Having great style doesn’t necessarily mean you should be decked out head to toe in labels. In fact, women with great style rarely opt for conspicuous logos. Mixing high street and designer is an art and so is knowing when to splurge and when to save.

Looking amazing doesn’t cost the earth and our Editors are big fans of affordable brands, especially when they roll out a decent designer dupe or two. We asked them for their tips on how to elevate an outfit, the best designer pieces to invest in and how they make their line-ups look that little bit more polished…

Never underestimate the power of accessories

Can’t afford a designer handbag but can justify that silk scarf? Let’s not forget bag charms and clip-on shoulder straps by the likes of Coach, Fendi, Valentino and Prada. Maximalise your tote’s power to shine with a few high-end additions here and there.

The same goes for your outfit. Tie that silk scarf around your neck, rock a Chanel brooch on your high-street denim jacket and rock expensive jewellery with every look. Jewellery is one of the things worth investing in – you’ll never grow out of it and higher quality pieces will last forever. Plus, most styles are timeless.

Sunglasses are your best friend when trying to achieve that super-polished look and most frames look pretty high-end whether they’re marked with a logo or not.

Do look for convincing designer dupes

From Mango to Zara and even online exclusive brands like Chi Chi, a ton of affordable labels offer great designer dupes. So, if you can’t splash out on runway-fresh styles, rest assured you’ll be able to find a convincing imitation that suits your budget.

We love floral maxi dresses for summer days, chunky buckle belts for off duty, guipure lace for all our big events and cool boxy and boho bags; there are so to choose from this season and all at a pretty reasonable price point.

Buy clothes that fit – tailoring is everything

The most important thing to remember when trying to look chic is that you should be wearing your clothes, they shouldn’t be wearing you. The cut of an outfit makes all the difference so invest in pieces that fit you perfectly and get the ones you really care about tailored. Every woman should have at least one well-fitting jacket, dress and pair of trousers in her line-up.

There's definitely something about the allure of the corset. They bring to mind burlesque, Victoriana and the lace-up body-con styles made famous by the Kardashian/Jenner clan. In any case, a little goes a long way and a corset lends even the most casual looks poise and definition. Coincidentally, the classic corset is one of the strongest trends of the season. In fact, the style set were rocking corsets last season too; cinching their jackets, dresses and shirts with lace-up accessories.

For SS18, designers have revisited the trend and paired impressive corsets with contemporary dresses and T-shirts. Take Isabel Marant, who took casual double denim to new heights with a white corset and infused monochrome looks with pops of color via corset belts. Over at Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia juxtaposed bold, over the top shoulder silhouettes with cinched waists. While Loewe showcased one of the best selling corsets adopted by editors and influencers from London to Paris.

How to style a corset?

For an understated look, try pairing a simple white tee with a cool corset or lace-up belt, or cinch your coat or blazer at the waist for a twist on spring layering – a classic trench works wonders for this. Or for something to take you from day to night with ease, team a corset with a dress or button-down shirt and your favorite jeans. Feeling more glam? Transform a blazer into a dress by adding a corset and add just add heels.

This looks like a usual and not exciting spring dress but this is where a good belt can change for better an entire outfit.  Even dough the belt has this sequined heart that is still super girly it's the black color against the pale yellow that makes the outfit pop a lot more. what's your take on belts? love or heart? Moschino has painted their models like smurfs. As if it were an interstellar trip, Jeremy Scott has recalled the futuristic style of the 60s, with dresses and short coats in full colour decorated with zippers and wide belts. A style that at times reminds Jackie Kennedy, with his hat and matching gloves, and others to the efficient stewardesses of the time.Credits: pinterest

We’re just as excited to discover the runaway and  streetstyle trends when Fashion Month rolls around and New York Fashion Week AW18 hasn’t disappointed so far. We spotted inspired ways to style boxy tailoring, daytime sequins, plastic raincoats, look-at-me colour and more so far from Susie Bubble, Camille Charriere et al, but we’re most taken with how ubiquitous a belted waist is. Almost, if not, every day we’ve spied a belted coat (trenches are trending), or a statement strap pulling an otherwise ordinary outfit together with polish. And if you thought we’d reach peak belt bag, think again. Only sporty bum bags have been replaced with ladylike purses.

The best thing about this easy streetstyle trick is that you probably have a belt or belt bag in your wardrobe already that you can use. Don’t be afraid to clash tones and textures, the more unexpected the better to really get in on the action; and a corset belt will give your outerwear a dramatic new dimension. Let your belt bag whittle your waist, rather than buckling it on the hip or over one shoulder, as you’ll leave your hands free and create the illusion of an hourglass figure. That's flattering on everyone.

Shop our edits of the best belts, belt bags and belted coats below so you can trial the trend now.

I tried two trends together and loved it! Suits and d-ring belts definitely go together. You get the empowered feeling with a touch of coolness. Getting points for my style from random people, this style was totally a eye-catcher. Try this trend out just like I did with sneakers to balance your professional woman vibes with hip styles. Mixing two opposite styles can give a very trendy result. Just like pen skirts and sneakers, suits and sneakers do go well too! I’ve always wanted to wear a suit for casualwear but couldn’t find an opportunity. This style is certainly a way to make suits a daywear! #suits #belts #style #streetstyle #asseenonme #trend #triedandtested #fashion #streetwear #cool #hip

I am absolutely, definitely, certainly obsessed with this new micro trend! You don’t have to go to far off your budget to try this new style. D-ring belts are everywhere and with one small touch it adds a “cool” look to your outfit. Try it over your blazer or with your boyfriend jeans, it has the same effect no matter what you pair it with. These canvas belts became a trend thanks to the yellow off-white belt and now this style has been copied by every brand for every budget. #belt #trend #microtrend #style #offwhite #fashion #streetwear #streetstyle

We went through a boiler suit phase in the last season. Now we’re going to a jumpsuit phase which is another major throwback to the seventies. Huge belts are some major accessories you can opt for when wearing a jumpsuit. Although this piece looks gorgeous, it may be hard to go the the ladies room! Yet, we still adore the one-piece style. This is a chance for you to make your accessories stand under the limelight. Bold necklaces, statement earrings, oversize belts… Anything over the top is your go-to item! #style #trend #streetstyle #fashion #jumpsuit #boilersuit #onepiece #belt #earring #necklace #accessories
