If you’re widest at the hips, you probably have a pear shaped body.
It’s one of the most common figure proportions for women, characterised by smaller breasts, a long waist and heavier legs.
Learn how to embrace and flatter your figure with these outfit tips:
1. Create balance by accentuating your top half.
Options include scarves, statement collar necklaces, pussybow blouses, embellished tops, wide sleeves, puffed sleeves, and low-back styles to show off your back. You can also choose tops in bright colours to draw attention to your torso.
2. Choose wide necklines.
When it comes to necklines, choose styles that broaden the shoulders and emphasise the bust. Wide necklines such as boat-necks, scoop necks, slashed necks and high necklines are all great choices. Choose sweetheart necklines if you’d like to enhance your bust and strapless tops and dresses to make your shoulders look wider.
3. Slim your hips with dark colours.
Choose dark colours below the waist to slim down your hips as much as possible, including dark wash denim and black straight-leg jeans. Avoid cigarette-style trousers as they are the least flattering for pear shapes, as well as embellishments at the hip or rear.
4. Choose midi skirts.
When it comes to skirts, try to keep the attention between your waist and knees - or between your waist and ankles. Anything shorter (such as mini-skirt) or longer (ending on the calf) can be unflattering. Avoid tight-fitting skirts and look for those with ruffles or beading along the bottom to draw attention away from bulky hips.
5. A-line and Tulip dresses.
Go for dresses that draw the eyes towards your torso, create a tight waistline and covers up your midsection. A-line and tulip or mermaid dresses are best for this, along with dresses that have bands around the waist.
