Eight Films, four directors, hundreds of actors, over 10 years of filming one unique series. Now Harry Potter: Page to Screen brings together every aspect of the series’ fascinating history in one comprehensive companion volume. When a seemingly unremarkable children’s book landed in the offices of David Heyman’s offices it was relegated to a ‘low-priority’ bookshelf. Now Harry Potter fans can read about every aspect of the films’ development from casting calls to the creation of the wizarding world. With hundreds of never-before-seen photographs, in-depth chapters on magical creatures, artefacts and locations as well as a film-by-film breakdown of the expansion of the Harry Potter universe, this lavishly illustrated volume takes you behind the scenes of one of the most popular film series in history. Drawing Manga Animals, Chibis, and Other Adorable Creatures
This book focuses on both the cartoon-like critters and funny mascots that populate the shoujo (girls') style of manga and the more gritty and Gothic animals that inhabit the shounen (boys') style of manga. The book is organised in three sections: Part 1 investigates just what manga style is and includes chapters on the basic structure and anatomy of manga-style heads, faces and bodies; cute monsters and mascot creatures common to manga and anime; and mastering more advanced manga techniques. Part 2 looks at Japanese manga creatures, both real and mythological. Each animal profiled will include a more realistic manga style drawing of the animal as well as a more cartoon-like version of the animal. Part 3 is comprised of step-by-step demonstrations that take an initial drawing from start to finish.

Hiroshige
£27.99
Hiroshige
This title features Hiroshige's Edo: Masterful ukiyo-e woodblock prints of Tokyo in the mid-19th century. Literally meaning 'pictures of the floating world', ukiyo-e refers to the famous Japanese woodblock print genre that originated in the 17th century and is practically synonymous with the Western world's visual characterization of Japan. Because they could be mass produced, ukiyo-e works were often used as designs for fans, New Year's greeting cards, single prints, and book illustrations, and traditionally they depicted city life, entertainment, beautiful women, kabuki actors, and landscapes. The influence of ukiyo-e in Europe and the USA, often referred to as Japonisme, can be seen in everything from impressionist painting to today's manga and anime illustration. This reprint is made from one of the finest complete original sets of woodblock prints belonging to the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo. Hiroshige (1797-1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. Though he captured a variety of subjects, his greatest talent was in creating landscapes of his native Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and his final masterpiece was a series known as "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856-1858)". This resplendent complete reprint pairs each of the 120 large-scale illustrations with a description, allowing readers to plunge themselves into Hiroshige's beautifully vibrant landscapes.

Collected Ghost Stories (Hardback)
£14.99 £11.29
Collected Ghost Stories (Hardback)
Considered by many to be the most terrifying writer in English, M. R. James is an unlikely producer of ghost-stories. An eminent scholar who spent his entire adult life in the academic surroundings of Eton and Cambridge, his classic supernatural tales have lost none of their power to unsettle and disturb. They draw on the terrors of the everyday, in which documents and objects unleash terrible forces, often in closed rooms and night-time settings where imagination runs riot. Lonely country houses, remote inns, ancient churches or the manuscript collections of great libraries provide settings for unbearable menace, from creatures seeking retribution and harm. Stories that were first read aloud in James's study late on Christmas Eve have the power to haunt us still. This book presents all of James's published ghost stories, including the unforgettable 'Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad' and 'Casting the Runes', and an appendix of James's writings on the ghost story. Darryl Jones's introduction and notes provide a fascinating insight into James's background and his mastery of the genre he made his own.

The Elizabethans
£25.00
The Elizabethans
With all the panoramic sweep of his bestselling study "The Victorians", A.N. Wilson relates the exhilarating story of the Elizabethan Age. It was a time of exceptional creativity, wealth creation and political expansion. It was also a period of English history more remarkable than any other for the technicolour personalities of its leading participants. Apart from the complex character of the Virgin Queen herself, we follow the story of Francis Drake and political intriguers like William Cecil and Francis Walsingham, so important to a monarch who often made a key strategy out of her indecisiveness. Favourites like Leicester and Essex skated very close to the edge as far as Elizabeth's affections were concerned, and Essex made a big mistake when he led a rebellion against the crown. There was a Renaissance during this period in the world of words, which included the all-round hero and literary genius, Sir Philip Sidney, playwright-spy Christopher Marlowe and that 'myriad-minded man', William Shakespeare. Life in Elizabethan England could be very harsh. Plague swept the land. And the poor received little assistance from the State. Thumbscrews and the rack could be the grim prelude to the executioner's block. But crucially, this was the age when modern Britain was born, and established independence from mainland Europe. After Sir Walter Raleigh established the colony of Virginia, English was destined to become the language of the great globe itself, and the the foundations were laid not only of later British imperial power but also of American domination of the world. With "The Elizabethans", Wilson reveals himself again as the master of the definitive, single-volume study.
