What is Tidal and why is everyone going on about it? Well actually, it's a pretty big deal.
Tidal is Jay Z's new venture; a paid-for music streaming service to rival Spotify. The beauty of Tidal [for the artists] is that they stand to gain a bigger cut of the profits - there's no free tier like Spotify has. Here in the UK, we can expect to pay £20 a month for the premium service.
The Tidal launch event took place last night in New York. With such a motley crew of artists standing side by side on stage, one half of the music duo Daft Punk even dubbed the group "The Avengers of Music". Artists who are part of the Tidal pack and own a piece of the pie include Kanye West, Calvin Harris, Deadmau5, Rihanna, Madonna, Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Usher, J. Cole and of course, Daft Punk.
Taking to the stage to pitch the awesomeness of Tidal to both the press and the public, Alicia Keys brought out the big guns and quoted Jimi Hendrick AND Nietzsche in her speech:
- "Jimi Hendrix one said that music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music. An overstatement? Maybe, but maybe not. After all, there is truth in the age old adage that music makes the world go round."
- "We believe Frederick Nietzsche couldn't have been more right when he said 'without music, life would be a mistake'."
