A playful mish-mash of vintage finds and ironic ‘bad taste’ objects, kitsch embraces bright colours and retro silhouettes. Certainly an acquired taste, when done right kitsch can be a real crowd pleaser.

This eclectic trend is the definition of maximalism and is certainly not for the faint of heart.
You can dial up the look as much as you like for maximum impact or simply dedicate a corner of your home. Whatever your choice, it’s worth bearing these three golden rules in mind…

Mix and match

This goes for everything – colours, styles, patterns and eras. Don’t be afraid to pepper a vintage sofa with bright modern cushions or mix up your artworks.

Cluster objects

Your kitschy items will be far more impactful when grouped together. This way, your ornaments, artworks and furniture will play off each other far better and work much harder.

Be personal

Pick out items that make you happy, represent you or evoke memories. The beauty of kitsch is that it’s a totally celebratory décor trend and the perfect opportunity to showcase your creative side.

Generally taken to mean understated elegance and rustic charm in the world of interiors, Wabi-Sabi is the Japanese concept of perfect imperfection.

The idea of things being transient or incomplete is a hit with those that like their homes to look lived in and a Wabi-Sabi aesthetic is the perfect way to achieve this.

We’re looking to the following tips on how to channel Japanese aesthetics in your home for autumn and winter…

Rustic surfaces

Think unfinished plaster, unrefined wood and concrete. Clay, terracotta and cracked tile are also great ways to channel the trend, giving an air of simplicity, peace and nature undisturbed.

Natural materials

Wood, stone and earthenware objects and items of furniture are both in keeping with the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic but also speak to Japanese design sense in general. Think about the four elements and try to incorporate all of them in your space.

Imperfect objects

Ceramics, artwork, rustic benches and soft furnishings made from linen and woven wool are all perfect for transforming your living area or bedroom into a cosy space for the cooler months and nailing the Wabi-Sabi approach to imperfection.

Neutral tones

Bright colours are a no-no when it comes to this trend. Keep things natural, minimalist and pared back with cool grey, white, oat and earth tones.

Slip dresses have had a very flashy upgrade. Yes it is Autumn, yes the weather is cold… I know! But quite frankly, fashion doesn’t care. This season, unlike the others, fashion is using bold colours and light fabrics for winter! I don’t know why but I’m slowly liking it. If you’re a bold statement maker kind of gal, you will love this neon satin dress trend. Half from the nineties, half from the eighties this trend is a perfect duo of the decades. Imagine your eighties neon tracksuits in a nineties slip dress. Yep! That’s the style. Your party style is ready miladies! #trend #neon #slipdress #dress #satin #silk #fashion #streetstyle #style

Are you ready for a major, also a weird trend? Everything is coloured in rainbows so why not eyebrows? Fashion brands have used coloured eyebrows in their runway shows and this trickled down to street style and blogger Instagrams. Get ready to bleach your brows! Match your eyebrows to your outfit or get crazy and wear them in bold colours. I guess I’m gonna give this trend a go! How about you? #eyebrows #rainbow #trend #fashion #beauty #makeup #style #streetstyle

Wild prints are back in fashion. The eighties glamour style is here with us now. 80s was filled with zebra prints, even so they were more popular than leopards. Now you have a reason to live the 80s all over again. This retro trend is quite tricky to wear. If you pair them with neons or bold colours you might get a tacky look. But if you stick with the classic black & white colour palette your look will be polished and expensive! #zebra #trend #prints #fashion #style #streetstyle

Finally, our horoscopes are starting to throw some better news our way. We’re sliding out of retrograde central and hey, if you’re a Virgo, it’s birthday season…

Ultra reliable you know what you like and you’re the master of a fail-safe line-up of outfits perfect for every occasion in your calendar. Nonetheless, we could all use a little help from time to time, so we looked to the experts for a few tips on what you should be shopping for – or adding to your wish list.

Virgo's perfectionism means you tend to lean towards symmetrical silhouettes and fine details so opt for A-line and maxi skirts, boxy tees and luxe embroidered jackets to see you from summer into autumn with ease.

An earth sign ruled by Mercury your go-to colours are browns and greens in muted hues. Golden wheat tones are your jam and you always look effortlessly cool in neutrals so stocking up on these is always a good idea.

The last star sign of the summer months and a stickler for being prepared, you’re a pro at transitional dressing. Light layers are your best friend so consider that classic tan trench and ultra-light cashmere sweaters worthy investments.

When it comes to accessories, you’re so on-trend right now. Those gold-toned and tortoiseshell pieces are everywhere and straw bags were practically invented for you.

Shop for your sign from the exclusive edit below and treat yourself to a one or two treats to showcase your personality this month. It is your birthday after all.
