymmetric shapes

Chalayan’s deconstructed designs made ordinary wardrobe staples feel completely unique – check out the cut-out trousers and cleverly folded coats in the line-up.

Heritage checks

You can always count on Margaret Howell to deliver timeless pieces that will transcend seasons – for example, the checked shirts and Prince of Wales tailoring seen on the runway.

Retro refresh

‘70s references could be spotted throughout Oliver Spencer’s show, but in the most understated way: see the corduroy and velvet trousers and shearling jackets.

Sports luxe

Sportswear has become a fixture on the runway, and it’s not going anywhere fast. Band of Outsiders mixed retro tracksuits with smart tailoring for a fresh take on the trend.

Go graphic

Bold logo prints are still dominating the street style circuit, and it looks like they’re sticking around for another season. Cottweiler’s final look was an oversized T-shirt embroidered with the Natural History Museum’s name – also the location of the label's show.

Now that September's here and New York Fashion Week has graced us once again, it’s time to reflect on the trends we saw on the runways and get excited about wearing them in real life. Here’s our round-up of the top ten trends we loved at NYFW and the ones you'll be seeing everywhere...

Animal print

Already spotted on our favorite street style stars, animal prints ruled the New York runways. Tom Ford’s came in every shape and color you could imagine, but classic leopard patterns still dominate – see Victoria Beckham’s timeless coats.

Western boots

From slouchy over-the-knee shapes to classic cowboy styles, plenty of Western boots were worn on the runway this season. Whichever you choose, show them off with cropped denim or maximalist dresses.

Checks

They may be nothing new, but checks are about to have a major moment. Michael Kors and Calvin Klein 205W39NYC both showed punk-inspired tartan coats – we’ll be wearing them with denim and chunky boots.

Logomania

Logo prints have ruled the street style circuit for several seasons now, and they’re not going anywhere – Alexander Wang’s embellished tracksuits and Tom Ford’s sequined sweatshirts are proof if proof were ever needed.

Neon

Already championed by Kim Kardashian, neon brights popped up everywhere. We loved Calvin Klein’s industrial-style jackets and Tibi’s fluorescent sweaters teamed with low-key camel tailoring.

‘70s brown

Coach and Self-Portrait both showed plenty of ‘70s-inspired brown hues, proving the trend has serious staying power. Try a belted coat or midi dress for a timeless feel.

Colorful suiting

Navy and black will no longer do – suits this season came in every color possible. From candy pinks to pastel blues, any shade goes as long as you’re wearing it from head to toe.

‘80s maximalism

Tom Ford proved the ‘80s are here to stay for another season with purple leopard-print leggings, sequins and shoulder pads.

Modern sports

Sportswear is now a staple on the runway, and this season it came in sleek silhouettes with industrial details – think quilted nylon midi skirts and oversized drawstring pants.

The new utility

Military-inspired pieces make their way onto the catwalk every fall, and with good reason: a classic double-breasted coat or khaki jacket will never go out of style.

I really like freckles, I personally think that people with freckles just looks so youthfull and almost whimsical. That's why I always love when a makeup artist cheats this look for a photoshoot like in this picture. It's very easy to do, just take a soft brown pencil and draw a few spots along your nose bridge, cheeks, and even your chin is you want to. Blend the faux freckles a little bit with your fingers and then dust translucent powder to set them in place. This is what i call a very lashy makeup look. Kourtney is well known for her beautiful monochromatic makeup with neutral shades. She always has some kind of brown shade on her eyes, soft contour and bronzer and nude lips, but what really stand out in this look against her usual ones are her lashes. I love how her makeup artist uses no fake lashes and instead, he focused on enhancing her natural ones, to create this spidery look that makes her eyes pop soo much! photo credit: @byrdie on twitter #beauty #makeup #kourtneykardashian #look

Now that summer’s in full swing – well, more or less – we’re looking to our favourite beauty bloggers for new tips on how to get our glow on. Achieving the perfect sun-kissed make-up look is an art form and there are a few tricks you’ll need to know before you nail it.

One of these beauty hacks is embracing the humble freckle. Freckles are unique, beautiful and should never be covered up – just take a hint from Meghan Markle who proudly makes hers the focus of her look, wherever she goes.

If you’re lucky enough to have a sprinkling of real freckles then opt for a foundation offering lighter coverage, a glowy primer or simple concealer to blend any redness or dark circles out while letting those freckles shine through.

Be sure to use a moisturiser or make-up with SPF and dot over any freckles you want to accentuate with an eyebrow pencil in a neutral shade.

If you don’t have freckles, worry not because it’s easy to fake it. For the perfect faux glow, all you’ll need are a few products. Just do your make-up as you usually would and make sure you have a smooth, well-moisturised base to work on.

Then, with a little brown eyeshadow, a pencil or a dab of concealer in a darker shade than your natural skin tone, dot a few clusters over the bridge of your nose and across your cheeks.

Start small and build up using a brush, depending on how subtle a look you want to go for. Finally, dust off with some setting powder and a little bronzer. To supercharge your look for summer, sweep a little gold-toned highlighter over the tops of your cheekbones and dot a little at the tip of your nose.

Polka dots have made an unexpected comeback this summer and we're not mad about it. No longer synonymous with '50s fancy dress and the frocks in the back of your granny's wardrobe, the dotty dress is a must-have piece.

Hitting the runway and the high street in cool iterations – see Johanna Ortiz' ruffled off-shoulder style and vacay-ready designs muted brown, yellow and green from the likes of Oscar de la Renta, Nasty Gal and River Island – we've seen all our favourite influencers rocking the trend.
