On a sunny Thursday morning, we head down to the Murdock London store in Covent Garden to meet our man crush and scruffy ginger beard icon Gwilym Pugh.
We skip past the cobblestones of espresso bars where baristas are already busy honing their craft to the local media people and tourists alike to meet Gwilym, already awaiting, already looking effortlessly sartorial in his gingham suit jacket.
We speak to Gwilym as he receives the Full Beard Trim and Hotel by Murdock London's Master Barber Alex Glover...
"I started growing my beard right about when I joined a folk band 3 years ago. I tend to get it professionally trimmed every few months, and in between, I'd take an electronic razor and trim under the neck and keep my moustache in check. It's not a good look to have stuff going into my mouth".
After a rough trim, Alex starts detailing Gwilym's beard with a surgical precision found in semiconductor factory assembly robots, then covers Gwilym's face with a steaming hot towel to relax his facial muscles and beard.
It looks so comforting that I half expect him to fall asleep, after which, Alex moisturises, conditions, and shapes Gwilym's beard and moustache. He finishes off the ginger manbear with a subtle spray of the Black Tea colongne, patting him on the back, ready to send him out on his day under the briefly glorious London sunlight.
