Leamington Spa, Warwickshire:: Try one of the fastest growing watersports in a fun group environment. During the kayaking session, learn the basics of paddle and boat control as well as general river safety. Once the basics are mastered, head out into calm sections of the river under the supervision of qualified instructors. Take a trip through the beautiful Jephson Gardens and local nature reserve to explore, take part in special challenges and put those new skills to the test. Kayaks were originally developed by indigenous people of Arctic regions, who used the boats to hunt on inland lakes, rivers and coastal waters. The first kayaks consisted of stitched animal skins such as seal stretched over a wooden frame, but today's boats are a little more high tech! Availability: Sessions run on selected weekend dates from June - September, plus occasional weekdays during school holidays. Weather: Kayaking goes ahead in most conditions. Very rarely flood conditions may lead to postponement - the venue makes contact if a session is postponed. Duration: Lasts for three hours including a refreshment break. To ensure a prompt start, please arrive a few minutes in advance of the start time. Allow some time at the centre afterwards to shower and change. Numbers On Day: There is a student to tutor ratio of 8:1 and everyone has their own kayak. Spectators: Spectators are welcome and can hire boats during the season to go out on the river. Safety remains their responsibility at all times. Facilities including a cafe are located in the park overlooking the river. Dress Code: Please wear basic sports clothes that are fine to get wet. Bring a towel and complete change of clothes. A buoyancy aid and a waterproof top are provided. Either remove or firmly secure glasses. Contact lenses may be worn. Guidelines: Restrictions: Minimum age is eight and maximum is 13. Those aged 14 or over are eligible for adult kayaking (see experience code LBCKA). Other Info: You WILL get wet but there are hot shower facilities so please bring shower kit. The venue is a British Canoeing Quality Mark centre, and is licensed by the Adventure Activity Licensing Authority.
