It's got a list of celeb fans including Olivia Palermo, Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham, but could the classic Hermes Birkin be heading for the chopping block?
According to reports this morning, Jane Birkin, whom the iconic bag is named after, has asked the brand to remove her name, after a video from PETA was released showing the practices used in crocodile farms to supply luxury retailers.
The British actress said in a statement: "I have asked Hermes to rename the Birkin Croco until they adopt better practices that meet international standards for the production of this bag,"
The luxury brand responded: "Hermes respects and shares her (Jane Birkin's) emotions and was also shocked by the images recently broadcast."
"Her comments do not in any way influence the friendship and confidence that we have shared for so many years." Interesting.
The Birkin is arguably the most sought after bag in the world, with prices starting at £14,000 and a wait list as long as your arm, so we doubt this blip will get them down for long- after all the bag is a CLASSIC.
Even TV shows aren't immune to its power; remember when Samantha used her celeb collections to score a Birkin in SATC? Brilliantly shot down by the sales rep and then ripped off my Lucy Liu, even PR gurus can't have it all!
