Is sexism still rife? Asked in settings both formal and informal, the answer is: "HELL YES!" In almost every facet of society there are instances of sexism both hostile and benevolent but in today’s special edition of Shopcade’s #HotTopic, I put the age-old issue of slut-shaming under the microscope.
Let’s talk about Zara Holland who had her title of Miss Great Britain stripped after she got laid on national TV when appearing on ITV’s Love Island.
Speaking to MailOnline, the actress and model said “Sex is nothing to be ashamed of,” she continued, “We’re all women but I just don’t regret my actions, I just regret doing it on TV.”
However, Zara has insisted she doesn’t see critics and viewers of slut-shaming her in the media aftermath that followed. “I don’t feel like it’s [slut-shaming]. I think everybody makes a mistake and if you learn from it every one deserves a second chance in life. I made a mistake.”
On the other hand, Zara has admitted she doesn’t feel her partner Alex Bowen would have received the same treatment. “…If Alex was the equivalent and a Mr GB do I think his title would be taken off him? Probably not, no.” she said.
“There hasn’t been anything said about Alex. I did say it takes two to tango and like I said I’m sorry. I thank the public for their support.”
The Miss Great Britain organisation released a statement shortly after Zara and Alex’s hookup. They later Tweeted: “To be clear we have no problem at all with sex-it is perfectly natural. We [sic] simply can’t condone what happened on national tv.”
Okay fine - if Zara doesn’t feel like she’s been slut-shamed, more power to her. But the fact she felt she needed to apologise to the masses is kinda lame, no? Sure, not everyone wants to see two writhing bodies going at it as they digest dinner but A) It’s after 9pm, B) Don’t pretend this is anything you haven’t seen before and C) You’re watching LOVE ISLAND for goodness’ sake!
Now, onto Taylor Swift and her [supposed] new beau, Tom Hiddleston. Calvin Harris’ new song ‘Ole’ may be about Taylor or it may be about Rita Ora (his other high profile ex). But one thing Calvin hasn’t been criticised for is that he penned a song about an old flame.
Tay Tay, on the other hand, is once again having the songs she wrote about exes numbered in listicles and added into clickbait-y blog posts which are once again doing the rounds online.
Does anyone care that Jared Leto has dated half of Hollywood and beyond? There are listicles of Mr. Leto’s exes splashed across the web too, but most of them call all of his partners “sluts.” If “Slut” was even an appropriate word to describe ANYONE, how is it that Jared escaped its demeaning clutches?
One more thing before I go: A new study published in Archives of Sexual Behaviour shows that women who think of their partners as being selfish or sexist are less likely to orgasm during sex - by quite a significant degree.
Guys and girls should keep this in mind for the benefit of the human race’s sex life as a whole.
