The Boat That Rocked
Richard Curtis ('Love, Actually') delves into the world of 60's pirate radio in this coming-of-age comedy. Amidst a cast of crazies played by the likes of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Bill Nighy, disillusioned teen Carl is about to experience the rebellious spirit of rock 'n' roll, Radio Rock-style! On air. Off shore. Out of control. Written and directed by Richard Curtis (Love, Actually) The Boat That Rocked is an ensemble comedy set in the Britain of the '60s about a band of DJs playing the music that defined a generation, standing up to a government that, incomprehensibly, prefers jazz. Recently expelled from school, Carl (Tom Sturridge) is sent by his mother to find some direction in life by visiting his godfather, Quentin (Bill Nighy, Underworld). However, Quentin is the boss of Radio Rock, a pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea, populated by an eclectic crew of rock 'n' roll DJs. They are led by The Count (Oscar Award-winning Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote) - big, brash, American, god of the airwaves, and totally in love with the music. He's faithfully backed up by his co-broadcasters Dave (Nick Frost, Hot Fuzz) - ironic, intelligent and cruelly funny; Simon (Chris O'Dowd, TV's The IT Crowd) - super-nice and searching for true love; Midnight Mark (Tom Wisdom) - enigmatic, handsome and man of few words; Wee Small Hours Bob - the late night DJ, whose hobbies are folk music and drugs; Thick Kevin (Tom Brooke) - possessor of the smallest intelligence known to mankind; On-The-Hour John (Will Adamsdale) - the newsreader; and Angus 'The Nut' Nutsford (Rhys Darby, of TV's The Flight Of The Conchords) - possibly the most annoying man in Britain. American Gangster Bluray
£14.00
American Gangster Bluray
American Gangster is based on a true story and set in 1968 Harlem where Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) is a driver for Bumpy Johnson one of the top figures in the citys criminal world. When Bumpy dies Lucas swoops in taking over his predecessors empire and expanding it over the next few years with his sale of a particularly potent brand of heroin. Meanwhile New Jersey cop Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) begins to investigate the New York drug world and discovers that theres a new power in town. Thanks to screenwriter Steve Zaillian as well as Washington and Crowe AMERICAN GANGSTER creates a convincing portrait of two men who are neither entirely good nor entirely bad. Washington plays Lucas as a man who buys his mother a palatial home but doesnt hesitate to beat his brothers head against a window. Crowes Roberts may turn in a milliondollar find but he cheats on his wife. Sadly they only meet onscreen toward the end of the film but the minimal interaction between the two Oscar winners is fascinating. Even though the focus is on Lucas and Roberts AMERICAN GANGSTER is filled with a wealth of strong characters played by talented actors including Chiwetel Ejiofor Josh Brolin Ted Levine John Hawkes Ruben SantiagoHudson Carla Gugino Ruby Dee Joe Morton and rappers T.I. and RZA. Its an epic film with a run time of over two and a half hours but its time well spent. Fans of classic crime films such as THE GODFATHER SERPICO and CARLITOS WAY will certainly be pleased by this addition to the genre.

300 DVD
Cert 15. Based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley 300 takes over the screen like an invading horde. With all the gushing blood of a horror movie and the scope of a classic epic the second film from Zack Snyder (who helmed the 2004 remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD) is an impressive visual spectacle. Gerard Butler (THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) plays Leonidas the king of ancient Sparta. The city is famous for its warrior philosophy and Leonidas wont kneel to the demands of Persias King Xerxes (LOSTs Rodrigo Santoro). Instead Leonidas leads his 300strong army against Xerxess army of millions. Meanwhile his wife (Lena Headley THE BROTHERS GRIMM) campaigns in Sparta for the city to send reinforcements as she butts heads with the treacherous Theron (Dominic West THE WIRE). With its gore and scale 300 marks director Snyder as a possible successor to Peter Jacksons throne. Jackson also got his start in horror with BAD TASTE and DEAD ALIVE and the two men share a penchant for ambitious battle scenes. The huge fights in 300 rival Jacksons efforts in the LORD OF THE RINGS films. David Wenham who starred in two of the Tolkienbased films plays Dilios one of the Spartan soldiers. Though the cast doesnt boast any Alist stars the actors ably fill their largerthanlife roles. In a film filled with men Headley stands out as Queen Gorgo. She matches her warrior husband in strength while showing love toward Leonidas and their son. Though there are scenes that demonstrate the humanity of the characters 300 is undeniably about bravery and blood and it succeeds because of the stylish depictions of both.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory DVD, Chocolate
Who better to bring Roald Dahls adored childrens story to life than the mastermind behind inventive films like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice. From Tim Burtons opening shot against Danny Elfmans eerie score this Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is recognisably darker than the Mel Stuartdirected 1971 version starring Gene Wilder. Though the mysterious chocolate factory has been closed for 15 year it continues to produce and ship candy all over the world. When a contest promises a tour of the plant to the lucky finders of five golden tickets hidden inside wrappers no one is more excited than Charlie Bucket an impoverished boy whose family lives mere steps from the factory. Though he can barely afford even one candy bar fate intervenes and Charlie finds the last golden ticket. Joined at the gates by a group of despicable brats named Veruca Salt Violet Beauregarde Augustus Gloop and Mike Teavee Charlie and his Grandfather venture inside proprietor Willy Wonkas delightful factory for a wild adventure. Each room is a feast for the eyes and more importantly the taste buds a sugarcoated dreamland where everything is edible. One by one however the children meet unfortunate fates until only Charlie remains in the company of Wonka and his curiously small workers the Oompa Loompas. Sporting a severe bob and talking in a highpitched voice Depp makes his Wonka even weirder than Wilders. While Burton adds some amusing contemporary touches (like the musical Oompa Loompa routines) and an elaborate back story he also preserves the charm of the original book. Overall Burtons visual innovation succeeds in capturing the vividness of a childs imagination but whether this version trumps the beloved 71 film is for viewers to decide. Contains 1 disc. Cert PG.

Million Dollar Baby DVD

Million Dollar Baby DVD
Released a little over a year after the grand success of his Oscarwinning feature Mystic River Clint Eastwood returns to the directors chair for Million Dollar Baby. Eastwood also stars in the role of Frankie Dunn a downonhisluck former boxing manager who spends the twilight years of his life running a small dilapidated gym in downtown Los Angeles. Frankies previous career was blighted by an injury to one of his prize fighters Scrap (Morgan Freeman) who lost the sight in his right eye during a particularly brutal bout; Scrap now wiles away the hours working as a cleaner in Frankies gym. Wary of similar occurrences being inflicted on the prestigious young talent that passes before him Frankie lets a succession of great boxers slip through his fingers. But when the brash confident young boxer Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) strides into the gym Frankies life is irretrievably altered. Initially refusing to train Maggie due to her gender and age Frankie relents when faced with her tenacity spirit and burning ambition. The combination of Maggies talent and Frankies tutelage paves the way for the adroit fighter to rise steadily through the ranks of womens boxing with the unlikely coupling forming a genuinely touching bond in the process. Clint Eastwood has crafted a boxing film fit to stand alongside classics such as Raging Bull and Rocky with Million Dollar Baby. The scenes between Eastwood and Freeman are a delight to watch with the two old hands pulling off masterfully understated performances as a couple of men teetering on the brink of failure. Likewise Swank puts in a powerful turn as Maggie further emphasizing her penchant for unusual roles and perhaps even bettering her incredible Oscarwinning showing as Teena Brandon in Boys Dont Cry. Gran Torino BluRay
£14.00
Gran Torino BluRay
Cert 15.For his fourth directorial feature in the span of two years Clint Eastwood tells the story of a grizzled Korean War vets reluctant friendship with a Hmong teenage boy and his immigrant family. Set in contemporary Detroit GRAN TORINO tackles the shifting cultural and economic landscape of not only the Motor City but America as well. Eastwood stars as Walt Kowalski an unabashed bigot who never heard a racial insult he didnt love. Bitter haunted and full of pride Walt refuses to abandon the neighbourhood hes lived in for decades despite its changing demographics as he clings desperately to a mindset long since out of step with the times. When his Hmong neighbour Thao tries to steal his prized muscle car as part of a gang initiation Walt is forced to grapple with the world around him. GRAN TORINOs approach to the complicated issue of race relations is equal parts Archie Bunker and CRASH. That is to say there is nothing subtle about Walts bigotry yet his misanthropy knows no bounds and Eastwood does a remarkable job of finding the humour in Walts equal opportunity racism. More than simply a racial morality tale however GRAN TORINO is about the unlikely bonds that people form to navigate the subtle complexities of everyday life. Like MILLION DOLLAR BABY GRAN TORINO explores the challenging yet rich new world that can open up when individuals let down their guard even if for just a moment. Estranged from his family and his church and without any sense of personal peace Walt offers all that he has to Thao and his family namely wisdom and protection. When tragedy strikes the family Eastwood allows a little classic Harry Callahan to poke through but the surprising finale posits a hero that Dirty Harry would never have the guts to be. Its a potent symbolic gesture to Eastwoods own growth as a storyteller. Contains 1 discs. Cert 15.

The Woody Allen Collection: Collector's Edition Tin (6 Discs)
£30.99
The Woody Allen Collection: Collector's Edition Tin (6 Discs)
Annie Hall (1977): Starring Allen as New York comedian Alvy Singer and Diane Keaton (in a Best Actress Oscar-winning role) as Annie, the film weaves flashbacks, flash forwards, monologues, a parade of classic Allen one-liners, and even animation into an alternately uproarious and wistful comedy about a witty and wacky on-again, off-again romance.Manhattan (1979): 42-year-old Manhattan native Isaac Davis (Allen) has a job he hates, a seventeen-year-old girlfriend (Mariel Hemingway) he doesn't love, and a lesbian ex-wife Jill (Meryl Streep) who's writing a tell-all book about their marriage... and whom he'd like to strangle. But when he meets his best friend's sexy, intellectual mistress, Mary (Diane Keaton), Isaac falls head over heels in lust! Leaving Tracy, bedding Mary and quitting his job are just the beginning of Isaac's quest for romance and fulfillment in a city where sex is as intimate as a handshake - and the gate to true love... is a revolving door.Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex (But Were Afraid To Ask) (1972): Woody Allen pushes the frontiers of comedy by consolidating his madcap sensibility and wickedly funny irreverence with his developing penchant for visually arresting humor. Giving complete indulgence to the zany eccentricity of his medium, Allen revels himself as a filmmaker of wit, sophistication, and comic insight, rising to the occasion with several hysterical vignettes that probe sexuality's stickiest issues! Aphrodisiacs prove effective for a court jester (Allen) who finds the key to the Queen's (Lynn Redgrave) heart but learns that the key to her chastity belt might be more useful...Sleeper (1973): When cryogenically preserved Miles Monroe (Allen) is awakened 200 years after a hospital mishap, he discovers the future's not so bright: all women are frigid, all men are impotent, and the world is ruled by an evil dictator: a disembodied nose! Pursued by the secret police and recruited by anti-government rebels with a plan to kidnap the dictator's snout before it can be cloned, Miles falls for the beautiful - but untalented - poet Luna (Diane Keaton). But when Miles is captured and reprogrammed by the government to believe he's Miss America, it's up to Luna to save Miles, lead the rebels and cut off the nose just to spite its face.Love And Death (1975): Woody Allen reinvents himself again with the epic historical satire, Love and Death. A wonderfully funny and eclectic distillation of the Russian literary soul, the film represents a bridge between Allen's early slapstick farces and his darker autobiographical comedies. One of his most visual, philosophical and elaborately conceived films, 'Love And Death' demonstrates again that Allen is an authentic comic genius. Bananas (1971): When bumbling product-tester Fielding Mellish (Allen) is jilted by his girlfriend, Nancy (Louise Lasser), he heads to the tiny republic of San Marcos for a vacation, only to become kidnapped by rebels!

Sin City: Re-Cut And Extended - Collector's Edition Steelbook (2 Discs)
£13.85
Sin City: Re-Cut And Extended - Collector's Edition Steelbook (2 Discs)
Adapted from Frank Miller's graphic novels, SIN CITY is Robert Rodriguez's striking film noir infused with fantasy, taking place in a world where it is eternally night time and everything is drenched in rain and violence. Using a unique combination of silvery black and white digital photography with occasional flashes of bright colour for dazzling punctuation, Rodriguez employs green screen techniques and paints a backdrop around each scene, using Miller's co-direction as his cue to match the original setting as closely as possible. Three stories weave together, occasionally overlapping. With lines delivered flatly in the hard-boiled style of Raymond Chandler, these tales are about crime, love, loss, and being preternaturally tough. In the most caustically dramatic segment, Mickey Rourke plays the fearlessly love struck Marv, a trench coat-clad beast who falls in love with prostitute Goldie (Jaime King) only to find her murdered by a demonic cannibal (Elijah Wood). In another segment, Bruce Willis plays Hartigan, a rogue cop with a 'bum ticker' whose goal in life is to save Nancy (Jessica Alba), an innocent stripper, from a murderous rapist (Nick Stahl). The third segment stars Clive Owen as a detective caught between murdered cop Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro) and a slew of lethally dangerous vixens lead by Gail (Rosario Dawson). With blood spurting white, yellow, and yes even red; a roster of hot actors that goes on and on; and sound editing that makes you feel like you're the one being punched in the face, SIN CITY is a gift for fans of Miller's art, loaded with style and grit.
