Fashion Week is so much more than style. During fashion week we get an inside look at the hair and makeup trends that we'll be sporting all next season. On a few lucky occasions like this years’ New York Fashion Week, it also reflects a shift in society on the very definition of beauty. This NYFW was bursting with a sense of change that was embracing activism, and celebrities that were more disrupting than your average celeb bunch.

From the breast cancer survivor Erica Hart, who walked at the Chromat show in a slip dress that was gracefully showing off her scars to the ten-year-old drag kid Desmond Napoles, who walked proudly at Gypsy Sport. To accommodate to this celebration of inclusivity and uniqueness, makeup and hairstyles were extravagant, rebellious and bold.

EYE FOCUS

The focus currently has shifted towards eye makeup featuring over the top looks such as black lashes and plastic bug eyes á la Gareth Pugh. There was gold glitter at Ulla Johnson and smoky eyes at Tom Ford or Alice + Olivia who traded the liquid eyeliner for a smudgy eye pencil. The eyeshadows surrendered to a rainbow effect with graphic edges in shimmering colours of pinks and purples. While Kate Spade opted for diamonds carefully glued on the models’ eyelids.

SUBVERSIVE HAIRDOS

When it comes to hair, the trend was all about spray products using all the essentials to create a  wet look. The accessories were over the top featuring 80’s leather headbands, throwback claw clips and irreverent updos put together with an army of hair gel.

BOLD LIPS

Whether it's two-tone pink and red lipstick, a healthy glow so extreme you're basically applying moon dust to your skin, red was a constant. The classic crimson lip became a powerful pout painted in a carefree fashion of individuality, whether it was in liquid form at Chromat or matte at Bottega Veneta.

HAIR DYE

Objecting to the single hair colour trend of seasons past, bold as they may have been, this time it was all about strategically placed streaks. The models at Sies Marjan wore pinks and blues while green and blonde short dos was also a trend at Marc Jacobs. Which of the makeup trends will you be trying this season? Shop all the beauty and hair essentials from our expert edit below!

Take a moment to appreciate the best beauty looks of New York Fashion Week AW18 with us. Because Fashion Month is so much more than just clothes and this was our first chance to check out the hair and makeup trends we'll soon be sporting next season. As with the collections and shows themselves, which celebrated rebelliousness, inclusivity and uniqueness, the shift in society regarding the definition of beauty was reflected boldly and extravagantly.

Here are four of our favourites!

EYE FOCUS

It seems more is more again by the extravagant eye makeup choices on the NYFW catwalks. Ulla Johnson’s models have their eyelids dusted with gold glitter, while Tom Ford presented his own take on sexy smoky eyes, and Alice + Olivia traded liquid eyeliner for smudgy eye pencil. The eyeshadows surrendered to a rainbow effect with graphic edges in shimmering colours of pinks and purples at Oscar de la Renta and Anna Sui. We can’t wait to DIY Kate Spade’s eye makeup: sparkling diamonds carefully glued onto eyelids.

SUBVERSIVE HAIRDOS

The main trend was wet look hair, created by sprays that worked on every texture as seen on the Row catwalk by hairstylist Eugene Souleiman. The accessories were pretty maximalist: with 80’s leather headbands, throwback claw clips and irreverent gelled updos among the best of the bunch.

BOLD LIPS

Red was a colour constant, even when paired with pink for two tone lips. And it was masterfully set off with a healthy glow so extreme it will look like you applied moon dust to your skin. This classic crimson became a powerful pout, although painted in a carefree fashion, in liquid form at Chromat and matte at Bottega Veneta.

HAIR  DYE

Swap the single hair colour of seasons past, as bold as it is, for strategically placed streaks. The models at Sies Marjan wore pinks and blues, while green and blonde short dos made an appearance at Marc Jacobs. Which of the makeup trends will you be trying this season? Shop all the beauty and hair essentials from our expert edit below!

It looks like "opal hair" is the new hair trend of the year. Even if it could clearly be a high maintenance look, I would very fun to try it if you recently bleach your hair to a platinum blonde or just wanna try a new me, new year transformation. What´re your thoughts on this unicorn hair? Photo Credit: @marieclaire_es on twitter #hair #hairtrend #opalhair #hairstyle #2018

We always knew Rita Ora was at least a triple threat and the singer/actress/model (she’s a designer and presenter too) proved it with three on-point outfits in one night as she worked the pre-Grammy party circuit. Which sounds a bit excessive unless you’ve got the world’s most exciting brands at your disposal and fans watching your every move. First up was Ora’s take on the Canadian tuxedo- a denim jacket with denim jeans- which was unbuttoned enough to reveal a lacy black bra underneath. Besides breathing new life into the exposed underwear trend, the white heels she wore with it gave this cool, streetstyle worthy look a ladylike twist. A quick change later and Ora entered full bombshell mode, posing up a storm in a black figure-hugging dress with signature red lips and her blonde locks swept up into a tousled up-do. For her performance and final look, she went for a ruffled pink playsuit and sky high heels as she belted out her songs. Only blingy silver jewellery featured in all three looks.

Kudos to Ora for expressing three different sides of her sartorial personality like a pro and proving that the trick to looking good and feeling great is confidence. It’s good to switch up your look once in a while and she’s clearly comfortable in everything she’s wearing. We can’t wait to see her final turn as Mia Grey in Fifty Shades Freed which is out next month.

Smile and follow her lead by shopping these looks in the gallery above in the expert edits below.

Flicking through The Sunday Times with brunch is one of our favourite weekend rituals and it’s also how we discovered the incredibly well-dressed Jane McFarland. For the uninitiated, she is Fashion Director at the newspaper and The Sunday Times Style magazine; but much more importantly the latter’s Wardrobe Mistress, taking over from another ultra-stylish blonde Pandora Sykes. Every week she answers readers’ wardrobe woes in an unmissable feature illustrated by stunning shots of McFarland putting aforementioned pieces and trends through their paces. Only on instagram do you get a full reflection on her impeccable personal taste, which is a masterclass in modern minimalism tempered by intriguing accessories and jewellery. Think cosy but clean coats and knits, streamlining suits and trousers and lux loafers; while her takes on the #evachenpose are reoccurring lift selfies holding beautiful flower bouquets.

What McFarland’s feed is is a breath of fresh air in our Gucci-powered era of maximalism. Rather than steering clear of pattern and sequins, she’s pretty restrained in the ways she wears them- even if she’s wearing it head-to-toe so there isn’t too much going on. Her editor’s eye comes into it’s own with her structured bags and unexpected earrings - Celine and Simon Miller make appearances - and to keep things extra interesting: she breaks up the outfit shots with pictures of art and cool pop culture references. She’s definitely one to watch as she’s experimental with fashion in her own understated way.

We're excited to see what the fashion editor wears next, along with sneak peaks from her Wardrobe Mistress shoots. In the meantime, shop our edit below to recreate some of McFarland’s recent looks.

If you work between 10:30-12:30pm on weekdays, you might not know who Holly Willoughby is so let us enlighten you. The pretty blonde presents brunch TV show ‘This Morning’ adding glamour to mundane topics with her knockout day-to-day style. Tonal two pieces, chic coats and a penchant for pleated skirts and nude heels, she’s, thankfully, a prolific instagrammer too so you can tap and shop her tagged looks as soon as she’s worn them. But her covetable high-low mix of high street to designer pieces never stay in-store for long, much like the Kate Middleton or Megan Markle effect.

Willoughby’s appeal stems from her ‘normal’ figure, well more pilates honed these days, as she showcases how to flatter hourglass shapes while staying on trend. From high-waisted trousers to pencil skirts and swishy skirts- topped with a tight top- she flaunts her favourite features and looks fabulous doing it. She’s great workwear inspiration as she’s always chicly demure by day (to not offend the masses) and more daring at night- hence the wow-factor Ashish rainbow sequin dress she wore on Jonathan Ross. Dressing for TV is hard, given the camera supposedly adds 10 pounds and there seems to be an unwritten rule that female newsreaders wear sheath dresses, but Willoughby nails it every time aided by her stylist Angie Smith (and a tailor we’d wager).

We can’t wait to follow her outfit trajectory in 2018 and in the meantime, shop our edit below to recreate some of Willoughby’s best looks from this year.

This picture right here is what cool winter outfits is all about. The girls are wearing cute long sleeve tops perfect for chill weathers, but on the bottom is where the fun of this outfit begin. The fabulous vinyl pants on the brunette and the metalized pants on the blonde bring a wow factor to the outfit that is very appropriate for party season. Would you wear those pants? Whilst we can't stop talking about whether Justin and Selena will get back together - will they won't they? When will the saga end? - Something is really like to dwell over for a moment is her style. I love Selena's outfit for BFA 2017. This silk beige looks wonderful on her, especially with her blonde hair and a slick of dark lipstick. She shows us that even completely covered and adorned in a thick faux fur you can look gorgeous. As always Selena wears Coach. Image: Elle.com

I would name this photo: Brothers of Winter. An image that celebrates the beginning of the month of December. I also love how platinum blonde hair looks on pale people. But in my opinion, this hair colour looks best on girls and boys that have a very cool undertone in their skin tone. When boys or girls that fake tanning their body dyed their hair with this colour, it can look a lit bit off or wash out their entire complexion I think. What are your thoughts on platinum blonde hair? Photo Credit: @pinterest #platinumblonde #holidays #december #christmas #hairstyle

I'm not quit sure of how i feel with short bangs. Being not my favorite style of bangs, i'm loving how it looks on this model in particular. With the dirty blonde hair and the soft waves, this look has a strong 70´s vibe. I think short bangs look their best, on people with short foreheads that want to show off their brows. What're your thoughts on bangs? love or hat? Photo Credit: fashioneditorials.com #hairstyle #bangs #shortbangs #hair #beauty #trend
