If you’re under 5’4" (162cm), you’ll probably be considered petite.
It can be difficult to find outfits that fit your proportions, particularly if your chosen store doesn’t offer a petite line of clothing.
Learn how to find clothes that lift you up rather than drag you down with our outfit tips below:
1. Create length in the legs.
Straight-leg trousers and jeans will make your legs appear longer, while high-waisted trousers and skirts can add length to your legs and torso.
High-waisted bottoms will split your body into the following halves: two-thirds of your lower body and one third of your upper body. This is said to be the most flattering proportions for petite figures.
Another way to create length in the legs is going for a micro-hemline such as short shorts and mini-skirts. However, if you’d prefer a midi-skirt, opt for A-line styles that fall just below or on top of the knee.
Whichever length you choose, use skinny (rather than wide) belts that match the colour of your trousers or skirt as this will help elongate your body.
2. Co-ordinate with colour schemes.
Stick with monochrome outfits or those without too many variations of colours (such as busy prints which can swamp your frame). Colour block outfits with four colours or less is best.
Choose simple, rather than elaborate accessories to ensure the flow of your outfit is uninterrupted. Also keep in mind that oversized bags and clutches can swamp you.
3. Choose fitted outfits to avoid swamping your frame.
Fitted blazers are a must-have for petite figures. Makes sure it fits well on your shoulders and feel free to experiment with cropped and longer styles.
Fitted tops and dresses are best, avoiding those with ruffles or lots of floaty fabric. Tuck in your shirts and blouses to give you a defined waist, and don’t be afraid of maxi dresses - simply pick one that has a slim-fitting bodice that nips in at your waist.
4. Elongate with v-necks and verticals
Along with v-neck and scoop neck tops, elongate your body with vertical lines that let the eye travel along the length of your body. This could include vertical stripes, button-down shirt dresses, column dresses and pencil skirts.
A long scarf also gives illusion of length, but make sure to wear it vertically rather than around your neck.
5. Wear heels
The obvious solution to being short, choose platform heels for comfort, boots that stop just below the knee and nude heels which are a must-have as they elongate your legs - just make sure they don’t have a strap at the ankle which can break up your legs.
